We are solving Earth’s challenges from space! 🛰️

Aalto is one of the few universities in Europe where a small satellite can be designed and built entirely in-house, from start to finish. Aalto’s student and research satellites are also operated from Aalto’s own ground station.

Today, there are dozens of Finnish satellites in space, and most of them involve Aalto expertise in one way or another.

The space sector was transformed at the turn of the millennium, when a field once dominated by superpowers opened up to new players thanks to more affordable components and small satellite standards. 🔭

The satellites developed at Aalto use radiation-resistant materials and have tested a plasma brake that safely brings a satellite out of orbit at the end of its mission – helping to reduce space debris.

‘The modern world relies on satellites. Moreover, our understanding of planetary processes and for example, climate change, would not be possible without satellite sensors,’ says Professor of Space Technology Jaan Praks. 🌌

Thank you, Stockholm 🫶

Yesterday evening, over 70 Aalto alumni, researchers and partners gathered at the Embassy of Finland in Stockholm. The programme brought together perspectives from technology, leadership and design on how to build a more resilient future.

The event reflected what lies at the heart of Aalto: artists and designers working side by side with engineers, scientists and business experts to develop solutions the world needs.

With more than 900 Aaltonians living across Sweden, the evening was a great chance to strengthen local connections and discuss future collaboration.

Thank you to the Embassy of Finland in Stockholm for hosting us and to everyone who joined us.

Higher education has never been more relevant or more crucial to society as in the era of artificial intelligence, says Aalto University President Ilkka Niemelä.

The challenges AI brings won’t be solved by AI alone—nor can we rely on AI to bring truly new directions for the benefit of all.

We need people who are genuinely curious, capable of critical thinking, able to create and validate knowledge we can trust, he says. Universities bring together what societies in the AI era need most: understanding of the world and cutting-edge technologies and the profound ability to question, assess, and innovate.

Niemelä gave his words on 1 September 2026 at the opening ceremony of Day One, which kickstarts the academic year at Aalto University.

'Otaniemi feels like coming home', said Aalto alum and Minister of Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen, who joined us in opening the new academic year. She had a hopeful message for our students, and emphasized the importance of human capital and taking concrete actions to develop our society further.

'You will create companies. You will develop new technologies. You will become researchers, engineers and entrepreneurs — perhaps even politicians. Some of you will invent things that we cannot yet imagine.

It may sound like a cliché, but it is true: you are the masters of your own future. And your choices will also shape Finland's future.

So go out there. Be curious. Be ambitious. Be brave. Take risks. Fail fast — and try again.'

Would you fly in a plane with 10% crash probability? If that seems risky, think about the odds of AI destroying civilization, a scenario researchers call P(doom). Katarina Slama isn’t (too) worried – she is an AI safety researcher who says we need to think about the price we’re willing to pay for fast and powerful AI. Katarina has worked on AI safety and alignment as an early employee at OpenAI and most recently at the UK AI Security Institute.

In this AI podcast episode, Katarina Slama chats with Arno Solin and Eric Malmi about AI risk, safety and consciousness, as well as her journey from small-town Finland to top universities in the US. Listen now, link in comments!

Rehtori Ilkka Niemelä puhui Aalto-yliopiston lukuvuoden avajaisissa 1. syyskuuta 2026.

--

Right now, we need public investments in higher education and research more than ever, says Aalto University President Ilkka Niemelä. Universities give us the ability to generate new ideas and solutions and to respond to unexpected changes in the world.
In this hard-to-predict world, higher education develops the most important human skills: we learn to think critically and to work collaboratively. It connects us with global networks of bright minds who share a burning interest in the world and how it works.

Niemelä gave his words on 1 September 2026 at the opening ceremony of Day One, which kickstarts the academic year at Aalto University.

Oletko joskus saanut sähköpostin, joka tuntuu vähän oudolta, m***a samalla aidontuntuiselta?

Join us at NORDEEP 2026! 👩‍🔬

We’re excited about our partnership with NORDEEP Deep Tech Business Summit because this is where research meets real-world impact. Aalto University produces a steady flow of research-based startups and commercialization cases, and NORDEEP gives us the right setting to showcase what we have in our entrepreneurship pipeline.

We’re bringing a strong mix of people: Aalto researchers, Research to Business (R2B) teams, and startups from Aalto Startup Center. The goal is simple: Make it easier for researchers to explore the R2B path and for investors and industry partners to see what Aalto is currently brewing in the lab and preparing for markets.

If you’re in Helsinki or Espoo, come by for a conversation. Whether you’re scouting for new ventures, looking for co-creation opportunities, or curious about how to take research forward, we’re happy to connect on site.

Warmest congratulations to Professor Mari Lundström on receiving the prestigious Faraday Medal from the Royal Society of Chemistry! 🏅

The international honour acknowledges Lundström’s pioneering work in hydrometallurgy, specifically in sustainable electrochemical processes for the recovery and recycling of critical raw materials.

‘Europe currently consumes around 20% of the world's metals but produces only a few per cent of them. Therefore, strengthening Europe's competitiveness and self-sufficiency in mineral processing and metal recycling is of high importance,’ Lundström says.

Lundström is the first Finnish researcher to receive the Faraday Medal, with previous recipients including Millennium Technology Prize winners and scientists who supervised future Nobel laureates. ✨
