🎶 What happens when artists exchange ideas as gifts?

This summer, students from across the IN.TUNE - Innovative Universities in Music & Arts in Europe alliance came together in Helsinki to explore electroacoustic performance practices. Sharing scores, software, concepts and performance ideas, they turned creative exchanges into new artistic collaborations.
The journey continues this autumn through a joint online course connecting students and ideas from across the alliance.

🌍🎶 How can artistic collaboration be built on respect, reciprocity and Indigenous knowledge?

From 20–30 October, the international Third Spaces residency will bring together artists, researchers and students at Kallio-Kuninkala in Järvenpää to explore new ethical models of intercultural collaboration grounded in Indigenous values and ways of working.

Bringing together Sámi joik, Māori taonga pūoro, Indigenous Australian Yolngu Wägilak song traditions and musical influences from Brazil, Korea and Europe, the residency creates a unique environment for dialogue, creativity and mutual learning.

The collaboration will culminate in the Indigenous Voices: Third Spaces Collective concert at the Etnosoi! Festival in Helsinki on 30 October.

🌱 Sometimes research begins with a question. Sometimes it begins with listening.

A few years ago, flutist, educator and our doctoral researcher Livia Schweizer met the young musicians of the Aldo Parisot in Caicó, Northeast Brazil. A project that offers free music education to girls became one of the places where the first seeds of Treasure Hunt were planted.

Those encounters inspired questions that would later grow into a doctoral artistic research project:

✨ How can music-making build confidence and belonging?
✨ What happens when everyone is invited to create?
✨ Can listening become a way of building community?

Livia's recording Treasure Hunt is one outcome of that journey, but the real treasure lies in the shared process: listening, creating and learning together across cultures and continents. 🎉 On this International Day of the Girl, it is worth taking a moment to reflect on where role models come from.

🎵 In music, they are not created only on concert stages. They are also shaped through teaching, textbooks, and repertoire choices, through whose stories are told as part of music history.

Cellist, composer, and researcher Pinja Nuñez has examined how music education can unintentionally perpetuate a narrow view of who is recognised as a significant contributor to music.

This October, a new online course on Musician's health will take place for the students within the IN.TUNE - Innovative Universities in Music & Arts in Europe.

Our lecturer Päivi Arjas has been designing the course together with her colleagues in MDW - Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. The idea is to give insight on how to practise effectively without overloading themselves and identify physical and psychological risk factors before they lead to problems.

🎶 What if a choir could be more than a place for making music?

In her doctoral dissertation, Johanna Lehtinen-Schnabel explores how language-aware and multilingual choir practices can support not only Finnish language learning, but also social inclusion, community belonging and active citizenship. Her research challenges traditional disciplinary boundaries and asks how music education might better respond to the needs of contemporary society.

PREMIERE: Access Amplified Collective – Ne Degen? What is This?

Access Amplified Collective (AAC) brings together musicians and dancers from diverse cultural and (dis)ability backgrounds. Through intercultural music making and movement, they amplify issues of accessibility, (dis)ability, ableism, diversity, and inclusion.

Their debut music video “Ne Degen? What is This?” is released on the 28th of September 2026 on YouTube and social media platforms. This dynamic, co-created track features lyrics in Kazakh and Finnish languages, including a special collaboration with Elli Thesslund, a dancer living with Down syndrome.

The members of Access Amplified Collective (AAC) have come together through Sibelius Academy’s Global Music programme, which also hosts the accessible community course titled All Abilities Band (AAB).
“Ne Degen? What is This?” is also released as an audio track, as part of Aizhan Sultan’s doctoral album through Sibarecords. It aims to not only raise awareness of these issues, but to elevate disability pride and the voices of people with disabilities, whose perspectives are crucial yet often overlooked. Here, the performers want to raise their collective voices, claim the right to express themselves, and be seen in the way they want!
