An abandoned tractor slowly disappearing inside a growing tree may look almost surreal, but it demonstrates how persistent natural growth can be over long periods of time.

As the tree expanded, its trunk gradually grew around parts of the old machine, eventually enveloping much of the tractor. Trees don't actively “swallow” objects; instead, their trunks increase in diameter year after year, growing around obstacles that remain in their path.

The process can take decades, depending on the tree species, climate and size of the object.

Similar examples can be found around the world, where trees have grown around fences, signs, bicycles, vehicles and even buildings.

The image is a fascinating reminder that forests operate on a timescale completely different from human construction. A machine designed to work the land can eventually become physically incorporated into the landscape it once helped shape.

Nature may not move quickly—but given enough time, it can completely transform what humans leave behind.
