Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience, named in the memory of Nicolas Achucarro Lund (Bilbao, 1880-1918)

Ikerbasque – the Basque Foundation for Science and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), fostered the creation of the Basque center for neuroscience research, named in the memory of Nicolas Achucarro (Bilbao, 1880-1918), a pioneer of modern brain research. The main strategic objective of Achucarro is to contribute to the development of a socially and economically sustainable Society. To do this we strive to perform world-class research in the study of neuron-glia biology in the normal and pathological brain. This research focus will allow us to contribute to the training of future generations of neuroscientists and be an active partner in the dissemination of the human knowledge about the brain.

La falta de sueño puede influir en el desarrollo cognitivo, el rendimiento académico, la conducta y la salud. Además, el uso de pantallas y los horarios escolares pueden alterar los patrones de sueño.

Desde Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience, y en colaboración con UNICEF Comité País Vasco, hemos desarrollado un nuevo material divulgativo sobre sueño, cronotipos y uso de pantallas en niños, niñas y adolescentes, basado en evidencia científica y disponible gratuitamente en castellano y euskera.

The Achucarro International Glia School 2026 has come to an end! 🧠🔬

The three-day programme came to an end on Friday, bringing this year’s edition to a close. Over three days in Plentzia, participants took part in talks, discussions, mentoring sessions and scientific activities focused on glial cell biology.

The Achucarro International Glia School 2026 starts tomorrow! 🧠🔬

Over the next three days, researchers from Achucarro and other institutions will meet in Plentzia to discuss different aspects of glial cell biology.

The programme includes sessions on glial metabolism and neurodegeneration, neural circuit physiology, and new experimental approaches to studying glial cells.

Last Friday, we welcomed Ana Dorrego-Rivas (King’s College London, UK) to Achucarro for a seminar on neuronal polarity and axo-dendritic interactions. 🧠

In her talk, “From unconventional neurons to axo-dendritic interactions: rethinking neuronal polarity”, she presented research challenging the traditional binary view of neuronal polarity, which separates neurons into distinct axonal and dendritic domains.

Her work in olfactory bulb dopaminergic neurons shows that axon-bearing and anaxonic neurons engage in distinct forms of dendritic neurotransmitter release and self-inhibition, revealing additional layers of neuronal heterogeneity and a broader spectrum of polarity configurations.
