Dr. Musa Mohammed Ali (PhD, Associate Professor), faculty member at Hawassa University and East African Regional Coordinator for the African Reproducibility Network (AREN), delivered a public seminar entitled “Open Science and Antimicrobial Resistance: Building Collaborative Solutions for a Global Threat.” on June 25/2026.
The seminar examined antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as a growing global health challenge that threatens the effectiveness of modern medicine and affects human, animal, and environmental health.
Dr. Musa highlighted major challenges facing AMR research, including fragmented data systems, limited access to scientific evidence, poor reproducibility of research findings, and inadequate interdisciplinary collaboration.
A key focus of the presentation was the role of Open Science in accelerating progress against AMR through enhanced collaboration, transparent research practices, open access to knowledge, and responsible data sharing. Participants also explored the FAIR Data Principles and the One Health approach as important frameworks for addressing complex public health challenges.
Drawing on experiences from the African Reproducibility Network (AREN), Dr. Musa shared examples of how African researchers and institutions are advancing open and reproducible research through capacity building, networking, and collaborative initiatives.
The seminar concluded with a call for stronger partnerships and greater adoption of Open Science practices to support effective responses to antimicrobial resistance and other global health threats.
