🔬 Bringing research closer to the public: EUTOPIA_HEALTH at European Researchers’ Night 2026

How can fruit flies help us understand genetic diseases? What can temperature and humidity sensors tell us about urban heat? And how can sport help us better understand our health?

On 25 September, EUTOPIA_HEALTH brought these questions to life at the European Researchers’ Night for the third consecutive year, engaging citizens in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and Oeiras, Portugal, through interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities and conversations with researchers.

🇷🇴 At Universitatea Babeş-Bolyai in Cluj-Napoca, visitors explored genetics, microbiology, environmental monitoring and sports science 🧬 Two EUTOPIA_HEALTH seed-funded projects also took centre stage: ThanBAC, presenting laboratory tools for studying proteins and bacteria, and HEAT_SAFE, demonstrating how environmental sensors can help researchers better understand urban heat.

Participants also took part in practical health and sports activities, testing muscle strength and joint mobility 🏃 And in a lovely continuation of last year’s event, children who had submitted health-related questions in 2025 returned to the EUTOPIA_HEALTH stand to discover the answers!

🇵🇹 In Oeiras, near Lisbon, the project joined the European Corner in the gardens of the Marquês de Pombal Palace. Visitors learned about EUTOPIA_HEALTH’s upcoming activities, including its Science Café, as well as training and mobility opportunities for researchers of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.

From laboratory discoveries to conversations with the public, the initiative highlighted the value of making research accessible, encouraging scientific curiosity and building stronger connections between researchers and their communities.

The EUTOPIA Summer School on European Identities wasn’t only about lectures. Outside the classroom, the city itself became part of the learning experience 👇

🏛️ The Parliament of Catalonia (Parlament de Catalunya)
Students visited the seat of Catalan democracy and discovered how it exercises legislative power, approves the Generalitat de Catalunya's budget and scrutinises government action. They also learned about the building’s history: built in the 18th century as the arsenal of the Ciutadella fortress, it became the seat of the Parliament in 1932. A concrete link between classroom debates and the places where decisions are made

🤩 The Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau (Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau)
Designed by Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the complex’s red-brick pavilions, mosaics, sculptures and stained glass once formed part of a functioning hospital and are now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

🥘 Cooking like a local
On one evening, students swapped lecture rooms for the kitchen in the medieval Barri Gòtic. Guided by local chefs from cookandtaste, they prepared gazpacho, paella and a traditional Catalan dessert

🎨 UPF’s Art Track
A walk through works created for the university by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists, including Roy Lichtenstein and Antoni Tàpies

More than a simple programme, the EUTOPIA Summer School was a chance to experience Europe through its culture, history and people 🙌

📣 EUTOPIA has announced key leadership changes, with two new vice-chairs set to guide the alliance’s future direction.

👉 Malin Broberg, Rector of the University of Gothenburg, has been elected as Vice-Chair of the Board of Presidents. She has a background in clinical psychology and has been a Professor of Psychology since 2013, brings extensive higher-education experience to the role. Her work at the University of Gothenburg has focused on fostering collaboration and student engagement.

👉 Aïda Mimouni Chaabane, Vice-President of CY Cergy Paris Université, will take on the role of Vice-Chair of the Alliance Management Board. She currently overseeing international relations and strategic partnerships at CY Cergy Paris University, holds a PhD in Marketing. Her experience has been instrumental in building long-lasting academic collaborations.

As new leadership steps in, our Alliance has expressed appreciation for the outgoing leaders’ contributions:

👉 Tiziana Lippiello, the former Rector of Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, has received special mention for her tenure as Chair of the Board in 2023-2024 and her role as Vice-Chair of the Board of Presidents over the past year. Notably, she was the first female rector in the university’s 150-year history and made significant strides in enhancing its international presence.

👉 Karin Vanderkerken, Vice-Rector for Internationalisation at VUB - Vrije Universiteit Brussel, is also recognised for her contributions as Vice-Chair of the Alliance Management Board in recent years. Her leadership in internationalisation and research at VUB has been instrumental in advancing EUTOPIA’s collaborative initiatives, and she was recently honoured as a member of the KVAB - Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België (Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts).

These transitions are part of EUTOPIA’s ongoing efforts to embrace a rotational leadership model that combines established expertise with fresh perspectives. The changes come at a time when the Alliance is focusing on intensifying collaboration in education, research, innovation and international outreach.

🔬 Turning research into stories people can understand

From 14–18 September, 30 young researchers from EUTOPIA partner universities came together near Berlin for the fourth EUTOPIA Impact School, hosted by TU Dresden Graduiertenakademie (TU Dresden).

Over five days, participants developed practical science communication skills, from writing press releases and facing the camera during media training to pitching their research to a non-specialist audience.

With guidance from science journalists Hannes Schlender and Dirk Hans, insights from science slammer Lisa Budzinski, the researchers explored new ways to communicate their work clearly, confidently and accessibly.

Beyond the training, the week was also an opportunity to exchange ideas, build international connections and learn from fellow researchers across the EUTOPIA Alliance.

💬 As one participant put it: “The training took me out of my comfort zone, and I was able to acquire many new skills.”

What does it take to build a Connected Community that lasts beyond a project?

For EUTOPIA, the answer starts with trust, collaboration and people willing to build connections across campuses.

At our recent Local Facilitator meeting in Barcelona, hosted by Universitat Pompeu Fabra - Barcelona, colleagues from all ten EUTOPIA universities came together to reflect on what we have built through EUTOPIA MORE (2022–2026) and, importantly, what comes next.

From EUTOPIA labels and micro-credentials to new approaches to research-based learning, open science and academic and staff mobility, the meeting was an opportunity to share what is already working and explore how these practices can grow across the Alliance.

But the conversations were not only about achievements. Facilitators also looked ahead, identifying “the most pressing partnership needs” and asking what Connected Communities need to remain active, relevant and sustainable over time.

The meeting also offered a first look at EUTOPIA EDGE, the next chapter for the Alliance.

Because lasting transformation does not happen overnight. It is built through relationships, shared experiences and the commitment to keep working together across institutions, disciplines and borders.

🔬 Six years, four cohorts, 78 fellows: EUTOPIA-SIF celebrates its impact

As the EUTOPIA-SIF Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral COFUND programme prepares to conclude in November 2026, its fellows, supervisors and colleagues came together online on 10 September for a cross-campus closing event: Choose EUTOPIA for Science: MSCA COFUND Science and Innovation Fellowship Impact and Careers.

More than 80 participants from across the Alliance and beyond reflected on the programme’s achievements, the fellows’ career paths and the research carried out across five thematic areas:
👉 Materials Engineering
👉 Sustainability
👉 Data and Intelligence
👉 Health
👉 Welfare and Inclusion

The event also looked ahead: EUTOPIA-SIF will have a successor programme, EUTOPIA-SHIFT, recently awarded MSCA COFUND funding with a perfect score of 100%!

From international mobility and interdisciplinary research to new collaborations and career opportunities, EUTOPIA-SIF has helped its fellows connect their work with the wider EUTOPIA community.
