What does it really mean to work in international development?

In Nairobi, students from the Master in International Development at IE School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs are exploring global challenges on the ground, from the UN system to local initiatives in Kibera.

For many, the experience is as personal as it is academic, with one student describing it as “a gorgeous place, with a beautiful campus, professional staff and great people. I’m happy to be here.”

What should guide public policy when the challenges shaping the world have changed?

During his visit to IE University, Andrés Velasco, former Minister of Finance of Chile, author of The London Consensus and Dean of the School of Public Policy at LSE, joined Toni Roldán, Assistant Professor of Public Policy at IE University, for a conversation on economic growth, inequality, technological transformation and democratic resilience.

In this interview, Velasco reflects on why the answers developed decades ago may no longer be enough for today’s world, and why policymakers need new frameworks to respond to uncertainty, global crises and rising populism.

Watch the interview and explore the ideas shaping public policy in the 21st century.

What happens when learning leaves the classroom?

For Daria and the students from the Master in Technology & Global Affairs, Immersion Week meant stepping inside the places where policy, technology and global decisions come to life.

From the European Commission and European Parliament to conversations around AI, journalism and misinformation, every stop became an opportunity to ask questions, challenge ideas and gain new perspectives.

A week experienced from the inside, through the voices and moments shared by the students themselves.

From the classroom to the heart of the action.

Our Master in International Relations students just spent a week living the reality of global diplomacy in Brussels and Geneva. Imagine walking the halls of the European Parliament one day and discussing global security at NATO the next.

The highlights:
📍 Navigating the halls of the European Commission
📍 Exploring the UN's impact in Geneva
📍 Building a network that spans across borders

One week of immersion, a future of global impact. This is where your journey begins!

What happens when one of the world’s top alpinists takes you out of your comfort zone?

In the Himalayas, students from IE University’s Bachelor in International Relations were guided by Edurne Pasaban, the first woman in history to climb all 14 of the world’s highest mountains.

With her experience leading the way, the journey became more than a trek. It became a lesson in facing fear, embracing uncertainty and pushing beyond limits.

Because growth doesn’t happen where things feel easy: it happens when you decide to keep going.

4,047 meters of altitude. One unforgettable lesson in leadership.

During the Transformational Leadership Journey to Nepal, students from IE School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs trekked through the Himalayas and discovered that leadership is not about being the first to arrive, but about helping the team move forward together.

Through challenging climbs, moments of doubt and breathtaking landscapes, they learned what resilience, trust and shared purpose really mean.

What does it take to rebuild a country and make it stronger?

We welcomed María José Pinto, Vice President of Ecuador, for a conversation with our students on social reconstruction and long-term development. Her message was simple but powerful: investing in people, health, equality and social cohesion is what drives real economic resilience.

She also left students with a challenge: don’t wait until you feel ready. Opportunities come fast, and if you don’t take them, someone else will. The real responsibility is to use what you learn and bring it back to where it’s needed most.

Moments like this are what shape future public leaders, connecting classroom learning with real-world decision-making.

Thank you for being part of this conversation.
