The programme is backed by the European Union, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), inter-governmental organisations (IGOs) and other humanitarian agents that work closely with the network (see: http://www.nohanet.org/). The NOHA Master’s is the first world scale initiative undertaken to respond to the growing need for higher education qualifications specifically designed to handle complex emergency humanitarian situations. The programme was created in 1993 as the result of concerted efforts on the part of the Network on Humanitarian Assistance (NOHA) Universities, working in close collaboration with two Directorates-General of the European Commission: DG for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO) and DG for Education and Culture. ... This official Master’s degree programme has been taught since 2004. It has been chosen as a model for joint Master’s degree programmes for the EUA (European Universities Association and selected by the ANECA to take part in the pilot project on accreditation of joint programmes in 2009. In September 2004, the European Commission chose the NOHA Master's as one of the first programmes with the Erasmus Mundus status. It received this distinction again in 2009. Erasmus Mundus is a mobility and cooperation programme in the field of higher education for promotion of the European Union as a world centre of excellence. The Erasmus Mundus Master’s programmes are the pivotal feature of Erasmus Mundus. Mobility is a key aspect of Erasmus Mundus Master’s en Acción Internacional Humanitaria-International Humanitarian Action (NOHA). A six-month mobility period is compulsory for NOHA students. Participants study at different universities and benefit from rich cultural interaction and the opportunity to use different languages. Upon successful completion of the entire programme, students will be awarded a a Joint Diploma in International Humanitarian Action. All students will be given a diploma supplement.
