Today we collected from our first 12 sample sites. There was some trial and error but we got there in the end.
Step 1- water collection
Step 2- wash hands and bottles with the river water
Step 3- collect water again and fill bottles, labelling each one
Step 4- filter the water through filter paper
Step 5- use an easy lift to gather debris off the filter paper
Step 6- examine

Zooming in on the unseen! 🦠

🔬 These samples were collected from the River Trent and captured using different microscopic lenses attached to a phone camera. 📱🔍
These portable lenses make on-the-go microscopy so much easier—no need to lug around a full-sized microscope! 🚶‍♂️🔬

We tested out different options to find the best one for our upcoming field trip to Spain, where we’ll be analyzing microplastics in the River Nervión. 🌊💡

In April a group Level 6 of students from University of Staffordshire will be travelling to Bilbao, Spain, to complete a Microplastic Research Project along the River Nervion.

We are raising money in order to purchase suitable amounts of equipment for us to do this research! With there being around 20 students doing this project the university doesn’t have enough resources for us to take with us on the project.

Microplastic research is vital as it is still unknown how these plastics are affecting the ecosystem, wildlife, humans and the environment. They can be found in the air, land, water (including what we drink) and food.

We are hoping that this research can be used to help find solutions on how microplastics can be kept to a minimum and protect the environment! Ultimately we need to find out how microplastics are impacting us now and what it will be like in the future!
