In 2009, while I was in South Sudan, there was a prevailing sentiment among many that criticized those who graduated from Ethiopian institutions. At that time, I too held the belief that Ethiopia lacked a quality education system.
However, I have since witnessed firsthand the strengths of Ethiopian education. I now understand that the negative perceptions were often due to the actions of a few individuals who did not fully commit to their studies and thus tarnished the reputation of an otherwise reputable educational system.
I want to encourage my fellow South Sudanese to move beyond outdated mindsets. If our education system is truly superior to that of Ethiopia, then why are so many of our students struggling in Ethiopian public universities? Multifaceted were facing total dismissal, in fact, Our pride should hinder our progress.
Education requires commitment and dedication.
If you have the opportunity to pursue an undergraduate, postgraduate, or PhD program, I urge you not to hesitate in choosing an Ethiopian university.
Just a year ago, one South Sudanese student received a scholarship to study in Ethiopia but declined it due to negative perceptions about the quality of education there, opting instead for Tanzania.
The key takeaway is this: Education is not determined by the name of a country or the prestige of an institution. Quality education is a reflection of your own focus and dedication. Without commitment, you will miss out on valuable knowledge.
I hope that recent graduates like us and others will share insights about the transformative educational system in Ethiopia.
