ARBA MINCH UNIVERSITY PROFILE

AMU’s historical foundation dates back to late 1990s. Mandated to address water-related issues, the then Arba Minch Water Technology Institute (AWTI) was established in 1986. AWTI then used to offer short and long-term trainings, conducting research and rendering consultancy services in the water sector. In 1997, it got restructured as Arba Minch Technology Institute (AMiT), and soon three BSc degree programs were added i.e. In 2001, Meteorology Department was established to provide diploma and PG degrees. Subsequently, Computer Science and Information Technology & Architecture were added. In 2002, AMiT rolled in PG programs in Hydraulics & Hydropower & Irrigation Engineering. Additional programs i.e. Hydrology & Water Resource and Meteorology were introduced in 2004-5. In 2002-3, the School of Graduate Studies came into being, that later launched MSc in Electrical Power Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Water Supply and Environmental Engineering. Till 1993, AMiT was governed by Water Resource Commission and then came under the umbrella of Ministry of Education (MoE). Following nation’s development plan to produce qualified manpower, AMiT was scaled up to the level of university as Arba Minch University in 2004. Since its establishment, AMU has achieved several milestones and with its maiden PhD program in Irrigation & Drainage Engineering in 2006 EC (2013-14), it has taken a quantum leap towards excellence. VISION: Arba Minch University aspires to be a leading University by producing intellectuals who will boost growth and development of the nation and become competitive in Africa and the world by 2025 GC

AMU and Partners Hand Over 100 Houses to Conflict-Displaced Families in Konso

Arba Minch University (AMU) School of Law, in collaboration with the Gerda Henkel Foundation and Oxford Brookes University, officially handed over 100 houses equipped with solar-powered lighting systems to conflict-displaced families in Gelabo Kebele, Konso Zone, South Ethiopia Regional State, on October 10, 2026. The project was coordinated by AMU School of Law in collaboration with the Centre for Development and Emergency Practice (CENDEP) at Oxford Brookes University, with financial support from the Germany-based Gerda Henkel Foundation.

AMU President Dr. Eng. Abdella Kemal emphasized that a house is more than a physical structure; it provides shelter, privacy, and safety while serving as the foundation for family and community life. He noted that when people are displaced by conflict, violence, or natural disasters, they lose their home which means losing more than a physical shelter undermines their security and dignity. Referring to international human rights law, he underscored everyone's right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate housing. The President also highlighted the University's broader contributions beyond teaching and research, including the provision of clean drinking water, renewable energy development, environmental protection and conservation, agricultural development, the expansion of education and technology, and free legal services to the community.

Speaking on the event, Dr. Teklu Wegayehu, AMU Vice President for Research and Cooperation, highlighted the vulnerability of refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and migrants to human rights violations, including violations of their right to adequate housing. He noted that discrimination, racism, and xenophobia can further undermine their access to sustainable and adequate living conditions. He explained that the project brought together partners from Germany, the United Kingdom, and Ethiopia represents a unique milestone in the University's history by integrating house construction with solar power installation in a single initiative. He added that the project demonstrates how partnerships between academic institutions and international organizations can deliver sustainable solutions to community challenges. Dr. Teklu expressed his gratitude to the project coordinators, donor organizations, AMU senior leadership, School of Law, implementing bodies, and all stakeholders who contributed to its successful completion.

Mr. Martin Kobler, a board member of the Gerda Henkel Foundation and former German Ambassador, expressed his appreciation for the project's progress and achievements. He noted that implementing a large-scale, high-quality initiative in remote and hard-to-reach areas was a significant accomplishment. He thanked all individuals and organizations involved and affirmed the Foundation's continued commitment to supporting research-based development projects. He also urged parents in the area to prioritize their children's education and upbringing.

Mr. Gelebo Goltomo, Konso Zone Administrator, described the housing project as an initiative that goes beyond conventional construction. He said it had helped restore the dignity of conflict-displaced people, renew their hopes, and strengthen the bond between AMU and the people of Konso.

Mr. Abraham Kinfe, Dean of the School of Law, outlined the project's implementation phases and major activities completed to date. He also highlighted the School's provision of free legal services in Konso Zone and other areas, expressing pride in the historic initiative coordinated by the School.

Dr. Yalisho Girma, Director of the Renewable Energy Technology Research Center, explained that the solar energy component comprises three clusters of solar panels installed at different locations. Each cluster generates 1,000 watts, bringing the project's total power-generation capacity to 3,000 watts. He noted that the system was designed to provide electricity to the 100 newly constructed houses.

At the end of the ceremony, certificates of recognition and appreciation were presented to partner organizations, donors, university leaders, professionals, and other stakeholders in acknowledgment of their contributions to the project's successful implementation and achievements.

The beneficiary families expressed their joy and satisfaction at receiving permanent homes equipped with solar-powered lighting, extending their gratitude to AMU and its partner organizations. AMU officials, project team members, School of Law staff, Konso Zone officials, and invited guests attended the ceremony.

የትምህርትና ስልጠና ባለሥልጣን በአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የተቋማዊ ጥራት ኦዲት ግምገማ እያካሄደ ይገኛል

የትምህርትና ስልጣና ባለሥልጣን አጠቃላይ የተቋማዊ ጥራት ኦዲት (Institutional Quality Audit) ግምገማ በአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ከጥቅምት 2 እስከ 11 ቀን 2019 ዓ.ም. እያካሄደ ይገኛል።

በግምገማው ሂደት የዩኒቨርሲቲው ራዕይ፣ ተልዕኮ፣ ተቋማዊ አስተዳደር ሥርዓት እንዲሁም ስትራቴጂካዊ ዕቅዶች አፈጻጸም ከመሪዎችና ከባለድርሻ አካላት ጋር በጥልቀት እየተገመገሙ ይገኛሉ። በተጨማሪም የኦዲት ባለሙያዎች ቡድን በፋይናንስና በጀት አስተዳደር፣ በሰብአዊ ሀብት ልማት፣ በመሠረተ ልማት እና በትምህርት ግብዓቶች አጠቃቀም ዙሪያ ውይይቶችንና የሰነድ ግምገማዎችን እያከናወኑ ይገኛል።

ሂደቱ የትምህርት ፕሮግራም ዝግጅትን፣ የማስተማርና መማር ሂደትን፣ የተማሪዎች ምዘናን፣ ምርምርን፣ የቴክኖሎጂ ሽግግርን እና የማህበረሰብ አገልግሎትን በልዩ ትኩረት የሚገመግም ሲሆን፤ በግምገማው ላይ የዩኒቨርሲቲው ከፍተኛ አመራሮች፣ ዲኖች፣ የአካዳሚክና አስተዳደር ሠራተኞች እና የተማሪዎች ተወካዮች በንቃት እየተሳተፉ ይገኛሉ።

AMU Hosts German Diplomat Martin Kobler for Experience-Sharing Session with LLB Graduating Students

Arba Minch University (AMU) hosted His Excellency Mr. Martin Kobler, a German diplomat and board member of the Gerda Henkel Foundation, for an experience-sharing session with graduating Bachelor of Laws (LLB) students on October 9, 2026, at Chamo Campus. During the session, Mr. Kobler presented his recent book, Global Tremors: Europe’s Chance for New Radiance, and shared practical insights from his diplomatic career and United Nations assignments in the Middle East and Africa.

Mr. Kobler discussed international law, Africa’s role in international law, international criminal law, war crimes, international humanitarian law, and human rights law. He emphasized the important role of young people, including law students, recent graduates, and early-career legal scholars, in advancing international criminal law, international humanitarian law, and human rights through legal research, critical writing, advocacy, and public awareness initiatives.

Eleni Tamirat, a fifth-year law student and a representative of graduate students and the AMU Human Rights Association President, said the session helped students gain insight into the practical realities of working in the field and understand the ideas presented in Mr. Kobler’s book. Another law student, Tsedinya Ayelign, noted that interacting with an experienced diplomat offered valuable practical knowledge beyond theoretical classroom learning. Mr. Godsend Konofa, a PhD student at Oxford Brooks University, moderated the session.

የሰንደቅ ዓላማ ቀን በአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ተከበረ

በአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲ 19ኛው የሰንደቅ ዓላማ ቀን የዩኒቨርሲቲው አመራር ፣ የአካዳሚክ ማኅበረሰብ እና የዩኒቨርሲቲው አስተዳደር ሠራተኞች በተገኙበት ዛሬ ጥቅምት 2/2019 ዓ/ም ተከብሯል፡፡

በዓሉ የሀገርን ሉዓላዊነት፣ አንድነት፣ ብዝኃነትና የጋራ ተስፋ የሚወክለውን ሰንደቅ ዓላማ ክብር በማሳየት፣ ለሀገራዊ ልማትና ለጋራ ኃላፊነት ያለንን ቁርጠኝነት ለማደስ ያለመ ነው።

የአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲና አጋሮቹ ታሪካዊ የሰብአዊነት አሻራ፡ በገላቦ ለተፈናቃይ ቤተሰቦች የተገነቡት 100 የመኖሪያ ቤቶች ተመረቁ

በግጭት ምክንያት የገዛ መኖሪያ ቤታቸው ፈርሶ ለወራት በሽራና በፕላስቲክ መጠለያዎች ውስጥ በከባድ እንግልት ሲኖሩ የነበሩ 100 አባወራዎች፣ ከዓመታት ጨለማ በኋላ አዲስ የብርሃንና የተስፋ ምዕራፍ ጀምረዋል። ትናንት መስከረም 30/2019 ዓ/ም በኮንሶ ዞን ገላቦ ቀበሌ በተካሄደ ደማቅ የምረቃና የርክክብ ሥነ-ሥርዓት፣ በአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲ እና በዓለም አቀፍ አጋሮቹ የተገነቡት 100 ዘመናዊ የመኖሪያ ቤቶች ከሶላር ኤሌክትሪክ መብራት ዝርጋታ ጋር ለተፈናቃይ ቤተሰቦቹ በይፋ ተላላፈዋል።

ይህ ግዙፍ የሰብአዊና የማህበረሰብ ድጋፍ ፕሮጀክት በአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲ በሕግ ትምህርት ቤት አስተባባሪነት እና በኦክስፎርድ ብሩክስ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የአደጋና ልማት ማዕከል (CENDEP) ትብብር የተከናወነ ሲሆን፤ ሙሉ የገንዘብ ድጋፉ በጀርመኑ ጌርዳ ሄንከል ፋውንዴሽን (Gerda Henkel Foundation) የተሸፈነ ነው።

የአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፕሬዝደንት ዶ/ር ኢ/ር አብደላ ከማል በሥነ-ሥርዓቱ ላይ ባደረጉት ንግግር መኖሪያ ቤት ከመሠረታዊ መጠለያነት የዘለለ ትርጉም እንዳለው አብራርተዋል። "ቤት የመኖር፣ የሰው ልጅ ክብር ማሳያ፣ የደህንነት፣ የሰላምና የነፃነት ማረፊያ እንዲሁም የቤተሰብና የትውልድ መሠረት ነው" ሲሉ ገልጸዋል።

አክለውም፣ መጠለያው በተለይም እናቶችንና ሕፃናትን ከጥቃትና ከከባድ አደጋዎች በመጠበቅ ረገድ ከፍተኛ ፋይዳ እንዳለው ጠቁመው፤ ሕፃናት በሰላም አድገው፣ በትምህርታቸው ላይ አተኩረው የሚማሩበትና የተሻለ የወደፊት ሕይወት የሚገነቡበት አዲስ ተስፋ እንደፈጠረላቸው ተናግረዋል።

ፕሬዝደንቱ አያይዘውም ዩኒቨርሲቲው ከመማር ማስተማር እና ከምርምር ዋና ዋና ተልእኮዎቹ ባሻገር በተለይም በንጹሕ መጠጥ ውሃ አቅርቦት፣ በታዳሽ ኃይል ዝርጋታ፣ በአካባቢ ጥበቃና እንክብካቤ፣ በግብርናው ዘርፍ፣ በትምህርት ጥራትና ማስፋፋት እንዲሁም ነፃ የሕግ ድጋፍ አገልግሎቶችን በማቅረብ ረገድ ከፍተኛ ተግባራትን እያከናወነ ይገኛል ብለዋል።

የዩኒቨርሲቲው የምርምርና ትብብር ምክትል ፕሬዝደንት ዶ/ር ተክሉ ወጋየሁ ፕሮጀክቱ ሦስት ሀገራትን (ጀርመን፣ እንግሊዝ እና ኢትዮጵያን) ያስተሰረረ መሆኑን ገልጸዋል። በዩኒቨርሲቲው ታሪክ ውስጥ የመጀመሪያው በሆነ መልኩ በአንድ ፕሮጀክት ውስጥ ሁለት ዋና ዋና ነገሮችን ማለትም የቤት ግንባታን እና የሶላር ኃይል ዝርጋታን በአንድ ላይ የያዘ በመሆኑ ፕሮጀክቱን እጅግ ልዩ እንደሚያደርገው አብራርተዋል። አክለውም ከዓለም አቀፍ ተቋማት ጋር የሚደረጉ አጋርነቶች እንዲህ ያሉ ዘላቂ ፍሬዎችን እያፈሩ መሆናቸውን ጠቁመው፣ የፕሮጀክቱ እውን መሆን የአካዳሚክ ተቋማት ለማህበረሰብ ችግር መፍትሔ የመስጠት አቅም ማሳያ መሆኑን ተናግረዋል።

ዶ/ር ተክሉ አያይዘውም ይህ እጅግ አስፈላጊና አበረታች ፕሮጀክት ስኬታማ ሆኖ እንዲጠናቀቅና ከግቡ እንዲደርስ አስተዋጽኦ ላደረጉ የፕሮጀክቱ አስተባባሪዎች፣ ለለጋስ ድርጅቶች፣ ለዩኒቨርሲቲው ከፍተኛ አመራሮች፣ ለሕግ ትምህርት ቤት፣ ለአስፈጻሚ አካላትና ለሁሉም ባለድርሻ አካላት ምስጋናቸውን አቅርበዋል።

የጌርዳ ሄንከል ፋውንዴሽን የቦርድ አባልና የቀድሞው የጀርመን አምባሳደር ክቡር ማርቲን ኮብለር በፕሮጀክቱ አስደናቂ ዕድገትና ውጤት የተሰማቸውን ከፍተኛ ደስታና መደነቅ ገልጸዋል። አምባሳደሩ እንዲህ ያሉ ሩቅ እና ለመድረስ አስቸጋሪ መንገዶች ባሉባቸው አካባቢዎች እንዲህ ያለ ግዙፍና ጥራት ያለው ሥራ መከናወኑ እንደሚያኮራ ተናግረዋል። በሂደቱ ውስጥ የተሳተፉ አካላትና ግለሰቦች ሁሉ በሙሉ ልብ አመስግነው፤ ፋውንዴሽኑ በቀጣይነትም እንደዚህ ያሉ በምርምር ላይ የተመሰረቱ የልማት ፕሮጀክቶችን ድጋፍ አጠናክሮ እንደሚቀጥል አረጋግጠዋል። በመጨረሻም ወላጆች ህፃናት ልጆቻቸውን በትምህርት እንዲያንጹና እንዲያስተምሩ አፅንኦት ሰጥተው መክረዋል።

የኮንሶ ዞን አስተዳዳሪ አቶ ገለቦ ጎልቶሞ እንደገለጹት ይህ የመኖሪያ ቤቶች ግንባታ ፕሮጀክት የጭቃና የእንጨት ውጤት ብቻ ሳይሆን፣ በግጭቱ ምክንያት የተሸረሸረውን የሕዝቦቻችንን ሰብአዊ ክብር ያስመለሰ፣ የተፈናቃዮችን ተስፋ ያለመመ፣ እንዲሁም በአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲና በኮንሶ ሕዝብ መካከል ያለውን አብሮነትና ፍቅር የበለጠ ያጠናከረ ታላቅ ተግባር ነው።

የሕግ ትምህርት ቤት ዲን አቶ አብርሃም ክንፈ ስለ ፕሮጀክቱ አጠቃላይ ሂደት፣ የትግበራ ደረጃዎችና እስከ አሁን ከተከናወኑት ተግባራት ጋር ተያይዞ ማብራሪያ ሰጥተዋል። ትምህርት ቤቱ በኮንሶ ዞንና በተለያዩ አካባቢዎች ነፃ የሕግ ድጋፍ አገልግሎት በመስጠት ረገድ ያከናወናቸውን አበራች ሥራዎች ያነሱ ሲሆን፤ ይህ ፕሮጀክት በትምህርት ቤቱ አስተባባሪነት የተከናወነ ትልቅና ልዩ ታሪካዊ ተግባር በመሆኑ የተሰማቸውን ኩራት ገልጸዋል።

የታዳሽ ኃይል ቴክኖሎጂ ምርምር ማዕከል ዳይሬክተር ዶ/ር ያሊሾ ግርማ ስለ ሶላር ፕሮጀክቱ በሰጡት ማብራሪያ የሶላር ፕሮጀክቱ በሦስት የተለያዩ ቦታዎች በክላስተር የተገጠሙ ሦስት የሶላር ፓነሎችን ያካተተ መሆኑን ገልጸዋል። እያንዳንዱ ፓነል 1,000 ዋት ኃይል የሚያመነጭ ሲሆን፣ በአጠቃላይ ፕሮጀክቱ 3,000 ዋት የኤሌክትሪክ ኃይል የማመንጨት አቅም አለው። ይህ የታዳሽ ኃይል አቅርቦት ለአዲሶቹ 100 የመኖሪያ ቤቶች ሙሉ በሙሉ ኤሌክትሪክ የሚያቀርብ መሆኑንም አብራርተዋል።

በምረቃ ሥነ-ሥርዓቱ ማጠቃለያ ላይ ለፕሮጀክቱ ስኬታማነት፣ ውጤታማ ትግበራና ከግብ መድረስ የላቀ አስተዋጽኦ ላበረከቱ ባለድርሻ አካላት፣ ለለጋስ ድርጅቶች፣ ለዩኒቨርሲቲው አመራሮችና ባለሙያዎች እንዲሁም አስተዋጽኦ ላደረጉ አካላት በሙሉ የከፍተኛ እውቅናና የምስጋና ሰርተፊኬት ተበርክቶላቸዋል።

ከነበሩበት የፕላስቲክና የሽራ መጠለያ አስቸጋሪ ሁኔታ ወጥተው የቋሚ ቤትና የሶላር ኤሌክትሪክ ብርሃን ባለቤት የሆኑት የተፈናቃይ ቤተሰቦች የተሰማቸውን ታላቅ ደስታና እርካታ በመግለጽ፣ ለአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲና ለአጋር ድርጅቶች ልባዊ ምስጋናቸውን አቅርበዋል።

የገላቦ የመጠለያ ፕሮጀክት ምረቃና ርክክብ ሥነ-ሥርዓት በደማቅ ሁኔታ እየተካሄደ ይገኛል!

አርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ከተለያዩ አጋሮች ጋር በመተባበር በደቡብ ኢትዮጵያ ክልል፣ በኮንሶ ዞን ገላቦ ቀበሌ በተለያዩ ምክንያቶች ለተፈናቀሉ 100 አባወራዎች የተገነቡ የ100 የመኖሪያ ቤቶች የምረቃና የርክክብ ሥነ-ሥርዓት በዛሬው ዕለት በቦታው በደማቅ ሁኔታ በመካሄድ ላይ ይገኛል።

ይህ ግዙፍ የሰብአዊና የማህበረሰብ ድጋፍ ፕሮጀክት በአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲ እና በኦክስፎርድ ብሩክስ ዩኒቨርሲቲ የአደጋና ልማት ማዕከል (CENDEP) ትብብር የተከናወነ ሲሆን፤ የገንዘብ ድጋፉ ደግሞ በጀርመኑ ጌርዳ ሄንከል ፋውንዴሽን (Gerda Henkel Foundation) የተሸፈነ ነው።

ከተገነቡት የመኖሪያ ቤቶች ጎን ለጎን 3 ሺህ ዋት (3 kW) የኤሌክትሪክ ኃይል የሚያመነጭ የሶላር ኃይል ሥርዓት የተገጠመላቸው ሲሆን፣ ለሁሉም ቤቶች ሙሉ የመብራት ዝርጋታ እየተከናወነላቸው ይገኛል።

በአሁኑ ሰዓት በመካሄድ ላይ በሚገኘው በዚህ የርክክብ ሥነ-ሥርዓት ላይ የጌርዳ ሄንከል ፋውንዴሽን የቦርድ አባልና የቀድሞው የጀርመን አምባሳደር ክቡር ማርቲን ኮብለር (H.E. Mr. Martin Kobler)፣ የአርባ ምንጭ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፕሬዝደንት ዶ/ር ኢ/ር አብደላ ከማል፣ የምርምርና ትብብር ምክትል ፕሬዝደንት ዶ/ር ተክሉ ወጋየሁ፣ እንዲሁም የአካዳሚክ ጉዳዮች ምክትል ፕሬዝደንት ዶ/ር ኢ/ር ቦጋለ ገማርያም ተገኝተዋል። ከእነሱም በተጨማሪ የኮንሶ ዞንና የቀበሌው አመራሮች፣ የአካባቢው ሀገር ሽማግሌዎች እንዲሁም የተፈናቃይ ቤተሰቦች በቦታው ተገኝተዋል።
