የባሕር ዳር ዩኒቨርሲቲ በ2019 ዓ.ም የትምህርት ዘመን ትምህርት ሚኒስቴር ባወጣው የመግቢያ መስፈርት መሰረት በማታ (Extension) እና በርቀት (Distance) መርሃ ግብሮች በመጀመሪያ ዲግሪ እንዲሁም በPGDT ተማሪዎችን ተቀብሎ ማሰልጠን ይፈልጋል።

Bahir Dar Institute of Technology Holds Curriculum Validation Workshop

The Bahir Dar Institute of Technology (BiT) successfully hosted a Curriculum Validation Workshop centered on Outcome-Based Education (OBE), bringing together faculty deans, instructors, institutional leaders, and stakeholders to review and validate academic programs.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Mitiku Damtie, Scientific Director of Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, underscored the importance of carefully preparing curricula, noting that each program is expected to guide academic delivery for at least five years. He emphasized the need to align courses with technology and digitalization, while prioritizing innovation and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Amare Kassaw, Deputy Scientific Director for Academic Affairs, provided orientation to participants, stressing that the Institute must design forward-looking curricula that meet the demands of modern education.
The workshop concluded with parallel sessions, where faculty members engaged in in-depth discussions around their respective curricula, ensuring that programs reflect the Institute’s mission of quality, continuous improvement, internationalization, and innovation.

Alumni Memories: Dr.Theodros Atlabachew!

Dr.Theodros Atlabachew joined the Former Polytechnic Institute’s (PTI) Metal Technology department in 1964 E.C. He joined the department completing his studies at Weizero Siheen comprehensive high school. Following his graduation from PTI, he joined Ethiopian Airlines as a junior mechanic. Aspirations to continue his study lead him to quit his job after a year and join University of Economics-Varna where he specialized in Economics and Tourism study at M.A & PhD levels.

Following the completion of his study and leaving his lucrative job at BBC, he returned back to his country and served for decades in Tourism Commission under the request of the then commissioner, Fisseha Geda.

Dr.Theodros has a fat CV showing his versatile role as a leader and volunteer; project developer and supervisor; consultant and manager of business and public enterprises; researcher and lecturer; elected board member and president of various heritage, professional and business organizations etc. This helped him particularly to put his own imprint in the tourism and hospitality industry of the country.

Dr.Theodros believes that the quality technical education he received from the former PolyTechnic Institute (BiT-BDU) together with his PG studies at Varna helped him to have a life-long success in his professional life.

Currently, he is the secretary of Poly-BDU alumni association and its founding member. Such spirited initiative in the alumni association might have been powered by his active engagement in extracurricular activities during his student years at PTI like playing as a guitarist in the “Moon rock” band, representing his department in soccer team, enjoying rowing "Tankwa" & fishing at Lake Tana on weekends and being a regular attendant of movies at Bahir Dar city hall.

Other than these, studying at the then small, beautiful and neat Bahir Dar city helped him to instill in himself a sense of integrity watching the city's dwellers defining traits of fear of God, kindness, fidelity and compassion.

5th National Cyber Talent Summer Camp Challenge Program, second round as Bahir Dar University Held at BiT–BDU

In a decisive step toward building a digitally skilled generation, Bahir Dar University, in collaboration with the Information Network Security Administration (INSA), has launched the 5th National Cyber Talent Training Program. This marks the second time Bahir Dar University has hosted the initiative, underscoring its growing role in shaping Ethiopia’s technological future.
The program was introduced by Dr. Amare Kassaw, Deputy Scientific Director for Academic Affairs, who highlighted its long-standing impact and detailed its objectives.
Dr. Mitiku Damtie, Scientific Director of Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, gave a detailed explanation about the institution, the works being carried out by the university, and the training program.
This statement reflects a comprehensive institutional overview, covering both the university’s activities and the training program.
Dr. Mitiku Damtie, emphasized that the training provided to students helps enhance their software capacity and cyber skills. He stated that the university is working to build a skilled workforce in cybersecurity to realize the 2030 Digital Initiative plan. He added that in the second round of training, 80 young people are currently being trained.”
The Deputy Head of the Amhara Region Innovation and Technology Bureau, Yichale Yigzaw, stated that efforts are being made to make the region’s services technology-supported and digital. He explained that cybersecurity training is currently being provided at Bahir Dar and Debre Berhan Universities. He added that the plan is to expand this training to all universities in the region in the future.”
This shows a strong push toward digital transformation in regional services, with a focus on cybersecurity training and capacity building at universities like Bahir Dar University and Debre Berhan University.
Mr. Bishaw Beyene, Director of INSA’s Cyber Talent Center, explained that the program is designed to protect Ethiopia’s information systems, strengthen cyber sovereignty, and foster innovation. He stressed the importance of nurturing youth with the intellectual, physical, and ethical capacity to thrive in a rapidly changing technological world.
The Deputy Director General of Information Network Security Administration, Hannibal Lema, stated that young people possess deep potential, are eager to discover new things, and are quick to embrace new ideas and experiences. He emphasized that this is why focus has been placed on youth. He noted that the training participants have been given the opportunity to gain awareness of cybersecurity, improve their skills, build their character, and deepen their knowledge of technology. He added that going forward, they will strive to serve their country effectively in the fields of cybersecurity and technology.”
This highlights the emphasis on youth empowerment, the importance of cybersecurity awareness, and the role of technology education in preparing the next generation to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Participants expressed that the training has enhanced their cybersecurity awareness, improved their technical skills, and strengthened their professional identity, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to Ethiopia’s digital transformation.
In his closing remarks, Professor Enyew Adgo, Vice President for Research and Community Engagement at Bahir Dar University, noted that universities have historically been at the forefront of technological transformation. He emphasized that in today’s digital era, Ethiopia must invest in knowledgeable and skilled youth to remain competitive globally. He affirmed that the collaboration between Bahir Dar University and INSA is both timely and essential, urging other universities to expand and sustain similar initiatives.

Dr. Birhanu Bulcha Delivers Public Lecture at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology

Dr. Birhanu Bulcha, a researcher at NASA (U.S. Space Science) and founder of the Sheger Institute of Technology, delivered a public lecture at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology under the theme “Impacts of Hands-on STEEM Education and Innovation on Youth Empowerment and National Development.” The lecture was held at Washera Hall and attended by faculty, students, and staff.
The event was opened by Dr. Amare Kasaw, Deputy Director for Academic Affairs at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, who welcomed the guests and emphasized that such lectures allow young people to learn from successful individuals and inspire them to achieve greater heights.
Dr. Birhanu explained that the Sheger Institute of Technology (SIT), established near Addis Ababa in Sheger City, provides full scholarships to outstanding students from across Ethiopia. Currently, the institute has enrolled 242 students, of whom 30% are female.
In his message to partners, Dr. Birhanu stated: “Your collaborations are part of something meaningful and historic.” He highlighted that SIT works with partners in areas such as academic excellence through student/ staff mobility, space science and aerospace technology, AI, cyber systems and smart city integration, energy, nuclear science, and advanced materials. He concluded with the vision: “Together, we are shaping Ethiopia’s future.”
Closing the program, Dr. Mitiku Damtie, Scientific Director of Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, thanked the guests for sharing their experience and expressed confidence that future collaborations will continue in partnership and solidarity.
