Statement on the Killing of Judge Warke Fakensa

The tragic killing of Mrs. Warke Fakensa, a judge serving at Walmara Woreda Court, while carrying out her judicial duties is a shocking and deeply disturbing incident. According to available information, the attack occurred following the delivery of a judgment in a property division case arising from a divorce dispute. The perpetrator, reportedly dissatisfied with the court's decision, fatally shot Judge Warke Fakensa and also attacked his former spouse before attempting to take his own life.

This heinous act represents far more than an attack on an individual judge. It is a direct assault on the rule of law, the administration of justice, and the independence and integrity of the judiciary. Judges perform a vital public function by resolving disputes according to the law, and they must be able to do so without fear of violence, intimidation, or retaliation.

The killing of a judge in a courtroom while administering justice strikes at the very foundation of a legal system governed by law rather than force. Such acts threaten public confidence in judicial institutions and undermine the ability of courts to provide fair and impartial justice.

This tragedy calls for a thorough investigation, accountability for all criminal acts committed, and renewed attention to the security and protection of judges, court personnel, litigants, and all individuals present within court premises. It also serves as a reminder that disagreements with judicial decisions must be addressed through lawful mechanisms such as appeals and other legal remedies, not through violence.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of Judge Warke Fakensa and stand in solidarity with the judiciary during this difficult time. Her service to justice and the rule of law should be remembered with respect and honor.
