Upcoming FIMM dissertation! 📢

MSc Sadiksha Adhikari from Caroline Heckman’s group will defend the doctoral dissertation "Refining Characterization of Hematological Malignancies Using Emerging Sequencing Technologies" in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, on 28 August 2026 at 13:00.

Associate Professor Jessica Nordlund, Uppsala University, Sweden, will serve as the opponent, and Professor Liisa Kauppi as the custos. The thesis has been supervised by Dr. Caroline Heckman, Dr. Esa Pitkänen and Dr. Markus Vähä-Koskela.

The public examination will take place at the following address: Biomedicum, Lecture Hall 1 (Haartmaninkatu 8), and can also be followed remotely.

In this doctoral thesis, Sadiksha tested the utility of emerging genomic and transcriptomic sequencing technologies in refining disease characterization in hematological malignancies.

The thesis assesses the added value, technical limitations, and clinical applicability of different bulk and single-cell sequencing technologies, and reports how these approaches capture disease complexity at multiple levels, including genomic alterations, clonal architecture, and cellular dynamics.

A large international study led by FIMM researchers has identified genetic factors that influence how people tolerate common blood pressure medications.

The study highlights how genetic variants enriched in the Finnish population can reveal biological insights that may remain hidden in larger but more genetically diverse populations.

One of the study’s most striking findings was a genetic variant in a gene called NTSR1 that protects against the persistent dry cough often caused by ACE inhibitors, a widely used type of blood pressure medication. The variant is found in around 3% of Finns but is extremely rare in most other populations.

The researchers also linked the CYP3A4*22 variant, which affects a key drug-metabolizing enzyme, to an increased likelihood of switching away from calcium channel blockers.

According to the lead authors Felix Vaura and Samuli Ripatti, the findings move the field a step closer to more personalized treatment of hypertension, where medication choices could be guided by a patient's genetic profile.

The study was published in the European Heart Journal (link in the comments).

A gene variant found in 1 in 30 Finns may protect against the dry cough that often leads patients to stop taking ACE inhibitors, a common blood pressure medication. The study also identified a genetic predictor of intolerance to another blood pressure drug class, bringing personalized hypertension t...

FIMMin tutkijoiden vetämässä Kudos – Cellular Twins -projektissa kehitetään lasten syöpien diagnostiikkaa ja yksilöllisiä hoitoja.

Tekoälyyn nojautuva Kudos – Cellular Twins -projekti sai Business Finlandilta kaksivuotisen kaupallistamisrahoituksen.

Nature Medicine -lehdessä julkaistussa tutkimuksessa raportoitiin kaiken kaikkiaan 26 fibromyalgialle altistavaa geenivarianttia.

Osa löydetyistä geeneistä, kuten Huntingtinia säätelevä GPR52-geeni on jo aktiivisen lääkekehityksen kohteena muissa sairauksissa."

Suuri kansainvälinen tutkimus on löytänyt uusia fibromyalgialle altistavia geneettisiä riskitekijöitä.

Uusia työkaluja Alzheimerin taudin varhaiseen havaitsemiseen on kehitteillä!

Eero Vuoksimaan ryhmän tuoreiden tutkimusten perusteella puhelinhaastattelun ja verestä mitattavien biomarkkereiden yhdistelmä voi auttaa tunnistamaan Alzheimerin tautiin liittyviä varhaisia muutoksia jo ennen diagnoosia.

Noin 10 %:lla tutkituista yli 65-vuotiaista havaittiin sekä kognitiivista heikentymistä että Alzheimerin tautiin liittyviä biomarkkereita veressä.

Alzheimerin taudin hidastamiseen tähtääviä hoitoja kehitetään aktiivisesti. Siksi tulevaisuudessa sairauden tunnistaminen yhä aiemmassa vaiheessa tulee olemaan keskeistä hoidon oikean ajoituksen kannalta.

Naisten sairauksia on tutkittu vähemmän.

What if genetic information could help identify people at risk of glaucoma years before vision is affected?

A new study based on the FinnGen dataset shows that polygenic risk scores can predict both the lifetime risk of glaucoma and the likelihood of more severe disease progression. The findings could support more targeted screening and earlier diagnosis in the future.

The study was led by Nina Mars, Joni Turunen, and colleagues from FIMM/University of Helsinki, the Folkhälsan Research Center and HUS Eye Clinic.

Polygenic risk scores can identify individuals at substantially increased risk of developing glaucoma and those whose disease is likely to progress more rapidly. A new screening model based on these findings will soon be tested in Southern Finland.
