We bring together active young people in Tartu, who want to speak on important topics. We welcome all experience levels! (In english below, по-русски ниже)

Tartu Ülikooli Väitlusklubis saad arendada oma avaliku kõnelemise, kriitilise mõtlemise ning argumenteerimise oskusi: need aga tulevad kasuks igal elualal. Muidugi on ka klubi seltskond võrratu! Klubiga liitumine ei too endaga kaasa ühtki kohu

stust, isegi kohalkäimise osas mitte. Mõistame, et aeg on piiratud ressurss ja saame aru, kui jõuad klubisse ka mõned üksikud korrad semestri jooksul. Väitleme nii eesti, vene kui ka inglise keeles.

Join us if you are interested in acquiring the skills of public speaking, critical thinking and argumentation: these will come in handy in every field of life. Of course, it must be added that the company itself is marvellous as well! Joining the Debate Club will bring with itself no obligations. For example, you can turn up whenever you want to, even if it should happen only once a month. We debate both in Estonian, Russian and English.

Присоединяйся к нам, если ты заинтересован в развитии критического мышления, аргументации и публичном выступлении. Все эти навыки полезны и в обычной жизни. Конечно, стоит сказать, что дебатное сообщество также прекрасно.

Вступление в клуб дебатов не несёт за собой никаких обязательств. Ты можешь приходить тогда, когда тебе удобно, даже если это происходит раз в месяц.

Мы дебатируем не только на русском, а на эстонском и на английском языках также.

Oskar Samuel Rebane and Karl Toom will be representing Tartu at EUDC 2026.

We asked them what debating means to them and why they decided to attend this year’s championship.

Oskar:
“When it comes to personal achievements, I’ve always preferred unexplored challenges over retracing familiar ground. EUDC feels like the natural next step in my debating journey: after achieving what I aimed for nationally, it is time to test myself on an international stage.

And, to be honest, I also couldn’t say no when Karl first brought up the idea.”

Karl:
“Debating gives me the opportunity to challenge myself intellectually and engage with questions that rarely arise in everyday life. It also connects me with friends who are very important to me, and the moments we have shared through debating have made it something of lasting value.

For me, debating is more than a hobby or competition, it is something that will stay with me for a long time.”

With only 7 days of early bird registration left, Triiinu Vaher and Breca Borga have already registered to Tartu Pre-EUDC. They are also going to EUDC. To represent Tartu. And other reasons.

Triinu (the bigger creature in the picture) did not want to go to EUDC last year but is going this year.
It remains unclear what changed during the year, but it seems to be a positive change, hopefully leading to a great experience and legendary debates.
This is a third sentence as Lotta the organizer (coincidentally also Lotta, the older sister of Triinu) asked for 3-5 sentences. My role is fulfilled, exceeded even. Look, another cat!

Breca has debate students and he strongly hopes that by becoming even a slightly better debater his students will one day benefit and surpass even greater heights because of it.
Breca also likes these lines of poetry:
“… How can man die better Than facing fearful odds, For the ashes of his fathers, And the temples of his Gods."
And this supposedly has something to do with EUDC and the spirit of all the great Estonian debaters that have come before.

🇪🇪 Möödunud nädalavahetusel osalesid meie väitlejad edukalt Poolas toimunud Poznań Open 2026 turniiril, kus Karl Toom ja Breca Borga tiimina Tartu A ning Linda Triinu Altnurme tiimis Tri dopaty jõudsid poolfinaali. Lisaks meeskondlikule edule oli Karl Toom ka 10. parim ESL kõneleja. Palju õnne!

🇬🇧 Our teams participated in the Poznań Open 2026 with team Tartu A made up of Breca Borga and Karl Toom (also representing Estonia at EUDC respectively as Tartu B and Tartu C) and Linda Triinu Altnurme (at EUDC as Tartu E) in team Tri dopaty making it to the semifinals. Karl Toom was the best speaker of our delegation being the 10th best ESL speaker. We would also like to congratulate Lucy Murphy, the CA of Tartu Pre-EUDC 2026 on winning the tournament! 🥳

🏆 Möödunud nädalavahetusel toimusid meie klubi korraldatud eesti- ja venekeelne BP algajate turniir 2025 ja ingliskeelne BP proam 2025. Mõlema võistluse turniiridirektor oli meie juhatuse liige Tommi Valgma. Võistluse peakorraldaja oli Lotta Vaher, teda toetasid ja abistasid Triinu Vaher, Emma Sofia Meri. Eestikeelsel turniiril osales 48 ja ingliskeelsel 70 võistlejat.

🏆 Eestikeelse turniiri peakohtunik oli Tartu Ülikooli Väitlusklubi liige ja valitsev Eesti meister Karl Toom. TÜVKi väitlejatest jõudsid kuldfinaali Alex Henri Paugus ja Breca Borga ning hõbefinaali Lauri Leas, Arp Harald Tamm ja Eliisabet Jürimäe. Finaali kohtunike hulka kuulusid TÜVKist Maare Karmen Oras, Karl Toom, Karl Andreas Kalamees ja Oskar Samuel Rebane. Hõbefinaali võitsid Lauri Leas ja Karola Ool. 2., 3., ja 5. parima kõneleja tiitli saavutasid vastavalt Richard Käsper, Arp Harald Tamm ja Siim Matson. Teiseks parim algaja kõneleja oli Alex Henri Paugus ja viiendaks parim Salme Saag. Palju õnne kõigile!

🏆 The CA for BP proam 2025 was our own Richard Käsper. University of Tartu Debate Club members could be seen and heard in both the gold and silver finals. The gold final had Emma Sofia Meri while the silver final saw Triinu Vaher, Merit Roseniit, Tormi Org and Kätriin Kõiv. The finals were judged by two panels of our excellent TÜVK judges: Karmen Laud, Breca Borga, Richard Käsper, Tommi Valgma, Alex Henri Paugus and Eliisabet Jürimäe. The silver final was won by Triinu and Merit. Merit was also awarded the title of third best novice speaker. Congratulations!

Sel nädalavahetusel toimus Riias edasijõudnute ja algajate võistlus SSE Riga Pro-am, mille peakohtunikeks olid meie oma Kristjan Suuder ja Tanel Mütt. Tartu Ülikooli Väitlusklubist osales turniiril 2 algajat, 4 edasijõudnut ja 4 kohtunikku. Turniiri parimaks kõnelejaks kuulutati Karl Andreas Kalamees ja viiendaks parimaks Arp Harald Tamm. Palju õnne!

Samal ajal toimus Tallinnas Erasmus+ Eesti ja Hollandi väitlusklubide projekti lõppkohtumine, kus osales Tartu Ülikooli Väitlusklubi juhatuse liige Triinu Vaher. Projekti käigus oleme vahetanud omavahel kogemusi ja praktikaid ja töötanud välja jätkusuutliku värbamis- ja võistluste korraldamise strateegia.

This weekend the University of Tartu Debate Club took part in SSE Riga Pro-am, where the CAs where Tanel Mütt and Kristjan Suuder. Our club was represented by 2 novice debaters, 4 experienced debaters and 4 judges. The best speaker of the tournament was Karl Andreas Kalamees and the fifth best Arp Harald Tamm. Congratulations!

Meanwhile in Tallinn, our board member Triinu Vaher took part in the final meeting of an Erasmus+ project uniting Dutch and Estonian debate clubs. The project has been helpful in creating sustainable recruitment and competion organizing practices as well as sharing knowledge and experience across the two countries' debate circuits.
