🍊 Casco Antiguo (Old Town): Marbella in a Minute
Welcome back to Marbella in a Minute! After the flash and flair of the Golden Mile, we’re stepping back in time to the soul of the city: The Casco Antiguo, or Old Town.
🕰️ History in a Flash
Marbella’s Old Town is built within the remnants of an old Moorish fortress. Its layout, a maze of narrow, winding streets, is classic Moorish design, intended to confuse invaders and provide shade. The heart of the area, Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square), was created by the Catholic Monarchs shortly after the Christian reconquest in 1485, marking the shift from a fortress to a town center.
✨ Key Features
The moment you enter, you’re greeted by bright white walls and vibrant bursts of geraniums and bougainvillea. The jewel is the Plaza de los Naranjos, flanked by the 16th-century Town Hall and the Chapel of Santiago. It’s an enchanting square where locals and visitors gather under the shade of the orange trees, enjoying tapas and history. Look out for the beautiful, ancient walls of the Iglesia de la Encarnación!
🦒 Curiosity Corner
Before the orange trees, the Plaza was simply known as the "Plaza Mayor" or Main Square. The orange trees—which now define the square’s famous scent—weren't planted until the 17th century! Also, look closely at some of the walls; you can still spot parts of the original Arab castle walls incorporated into the modern structures.
From Moorish roots to orange blossoms, the Old Town is where history truly lives! Join us next time for more of Marbella in a Minute!
