Puerto Banús: Marbella in a Minute
Welcome back to Marbella in a Minute!
Today, we drop the anchor in the heart of luxury: Puerto Banús.
🕰️ History in a Flash
Banús isn't an ancient village; it’s a modern marvel, opened in 1970 by local property developer José Banús. He envisioned a stylish Mediterranean village and marina, but the true masterstroke was convincing Prince Rainier III of Monaco and Princess Grace to attend the grand opening alongside a very young King Juan Carlos I of Spain. This instantly secured its reputation as the playground for the global elite.

✨ Key Features
This isn't just a port; it's an experience. The architectural style, known as Andalusian Pueblo, contrasts beautifully with the dazzling array of superyachts. You’ll find the most exclusive designer boutiques—from Louis Vuitton to Hermès—lined up along the waterfront, making it a paradise for high-end shopping and people-watching.
(🦒 Curiosity Corner
Did you know the huge bronze rhinoceros statue you see is a genuine piece by the legendary artist Salvador Dalí? It's called "Rinoceronte Vestido con Puntillas"—or "Rhinoceros Dressed in Lace"—and it was installed in 2004, serving as a surreal, artistic centerpiece to this very real-world spectacle.
From Dalí to designer shoes, that’s Puerto Banús! Join us next time for more of Marbella in a Minute!

🍊 Casco Antiguo (Old Town): Marbella in a Minute
Welcome back to Marbella in a Minute! After the flash and flair of the Golden Mile, we’re stepping back in time to the soul of the city: The Casco Antiguo, or Old Town.
🕰️ History in a Flash
Marbella’s Old Town is built within the remnants of an old Moorish fortress. Its layout, a maze of narrow, winding streets, is classic Moorish design, intended to confuse invaders and provide shade. The heart of the area, Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square), was created by the Catholic Monarchs shortly after the Christian reconquest in 1485, marking the shift from a fortress to a town center.
✨ Key Features
The moment you enter, you’re greeted by bright white walls and vibrant bursts of geraniums and bougainvillea. The jewel is the Plaza de los Naranjos, flanked by the 16th-century Town Hall and the Chapel of Santiago. It’s an enchanting square where locals and visitors gather under the shade of the orange trees, enjoying tapas and history. Look out for the beautiful, ancient walls of the Iglesia de la Encarnación!
🦒 Curiosity Corner
Before the orange trees, the Plaza was simply known as the "Plaza Mayor" or Main Square. The orange trees—which now define the square’s famous scent—weren't planted until the 17th century! Also, look closely at some of the walls; you can still spot parts of the original Arab castle walls incorporated into the modern structures.
From Moorish roots to orange blossoms, the Old Town is where history truly lives! Join us next time for more of Marbella in a Minute!

It quickly became a magnet for the international jet set and celebrities, establishing itself as a symbol of luxury on the Costa del Sol.

Today, the name and the Roman bridge remain a symbol of the long history and modern evolution of this luxury destination.
