FREE ONLINE LEARNING MATERIALS ON KNOWLEDGE GRAPHS

The Knowledge Graph (KG) Autumn Seminar was held last week at the National Library of Finland, attended by 170 registered participants (!), and several inspiring presentations were heard from the industry and public sector organizations actually using Semantic Web (SW) technologies.

A common theme in many presentations was how to use KGs to mitigate challenges of Large Language Models and Generative AI and use LLMs and Generative AI to create KGs. People also asked there about free learning materials about SW technologies available on the Web.

HISTORY OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH IN FINLAND

She interviewed during her research me, Eero Hyvönen, and professor Matti Pietikäinen as AI activists of the previous “AI summer” in the 1980s.

The interview brough back some memories from the 80s and 90s. I had the pleasure to be one of the organizers of the First Finnish AI Symposium (STeP) [1] in 1984 along with Jouko Seppänen and Markku Syrjänen, at the Helsinki University of Technology (TKK), today Aalto University. AI was a hot topic then, also on a political level like today, with the new idea of knowledge-based systems. This event started the series of organizing bi-annual STeP-conferences that constituted later arguably the longest series of computer science conferences in Finland up to 2010. Nokia Data was starting their AI businesses in 1984 related to the new generation of AI computers, Lisp-machines, and guaranteed the financial outcome of organizing STeP 1984. Back then I was hired from TKK as a part-time “Lisp evangelist” consultant by Nokia Data. Lisp was used widely in AI programming and there was finally a specific moment in the Finnish state budget for buying expensive Lisp machines in the universities. However, financial support from Nokia was not needed as the conference was very successful, attended by lots of researchers, and therefore very profitable.

STeP 1984 turned out to become a kind of starting point for AI research in Finland, although the idea of AI was invented already in the 40s and 50s in UK and the US, and there had been some interest in AI in Finland by individual researchers earlier. In particular, STeP 1984 contributed to establishing the Finnish AI Society (FAIS) (https://stes.fi) when organizing STeP 1986 – the surplus of STeP 1984 could now be used for organizing the next conference without financial concerns. The first chair of FAIS was research professor Seppo Linnainmaa. An interesting piece of history is that he actually invented the back propagation algorithm before Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton. This has been acknowledged later also by Geoffrey Hinton but the work in Finland was not widely known as it took place in a setting different from machine learning (managing rounding errors). The most famous Finnish researchers related to AI at that time included professors of formal logic, especially Jaakko Hintikka, the father of epistemic logic, and Georg von Wright famous in AI due to his deontic logic. Research on symbolic logic was then central in AI research. Professor Teuvo Kohonen, the famous neural network researcher from the subsymbolic side of AI and inventor of, e.g., Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), did not consider himself as an AI researcher initially, but later on presented also in FAIS conferences. Merging the two approaches to AI, symbolic and subsymbolic, into neuro-symbolic AI to mitigate their challenges, such as the knowledge acquisition bottleneck on the symbolic side and hallucinations on the sub-symbolic side, is a hot research topic today.

With other AI activists, also I started to participate in FAIS activities, first as a board member and later as chair. The activities in the 80s and 90s were very interdisciplinary and involved researchers from various research fields, including linguistics, philosophy, cognitive science, music, art, and so on. Several seminars were organized by FAIS on topics such as intellectual history, philosophy, artificial life, and cognitive science in addition to more computational topics, such as object-oriented modeling and neural networks. We even organized with URSA Astronomical Society a seminar in Heureka Science Center on extraterrestrial life and how it could be identified. Proceedings of FAIS seminars were published as books in the FAIS publication series. FAIS also published the printed magazine “Arpakannus” on a regular basis. It was an important communication channel for community building because in the 80s and 90s the WWW was not really available and emails were not commonly in use.

Arpakannus (cf. the image attached) actually means a Lappish drum, arguably the first “computer” or “expert system” used in Finland and beyond [2]. Arpakannus drumhead (“screen”) was painted with symbols and was used by a shaman (“computer wizard”) by setting a piece of bone (“cursor”) on top it. When drumming (“computing”), the cursor moved from symbol to symbol and could answer questions and tell the future. It was clearly an expert system!

We therefore selected arpakannus as the logo for the first STeP 1984 conference. The logo was designed by artist Elisa Oesch based on an original drumhead pattern [3] but by adding there also a new contemporary symbol, a microchip. The STeP-1984 logo was later selected as the logo of the FAIS, too.

Arpakannus has also been proposed as one interpretation of the “Sampo” [4], the mythical artifact of the national Finnish epic Kalevala that gives its owner riches and good fortune. It is a bit like the ring in J. R. R. Tolkien’s (1892-1973) fantasy novel the Lord of the Rings; Tolkien was actually a fan of Kalevala. Kalevala, STeP 1984, and the interdisciplinary activities of FAIS still inspire our current research at the Aalto University and University of Helsinki on Digital Humanities and the Sampo model and series of systems [5] that are in use on the Semantic Web in Finland and beyond.

But this is part of later AI history of the 2000s in Finland, perhaps to be studied in Niia Junnila’s further research or by some other historians later.

LEAGUE OF NATIONS AND UNITED NATIONS ON THE SEMANTIC WEB:
New International “Sampo” System Presented at the Digital Humanities 2026 Conference in South Korea

The latest international member in the Sampo Series of web services [1], “League of Nations Sampo” [2], has been introduced by a paper and presentation [3] at the leading Digital Humanities (DH) conference DH 2026 in Daejeon, South Korea. For the first time, this Sampo publishes for DH researchers and other users the 27,000 pages of the minutes of the League of Nations (LoN) (1920-1946) assembly meetings as FAIR linked open data and a portal available on-line. The data is provided by the United Nations Library & Archives enriched by a biographical knowledge graph about the 3,100 people mentioned in the minutes, contextualized by real world data. This work continues now by extending the LoN Sampo with General Assembly minutes of the United Nations (1945-), the follow-up organization of the LoN, and minutes of the Inter-Parliamentary Union IPU (1889-).

LoN Sampo is joint work led by the Geneva Graduate School, Switzerland, in collaboration with the United Nations Library & Archives, Geneva, PSL University and EPITA, Paris, Aalto University, Espoo, and University of Helsinki, and is based on the framework developed for the similar system “ParliamentSampo – Finnish Parliament on the Semantic Web” [4], a part of the Finnish FIN-CLARIAH/DARIAH-FI research infrastructure [5].

Laughter and interjections in Parliament: The latest version of Parlamenttisampo.fi portal enables analyses

Last year, journalist Merja Niilola of the National Broadcasting Company YLE contacted us and asked if the Parlamenttisampo.fi service could be used to analyze laughter in the Parliament of Finland, as the minutes of the plenary sessions of the Parliament contain mark-up not only about interjections but also about laughter in the hall. So, we did analyses of laughter in the Parliament for YLE news: who has laughed at whom, are men or women funnier speakers, which party representatives are laughed at the most and the least, what kinds of things are laughed at, etc. This work resulted in, among other things, this funny story for the main TV news broadcast:

The analyses were done by programming, but at the same time it was decided to implement analyses of both laughter and interjections also in the next online version of the ParliamentSampo portal. A peer-reviewed academic article has now been written about this work for the SEMANTiCS 2026 conference to be held in Ghent, Belgium, 15-17.9 (pre-print below):

How to use a cloud of Cultural Heritage knowledge graphs in Digital Humanities research: SampoSampo - Connecting Everything to Everything Else

Linked Open Data (LOD) can be published on the Semantic Web as semantic mark-up embedded in HTML documents or as Knowledge Graphs (KG) in SPARQL endpoints, on top of which applications are developed. KGs typically share the same entities, such as persons, organizations, and places, which means that the data in different KGs about the entities can complement (enrich) or contradict each other, if only we knew what entities are the same in different KGs. For this purpose, entity alignment systems are needed. Examples of such systems include, e.g., the Virtual Authority File VIAF.org of national libraries around the world, the international Linked Open Data Cloud, Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV), and Europeana. This talk presents a new data alignment service and semantic portal "SampoSampo - Connecting Everything to Everything Else" implemented on top of a cloud of 26 related Cultural Heritage (CH) KGs and systems in different CH domains, including biographies, genealogy, fiction literature, historical letters, art, military history, parliamentary discussions, and historical opera performances. The novelty of SampoSampo is to show in practise how a data alignment system can be used for five practical use-cases in Digital Humanities research (DH): 1) Using a LOD alignment service to enrich data in other Cultural Heritage LOD services and applications. 2) Providing global search, browsing, and data-analytic tools over a cloud of KGs. 3) Searching and checking data quality issues based on a cloud of KGs. 4) AI-based knowledge discovery in a LOD cloud based on relational search and Large Language Models. 5) Enhancing data literacy by data-analyses over a KG cloud. SampoSampo was published openly on the Semantic Web in January 2026.

Kansainliitto (1920-1946) ja YK (1946-) semanttisessa webissä:
Sampo-infrastruktuurin uusi kansainvälinen sovellus julkaistu

Poliittisen päätöksenteon avoimuus ja läpinäkyvyys on demokratian ja oikeusvaltioperiaatteiden keskeinen edellytys. Kansallisella tasolla tätä voidaan edistää julkaisemalla parlamenttien puhe- ja päätösaineistoja datana modernien FAIR-periaatteiden mukaisesti ja helppokäyttöisinä verkkopalveluina, kansainvälisellä tasolla vastaavasti YK:n kaltaisten kansainvälisten multilateraalisten järjestöjen kokousaineistojen avulla.

Tässä tarvittavaa teknologiaa ja sovelluksia on kehitetty Suomessa osana Suomen Akatemian ja EU:n rahoittamaa kansallista FIN-CLARIAH/DARIAH-FI tutkimusinfrastruktuuriohjelmaa ja verkkopalvelua ”Parlamenttisampo – eduskunta semanttisessa webissä” [1]. Suomalaista Sampo-infrastruktuuria on nyt onnistuneesti sovellettu YK:n edeltäjän Kansainliiton (1921-1946) kokousaineistojen julkaisemiseen vastaavalla tavalla kansainvälisessä yhteistyöhankkeessa sveitsiläisen Geneva Graduate Instituten johdolla, YK:n kirjaston ja arkiston aineistoihin perustuen [2]. Kokousaineistot, yhteensä yli 14 000 sivua ja tiedot yli 3000 kansainvälisestä diplomaatista, on nyt saatavilla tutkimus- ja sovelluskäyttöön FAIR-datana ja uutena Sampo-malliin perustuvana verkkopalveluna ”League of Nations – Minutes of Multilateralism on the on the Semantic Web” [3]. Järjestelmä esiteltiin kansainvälisesti toukokuussa sekä semanttisen webin että digitaalisten ihmistieteiden tutkijoille (ESWC 2026 ja DARIAH 2026 -konferenssit [4]). Ks. demovideo YouTubessa [5].

Työ jatkuu seuraavaksi YK:n ja IPU:n kokousaineistojen parissa.

The League of Nations (1920-1946) and the UN (1946-) on the Semantic Web:
A new international application of the Sampo infrastructure online

Openness and transparency of political decision-making is a key prerequisite for democracy and the rule of law. At the national level, this can be promoted by publishing parliamentary speech and decision materials as data in accordance with modern FAIR principles and as easy-to-use online services, and at the international level, by using meeting materials from international multilateral organizations such as the UN.

The technology and applications required for this have been developed in Finland as part of the national FIN-CLARIAH/DARIAH-FI research infrastructure program and the online service “Parliamentary Sampo – Parliament in the Semantic Web” funded by the Research Council of Finland and the EU [1]. The Finnish Sampo infrastructure has now been successfully applied to the publication of the meeting materials of the League of Nations (1921-1946), the predecessor of the UN, in an international cooperation project led by the Swiss Geneva Graduate Institute, based on materials from the UN Library and Archives [2]. The meeting materials, totaling over 14,000 pages and information on over 3,000 international diplomats, are now available for research and application use as FAIR data and as a new web service based on the Sampo model, “League of Nations – Minutes of Multilateralism on the Semantic Web” [3]. The system was presented internationally in May to researchers in both the semantic web and digital humanities (ESWC 2026 and DARIAH 2026 conferences [4]). Work will now continue on the minutes materials from the UN and IPU.

Sotasampo 2.0 -hanke käynnistyi: Suomi itsenäinen 110 vuotta

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegelin (1770-1831) mukaan ”historia opettaa meille, että emme opi historiasta mitään”. Ukrainan sota tuntuisi jälleen kerran todistavan väitteen oikeaksi. Itsenäisyytemme 100-vuotisjuhliin 2017 valmistunut Sotasampo-datapalvelu ja -portaali ”Sotasampo - talvi- ja jatkosota semanttisessa webissä” [1] (https://sotasampo.fi) pyrkii kuitenkin osoittamaan, että Hegel olisi väärässä: järjestelmän tavoitteena on lisätä ymmärrystämme viime sotiemme inhimillisestä hinnasta ja uhreista sekä edistää näin rauhaa. Verkkopalvelun sivuilla on ollut yli 1,3 miljoonaa kävijää ja se ollut toiseksi suosituin ”Sampo-järjestelmä” [2].

Itsenäisyytemme 110-vuotisjuhlien 2027 lähestyessä Sotasammosta luodaan uusi versio 2.0. Kehitystyön kohteena ovat erityisesti Kansallisarkiston Menehtyneet-tietokanta, siihen liittyvät päivitykset ja kansalaisten lähettämät tiedot sekä sankarihautausmaat-näkymä, jota päivitetään tiedoilla luovutetusta Karjalasta. Sotasampo 2.0 [3] toteutetaan uudella Sampo-UI-työkalulla ja arkkitehtuurilla, mikä mahdollistaa haun ja selailun ohella aineistojen data-analyysit ja visualisoinnit digitaalisissa ihmistieteissä. Järjestelmä on osa kansallisen tutkimustietoinfrastruktuuriohjelman DARIAH-FI (https://dariah.fi) linkityn avoimen datan osuutta [4].

Hanke toteutetaan Semanttisen laskennan tutkimusryhmässä (SeCo) Aalto-yliopistossa ja Helsingin yliopistossa. Hankkeen ohjausryhmään kuuluu Tammenlehvän Perinneliiton johdolla laaja joukko organisaatioita, kuten Kansallisarkisto, Kaatuneiden Muistosäätiö, Sotavainajien muiston vaalimisyhdistys, Sotamuseo sekä Sodan ja rauhan keskus Muisti. Hanketta rahoittaa Kaatuneiden Muistosäätiö.

War Sampo 2.0 project launched: 110 years of independence of Finland

According to Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831), “history teaches us that we learn nothing from history”. The war in Ukraine seems to prove this claim once again. However, the WarSampo data service and portal “War Sampo – Finnish World War 2 on the Semantic Web”, completed in 2017 for the 100th anniversary of our independence [1] (https://sotasampo.fi), tries to prove that Hegel was wrong: WarSampo aims to increase our understanding of the human cost and victims of our recent wars and, and thus promote peace. The online service has had over 1.3 million visitors and has been the second most popular “Sampo system” [2] in use in Finland.

As the 110th anniversary of our independence in 2027 approaches, a new version 2.0 of WarSampo will be created. The development work focuses in particular on the National Archives' war victims database, related updates and information submitted by citizens, as well as war cemeteries data, which is updated with information from the Karelia area that was annexed to the Soviet Union. WarSampo 2.0 [3] is implemented with the new Sampo UI tool and architecture, which enables not only intelligent search and browsing but also data analyses and visualizations for Digital Humanities research. The system is part of the Linked Open Data work of the national research information infrastructure program DARIAH-FI (https://dariah.fi) [4].

The project is implemented by the Semantic Computing Research Group (SeCo) at the Aalto University and the University of Helsinki. The project's steering group, led by the war heritage association Tammenlehvän Perinneliitto, includes a wide range of organizations, such as the National Archives, the Foundation for the Memory of the Fallen, the Association for the Preservation of the Memory of the War Victims, the War Museum, and the Muisti Center for War and Peace. The project is funded by the Foundation for the Memory of the Fallen.

Tietämysverkot 2026 – Semanttinen syysseminaari Helsingissä 27.8.2026

Kansalliskirjastolla järjestetään torstaina 27.8. 12.00–17.00 Tietämysverkot 2026 – Semanttinen syysseminaari, matalan kynnyksen tietämysverkostoitumistapahtuma.

Aihealueita joita käsittelemme ovat mm. tietämysverkot (knowledge graph), linkitetty data, kontrolloidut sanastot, ontologiat, tiedon yhteentoimivuus, isojen sisältökokoelmien metatiedot ja semanttinen web. Tilaisuudessa kuullaan esityksiä käyttötapauksista, alan tutkimuksesta, julkishallinnon ja yritysten sovelluskohteista, alan standardeista ja palveluista sekä muista ajankohtaisista teemaan liittyvistä näkökulmista.

Tapahtuma on suunnattu tietämysverkkojen kehittäjille ja käyttäjille julkisella sektorilla, korkeakouluissa ja yrityksissä sekä muille asiasta kiinnostuneille. Tilaisuus on keskusteleva ja uusia ideoita sekä kohtaamisia mahdollistava verkostoitumistapahtuma. Seminaari järjestetään Kansalliskirjaston auditoriossa, jonka jälkeen halukkaat jatkavat vapaamuotoista verkostoitumista ravintolaolosuhteissa. Semanttiseen syysseminaariin on myös etäosallistumismahdollisuus.
