Aalto-yliopisto tarjoaa tulevana lukuvuonna maksutonta koulutusta arkkitehdeille, maisema-arkkitehdeille ja muille suunnittelun ja muotoilun ammattilaisille.

Koulutuskokonaisuuden tavoitteena on päivittää erityisesti arkkitehtien ja maisema-arkkitehtien osaamista tähän päivään tuomalla ydinosaamisen rinnalle mm. ammattimaisen liiketoiminnan johtamisen, taloushallinnon ja sopimusjuridiikan koulutusta.

Sisällöt on suunniteltu yhdessä Suomen Arkkitehtiliitto SAFA:n, Arkkitehtitoimistojen liiton (ATL) ja Suomen Maisema-arkkitehtiliitto MARK:n kanssa.

”Nykypäivän nopeasti muuttuvassa toimintaympäristössä perinteinen suunnitteluosaaminen ei riitä vastaamaan arkkitehtialan haasteisiin eikä menestyvän toimiston johtamiseen. Tarvitaan uudenlaista osaamista”, sanoo Arkkitehtitoimistojen liitto ATL:n asiantuntija-arkkitehti Roni Koski-Tuuri.

Syksyllä 2026 ja keväällä 2027 tarjottavat maksuttomat opinnot mahdollistaa 260 000 euron suuruinen rahoitus, jonka myöntää Jatkuvan oppimisen ja työllisyyden palvelukeskus (Jotpa).

Thrilled to congratulate Adam Foster, Jani Oksanen, and Jukka Suomela on receiving prestigious ERC Advanced Grants 🎉

🔬 Adam Foster and his team will develop an AI-infrastructure linked to a scanning probe microscope. ‘In this project, we target the fabrication of designer spin materials that have possible applications in quantum computing and sensing.’

🔆 Jani Oksanen’s project aims to open a path toward LEDs that can refrigerate, pump heat and harvest waste heat with capabilities unavailable with today’s technologies. ‘Light itself serves as the refrigerant rather than, for example, hydrofluorocarbons, which are typically strong greenhouse gases or highly flammable.'

💻 Jukka Suomela’s project investigates which tasks in computer networks could be accelerated using quantum computation and quantum communication. ‘It is still unknown which tasks quantum methods would genuinely speed up in distributed networks. We aim to prove mathematically what quantum methods can and cannot do.’

Sähkön riittävyys voi olla koetuksella Suomessa jo 2030-luvulla ⚡

Tuoreen tutkimuksen mukaan sähköautojen yleistyminen ja sääriippuvainen sähköntuotanto voivat yhdessä lisätä tilanteita, joissa sähkö ei riitä kattamaan kulutusta Suomessa.

"Ennusteemme mukaan Suomen sähköntuotannossa on jo 2030-luvun alussa merkittävä vaje vähätuulisina talviaikoina. Tuotantokapasiteetti ei välttämättä riitä vastaamaan sähköajoneuvojen nopeasti kasvavaan määrään ja niiden lataamisen aiheuttamiin kulutuspiikkeihin", sanoo energiatekniikan väitöskirjatutkija Ilona Malmipuro.

Tutkijoiden mukaan Suomella on edessään Pohjoismaiden suurimmat haasteet sähkön riittävyydessä, sillä meillä on korkea sähkön kokonaiskysyntä suhteessa vakaan, säästä riippumattoman sähköntuotannon kapasiteettiin.

Siksi myös kulutuksen joustavuutta tarvitaan sähköjärjestelmän tasapainottamiseksi. Kun sähköautoja on paljon, etenkin lataamisen ajoittamisella on merkittävä vaikutus sähkön kulutukseen.

"Sähköautoja ladataan tyypillisesti iltapäivällä ja alkuillasta. Jos suurin osa suomalaista tottuisi lataamaan sähköautonsa tuulisella säällä, yöllä tai viikonloppuna, sähkön mahdolliset tehopulatilanteet vähenisivät erittäin merkittävästi", Malmipuro sanoo.

Experiencing weak WiFi? Researchers at Aalto University have developed a solution in metacrystal panels: passive, 3D-printed smart panels that can guide wireless signals without extra electronics, a power supply or active tuning. No more cable mess! 🔌

The metacrystal panels can be fabricated using 3D printing, leaving the estimated price of consumable material at a few tens of euros per piece. These custom parts can easily be integrated into of walls, ceilings and other infrastructure.

Unlike many existing intelligent surfaces, the panels can also handle several incoming waves at the same time, operate over different frequency bands simultaneously, work in reflection or transmission mode, and even fully absorb unwanted signals. 'This is a key requirement for realistic wireless communication,’ says Mahdi Asgari, a doctoral researcher from Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering – especially with the requirements of 6G.

On Friday we gathered for Ceremonial Conferment, as Aalto community celebrated our new Doctors of Science in Technology! 🎩

The event was hosted by Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering, and followed by a dinner and academic dances.

Within two years there were:

⭐ 477 doctors graduating, with 148 taking part in conferment
⭐ 16 jubilee doctors – those who completed their doctorate 50 years ago – with 5 taking part on the day
⭐ 7 Honorary Doctorates conferred, receiving the highest recognition awarded by the University

“Tarvitsemme rohkeutta pysähtyä kysymään, tehdäänkö asioita oikealla tavalla vai pitäisikö ne ajatella kokonaan uudestaan.”

Näin sanoo Amerin Kulttuurisäätiön toimitusjohtaja Jukka Eklin, kun hän perustelee säätiön tekemää 600 000 euron lahjoitusta Aalto-yliopiston Radikaalin luovuuden keskukselle.

Radikaali luovuus Aallossa tarkoittaa uudenlaisia ajattelutapoja, kokeiluja ja uskallusta toimia toisin – taiteen, tieteen, teknologian ja liiketoiminnan risteyksessä. Kyse ei ole erillisestä ohjelmasta, vaan koko yliopiston läpäisevästä aloitteesta, jota Aalto-yliopiston taiteiden ja suunnittelun korkeakoulu koordinoi. Tavoitteemme on, että rajoja rikkova ajattelu kuuluu kaikkien opiskelijoiden osaamiseen ja siirtyy yrityksiin, julkiseen sektoriin ja yrittäjyyteen.

🌍 From London to Brussels

This week, Aalto alumni, researchers and partners came together in two European cities.

In London, Aalto alumni joined fellow graduates from Finnish universities for an evening of conversations, networking and reconnecting with old and new friends. At the event one of our keynote speakers Rasmus Vuori put it well: creativity is a vital resource for resilience. The ability to imagine alternatives helps us adapt, renew and find better ways forward.

In Brussels, Aalto University's The Pathfinders exhibition at the New European Bauhaus Festival brought the community together to explore research-driven solutions for a more circular future. While only about 7% of the global economy is currently circular, the exhibition highlighted how researchers are tackling barriers in construction, battery recycling and textiles.

🫶 Two cities, one community. A reminder that ideas move forward when people come together.

Can AI teach soft skills at work—not just boost efficiency?

Aalto University researchers are building an AI method to spot and resolve team conflicts before they flare up. This tech strengthens the human side of teamwork.

‘Conflicts, negotiations, cultural awareness, and decision‑making are areas where AI hasn’t yet been able to help teams. But now it can help develop empathy,’ says Ville Eloranta.

Meet TeamTwins: a “digital mirror” that helps you reflect on your traits, attitudes, and working styles in relation to teammates and partners. It already has hundreds of users across the university and industry.
