On March 11, 2026, in line with the celebration of National Women’s Month, Guimaras State University (GSU), through its Gender and Development (GAD) Office, conducted a forum titled “Women Inspiring Women and Expanded Maternity Leave Law” at the Agri-Eco Convention Hall, Salvador Campus.

The activity gathered faculty members, administrative personnel, and students to discuss women’s leadership experiences and provide orientation on statutory leave benefits available to employees.

The program opened with a message from Dr. Erly M. Martir, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), who stressed the value of platforms that highlight women’s contributions across professional and civic spaces. He noted that conversations surrounding gender equity and workplace welfare remain integral to building an inclusive academic community.

GAD Director Frennie D. Zarate delivered the succeeding message and introduced the forum’s keynote speaker. In her remarks, she outlined the objectives of the gathering, emphasizing the importance of sustained dialogue on women’s empowerment and institutional policies that safeguard employee welfare.

The forum proper featured Hon. Cecile D. Gumarin, Vice Governor of the Province of Guimaras, who led the discussion titled “Women Inspiring Women.” In her presentation, she shared insights from her experience in public service, recounting challenges encountered in leadership roles and reflecting on the perseverance required of women navigating positions of responsibility.

Complementing the discussion, Mrs. Ma. Rechel A. Pillora, Head of the Human Resource Management Office, conducted an orientation on the Expanded Maternity Leave Law or Republic Act No. 11210, along with wellness leave provisions and other employee leave benefits. Her presentation outlined the scope of the legislation, eligibility requirements, and the application procedures relevant to government personnel.

The activity concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Sol M. Basañes, GAD Coordinator, who expressed appreciation to the speakers and participants. She encouraged the university community to remain engaged in gender-responsive initiatives that promote equitable participation and awareness within the institution.

Abante, Babae!

Today, we celebrate strength, courage, and the countless contributions of women who continue to shape our communities and our future. On International Women’s Day, we stand together in promoting gender equality and an inclusive society where every voice is heard and every woman is empowered.

Inspired by the spirit of the Babaylans—leaders, healers, and trailblazers of our history—may we continue to uplift one another, break barriers, and lead with wisdom, compassion, and resilience.

Let us honor the women who paved the way and support the women who are rising today. Together, we move forward toward a future where equality is not just a vision, but a reality.

Lead like the Babaylans, Filipinas!
