Material exploration, craftmanship and human creativity are at the core of Aalto ARTS, but we’re also curious about technology. Could new technologies such as AI play a supporting role in imagining new ways of designing and making — especially in a tangible, physical context?

This October, Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture takes part in Dutch Design Week with ‘art-ai-fact’, an exhibition featuring multiple designs with an AI component in them. From architecture and computational textiles to adaptive furniture and experimental fabrication, the exhibition brings together diverse approaches to the future of design.

The Dutch Design Week is one of the most creative design events in Europe, showcasing experimental perspectives and cutting-edge design. If you’re in Eindhoven between 17-25 October, come visit us! You can find Aalto University’s exhibition at Strijp-S area, Klokgebouw, Klokgebouw 50, Map No. B4

Take a peek at Finland’s biggest and the most expressive masquerade – Maskerad 🪩

An annual celebration of TOKYO, the student association for art and design students at Aalto University, Maskerad has a story that goes way back!

The first edition, Ateneum Maskerad, took place in the early 1900s, when the University of Art and Design Helsinki (a predecessor of today’s Aalto ARTS) was based in Ateneum building.

Back then, students and teachers gathered for masquerade parties in Helsinki’s restaurants. But the parties came to an end in the 1950s – rumour has it that partygoers managed to get Maskerad banned from every restaurant in Helsinki.👀

Luckily, the students revived the tradition in 2001 as Arabia Maskerad. With 800 participants, fire-eaters and even n**e snake dancers, it was such a hit that it simply had to continue! 🔥

Today, Maskerad brings people together every year with a new theme, great music and some seriously spectacular costumes. 🎭

And this year is a special one: Tokyo turns 65! The theme is ‘Collapse of the Archives’, so take your pick from any previous Maskerads, like Vive l’Art, Paradise Under Construction, Underwater World or Horror Circus. The best costume wins a prize! 🏆

The 2026 Finlandia Prize for Architecture goes to the Kuusijärvi Smoke Saunas! 🔥

Big congratulations to our alums, architects Julia Herttell & Kaisa Riippi from Mer Architects, Jenni Hölttä & Minna Lukander from Talli Architects, landscape architect Milla Hakari from Loci Landscape Architects, and everyone in the working group! 💐🏆

Located by Lake Kuusijärvi in Vantaa, the new smoke sauna, changing rooms and information buildings were completed in 2025, complementing the area’s popular outdoor recreation services. 🌊

The architecture fits naturally into its surroundings, combining traditional materials with modern wooden architecture. Log structures, dark timber-clad exteriors and green roofs blend into the forest, while the design preserves as much of the existing vegetation and terrain as possible. 🌲

Designed for the City of Vantaa by Mer Architects and Talli Architects, in collaboration with the City of Vantaa, the project combines technical skill, aesthetic sensitivity, respect for nature, sustainability, accessibility and a strong sense of community. 🫶

The saunas are open to everyone at an accessible price. So if you’re a sauna person, or have always wanted to try a smoke sauna, you know what to do! 🧖🔥

Camilla Naukkarinen is the Young Designer of the Year 2026! Big congratulations! 👏😍

Camilla is an MA graduate from Aalto University’s Fashion, Clothing and Textile Design programme. She combines historical craft techniques with a striking design language to create a whole that challenges the viewer to look at familiar things from a new perspective. 💫

Her winning entry, created for this year’s theme “What a Surprise”, features hand-woven flowers made from synthetic hair fibres and metal wire, with each flower sewn onto the base fabric by hand. 🪡

The idea draws inspiration from a Victorian-era tradition in which flowers were made from the hair of loved ones and assembled into memorial wreaths. Hair has also been a recurring theme in Camilla’s own life and work, influenced by her mother and grandmother, who both worked as hairdressers. 🪮

Attention, please! 🪩 This is the theme of Aavistus Festival 2026 – a biennial of audiovisual art and VJ culture in Helsinki.

The festival presents an international lineup of VJ and audiovisual performances, media art installations, screening of video art and fulldome films, projection mapping works, talks, workshops, and more.

Aavistus was founded by our Visual Communication Design students Merle Karp and Anni Tolvanen, Aalto Medialab alum Suvi Parrila, and producer Hannu Häkkinen in 2020. Since then, many Aalto students have joined the core working group and the production team.

The festival fosters innovation and creativity in audiovisual arts, enriching Helsinki’s cultural scene and giving audiences a unique opportunity to explore its diverse world.

We are celebrating the 90th birthday of Juhani Pallasmaa this week! 🤩

Finnish architect and educator Juhani Pallasmaa is widely known for his lectures, essays and books, many of which have become touchstones in the discussions on human experience and architecture. But his thinking and legacy extend well beyond any single text or line of thought.

Throughout his life, Pallasmaa has engaged with philosophy, neuroscience, literature, poetry, film and the visual arts, continually returning to questions of perception, imagination, memory, solitude and the relationship between the individual and the built environment.

The predecessors of Aalto University have also had the great pleasure of having Pallasmaa as Rector of he University of Art and Design Helsinki (1970–71), and as Professor at Helsinki University of Technology (1991–97).

Join us’ for Phenomena: Celebrating the Influence and Legacy of Juhani Pallasmaa’, a symposium marking his 90th birthday and reflecting on the relevance of his thinking today. Speakers will explore his ideas on how architecture shapes what we feel, see, and share in everyday life.

Featuring an international group of prominent architects and thinkers, including: Fuensanta Nieto & Enrique Sobejano, Yvonne Farrell & Shelley McNamara, Peter MacKeith, Susan Stewart, Sarah Robinson and Juliette Kennedy.
