Opinion: Communication challenges?
Autumn has arrived, old students are returning from summer jobs to school, and the little freshmen are excitedly viewing the Karamalmi campus where the next year, or possibly several, will be spent.
The board of K**A has returned from summer holidays ahead of schedule and, during their meeting, prepared for the start of the autumn season with the new students in mind. Enthusiasm and ideas are in the air. When the first orientation day arrives, the board members are energetically setting up a booth and preparing overall sales for the new students from early morning. The overall sales process has been organized for maximum efficiency: the freshmen are directed in groups into a classroom that has been reserved way in advance through Tuudo. The fifth-floor lobby/lounge is, as usual, efficiently utilized for setting up booths, and students can easily explore the offerings by moving around.
After the orientation, an email notification has arrived. Leppävaara High School would have needed the classroom that had been reserved for the overall sales. An explanation is demanded. Sorry, what?
When the board members finally had time to open OMA after the busy orientation day, scrolling through the page indeed revealed a notice published on August 16th. In the notice, it was stated that Leppävaara High School had been granted the use of two classrooms on the fifth floor. Metropolia's floor. K**A's, METKA's, UIO's, and HTO's office floor. The common hangout floor for our students. The floor for which just last year, after extensive negotiations and persuasion, board games and Xbox had been acquired for the students, allowing them to genuinely relax and take a breather from their studies during their breaks.
We at K**A are immensely disappointed by the lack of communication. We didn't receive any information regarding the matter, and especially, we weren't given any opportunity to participate in any form of negotiation concerning the allocation of the spaces. Despite our active efforts to engage in cooperation and open communication regarding the use of the Karamalmi facilities, we were not consulted at all in the decision-making process, which affects us and therefore the hundreds of students we represent. Even our umbrella organization, the student union METKA, had no knowledge of the situation before the first day of school.
We are concerned about the well-being, energy, and safety of the students at Karamalmi campus. In May the library services were discontinued, and now anyone can freely access the fifth floor without keys, which compels us to cease the lounge activities as well. We cannot take the risk that an occasional visitor to the floor might damage or sn**ch our consoles, games, or contents from the fridge. Students also have to consider more heavily whether they can leave their laptops in the classroom during breaks or if they have to carry all their belongings everywhere. Additionally, more people on the floor naturally create more noise. How can we ensure a peaceful and recovering environment for the students' valuable breaks?
One of K**A's most important responsibilities is to enhance the benefit and well-being of all our students on campus. We have been completely disregarded in this crucial discussion, either deliberately or thoughtlessly. We are feeling disappointed, angry, and saddened.

Mielipidekirjoitus: Viestinnällisiä haasteita?
Syksy on koittanut, vanhat opiskelijat palaavat kesätöistä kouluun ja pienet fuksit katselevat kirkkain silmin Karamalmin kampusta, jossa seuraava vuosi tai mahdollisesti useampikin tulee kulumaan.
K**A ry:n hallitus on palannut kesälomilta jo etukäteen ja suunnitellut kokouksessaan syyskauden alkamisen valmiiksi uusia opiskelijoita ajatellen. Intoa ja ideoita leijuu ilmassa.
Kun ensimmäinen perehdytyspäivä koittaa, hallituslaiset ovat reippaina aamusta alkaen pystyttämässä ständiä ja valmistelemassa haalarimyyntiä tuoreille opiskelijoille. Haalarimyynti on organisoitu mahdollisimman tehokkaaksi: siihen on etukäteen varattu Tuudosta luokka, johon fuksit ohjataan ryhmä kerrallaan. Viidennen kerroksen aula/lounge on totutusti tehokäytössä ständien pitämisessä ja opiskelijoiden on helppo kiertää tarjontaa tutkien.
Perehdytyksen jälkeen sähköpostiin on kilahtanut viesti. Leppävaaran lukio olisi tarvinnut käyttöönsä luokkaa, joka oli varattu haalarimyyntiin. Selvitystä vaaditaan. Että mitä?
Kun hallituslaiset ehtivät vauhdikkaan perehdytyspäivän päätteeksi avata OMAn, sivua skrollaamalla tosiaan löytyy 16.8. julkaistu tiedote, jossa kerrotaan Leppävaaran lukion saaneen käyttöönsä kaksi luokkatilaa viidennestä kerroksesta. Metropolian kerroksesta. K**An, METKAn, UIO:n ja HTO:n toimistokerroksesta. AMK-opiskelijoiden yhteisestä hengailukerroksesta. Siitä kerroksesta, johon vasta viime vuonna pitkällä neuvonpidolla ja suostuttelulla on saatu opiskelijoille mm. lautapelejä ja Xbox, jotta tauoilla voisi hetken ajaksi aidosti rentoutua ja päästää irti opiskelusta.
Me K**Assa olemme valtavan pettyneitä tiedotukseen, tai lähinnä sen olemattomuuteen – emme saaneet infoa asiasta emmekä varsinkaan päässeet millään muotoa osallistumaan neuvotteluun tilojen luovutuksesta, vaikka olemme omalta puoleltamme aktiivisesti pyrkineet yhteistyöhön ja aktiiviseen kommunikaatioon tilojen käytön suhteen. Meitä ja täten myöskään edustamiamme satoja opiskelijoita ei kuultu lainkaan näin suuren opiskelijoita koskevan päätöksen teossa. Edes kattojärjestömme opiskelijakunta METKA ei tiennyt asiasta mitään ennen ensimmäistä koulupäivää.
Olemme huolissamme Karamalmin opiskelijoiden viihtyvyydestä, jaksamisesta ja myös turvallisuudesta. Toukokuussa Karamalmin kirjastopalvelut lakkautettiin ja nyt viidenteen kerrokseen on kenellä tahansa vapaa pääsy ilman avaimia, minkä myötä joudumme lopettamaan myös lounge-toiminnan. Emme voi ottaa riskiä, että satunnainen kerrokseen tulija rikkoisi tai veisi mukanaan konsolit, pelit tai jääkaapin sisältöä. Opiskelijat joutuvat myös entistä suuremmin puntaroimaan, voiko esimerkiksi läppärin jättää luokkaan tauon ajaksi vai joutuuko kaiken omaisuutensa kantamaan mukanaan kaikkialle. Lisäihmiset kerroksessa luovat luonnollisesti myös lisää melua. Miten takaamme rauhallisen ja palauttavan ympäristön opiskelijoiden arvokkaisiin taukoihin?
Yksi K**An ehdottomasti tärkeimpiä tehtäviä on huolehtia kaikkien opiskelijoidemme eduista ja hyvinvoinnista kampuksellamme. Meidät on joko tahallisesti tai ajattelemattomuudesta sivuutettu täysin tässä tärkeässä keskustelussa. Olemme pettyneitä, vihaisia ja surullisia.
