00014 Helsingin yliopisto OTSCC represents the 8th most common cancer worldwide. Our research on OTSCC has two main focuses:

1) To investigate the effects of tumor microenvironment (TME) components, such as tumor associated fibroblasts, macrophages, infla

mmatory cells and matrix molecules including extracellular vesicles in the progression and chemo-radiation therapies on OTSCC. Our research group has developed human myoma tumor tissue based models (myoma discs and myogel) which already are widely used for cancer invasion studies. We are developing the model further for various applications. Including cancer invasion and drug testing

2) To identify the clinically most useful prognostic markers for improving early stage OTSCC diagnostics.

Novel human lymph node-derived matrix supports the adhesion of metastatic oral carcinoma cells

Background 3D culture is increasingly used in cancer research, as it allows the growth of cells in an environment that mimics in vivo conditions. Metastases are the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in cancer patients, and solid tumour metastases are mostly located in lymph nodes. Currently,....

The effect of matrices on the gene expression profile of patient-derived head and neck carcinoma cells for in vitro therapy testing

Objective Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a highly aggressive tumor with a 5-year mortality rate of ~ 50%. New in vitro methods are needed for testing patients’ cancer cell response to anti-cancer treatments. We aimed to investigate how the gene expression of fresh carcinoma tis...

Evaluation of in vitro and in vivo personalized cancer treatment assays for oral squamous cell carcinoma

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a common cancer with a high heterogeneity and few approved treatments. OSCC is one of the least explored areas …
