Tervetuloa Karjalan teologisen seuran RAJAT-symposiumiin 9.-10.2.2026!

Tapahtuma on tarkoitettu kaikille aiheesta kiinnostuneille, m***a aivan erityisesti eri alojen yliopisto-opiskelijoille ja seurakuntien työntekijöille.

Symposiumiin on vapaa pääsy UEF:in opiskelijoilla, jatko-opiskelijoilla sekä henkilökunnalla! Ilmoittaudu mukaan 23.1. mennessä osoitteessa https://link.webropol.com/s/kts-rajat-2026 🤗

On the third day, we heard a keynote presentation by Iryna Fenno focusing on the Religion on Fire project, which focuses on mapping the devestation of war in the life of churches in Ukraine, as well as Harutyun Harutyunyan's keynote on Armenian history and the Armenian Apostolic Church's reactions and positions regarding war and church–state relations.

We would like to thank all the speakers and participants of the conference for the vivid, diverse, and respectful discussions on this highly topical theme. We will continue working on the theme "Orthodox Christian Churches and War" and hope to publish on it in the future.

On the second day of the conference "Orthodox Christian Churches and War",

Tornike Metreveli delivered a keynote exploring how the Russian Orthodox Church’s argumentation regarding canonical borders has evolved. He examined how the Church’s stance on aligning ecclesiastical boundaries with militarily changed borders has shifted from the 2008 war in Georgia to the 2022 full scale war in Ukraine.

The second keynote speaker, Cyril Hovorun, addressed the concept of the “long 20th century” in Orthodox political theology. He emphasized the need for Orthodox communities to reflect on their own historical tragedies, such as the Holodomor and Bucha.

In addition to the keynotes, we’ve had insightful paper sessions offering important perspectives on the impact of war on Orthodox Christianity, and the ways Orthodox Churches can exert influence in times of conflict.

To foster a safe space, the organizers have decided to limit photography at the venue. All images shared from the conference auditorium are taken by the organizing team.

The "Orthodox Christian Churches and War" conference began yesterday at the University of Eastern Finland.

The keynote address by Prof. Catherine Wanner highlighted the power of the ethics of care at the grassroots level within Ukraine’s polarized religious landscape.

A panel discussion explored the role of military chaplains during times of peace, war, and peacebuilding, and warned against the creation of enemy images in their work. Discussing these themes were (from left to right) fr. Mikko Sidoroff, fr. Sergiy Berezhnoy and Santeri Kytöneva.
