🔆 🎻 What are the most important responsibilities of a violin teacher? How do you help a young student become not only a skilled instrumentalist, but a musician who feels, understands and communicates through music?

These questions are at the heart of methodology of violin teaching by Tatyana Pogozheva, a pioneering violin pedagogue whose holistic approach was ahead of its time. In her approach, she explores the first seven years of a child's violin studies, combining practical teaching advice with a deep understanding of children's development.

Pogoževa believed that the foundation of learning music is simple: A child must feel safe and comfortable during their lesson.
More than half a century later, her insights continue to guide and inspire violin teachers around the world.

We now have her pedagogy summed up in one also available in English - read more about the publication 👉

“Methodology of Violin Teaching” serves as a valuable tool for today’s music educators as well.

A new global study from the University of the Arts Helsinki provides the most comprehensive international picture to date of how musically gifted children are educated and supported.

"Care for the whole child should be a non-negotiable obligation of every educational environment, whereas artistic excellence should always remain a child’s choice, never something imposed, whether or not they are gifted”, says researcher Guadalupe López-Íñiguez.

The results of the study are now available for everybody to utilize - read more 👇

🎉 🎵Practice pupil applications at the Sibelius Academy open today!

We train instrument and voice teachers who, as part of their studies, need practice pupils of various levels. Practice pupils attend weekly instrumental or vocal lessons at the Sibelius Academy. These lessons are taught by a student and supervised and guided by a teacher of the Sibelius Academy. We are looking for a wide range of instrumentalists and singers as practice pupils, from young beginners to highly advanced performers.
The application period for the academic year 2026–2027 is 27 July–10 August 2026.

The application form will be available on the website once the application period begins. The page will also include details on the types of pupils sought for the upcoming academic year.

We train instrument and voice teachers, who gain valuable experience by practising their pedagogical skills with their practice pupils.

"I am a maximal optimist. Art is meaningful and more important than ever.

We are moving strongly toward a technocratic era, and when people talk about artificial intelligence, there is often a fear that it will swallow us whole. It won’t. Absolutely not. Technology cannot replace human interaction.

We have nothing to fear. We have so much to offer.

At the same time, we must take ownership of the full spectrum of our humanity and become bolder in our expression—not for the sake of novelty, and not simply because something is beautiful, but as a gesture from one human being to another. That requires courage, taking up space, and refusing to apologize for the existence of art."

We interviewed our Professor of Orchestral Conducting and Honorary Doctor Susanna Mälkki about visions, collaboration, the future, and Innoncence.

Professor of Orchestral Conducting, our Honorary Doctor Susanna Mälkki describes herself as an optimist. However, the arts should become even bolder and courageous.
