Joensuu Debate Society Joensuu Debate Society is part of the British parliamentary debating scene in Finland, we aim to have intellectual fun and better ourselves as speakers.

Welcome to the Joensuu Debate Society. Part of the Finnish debating scene, we aim to have intellectual fun and better ourselves as speakers, becoming more convincing, more natural and confident in front of people, and prepared for any conversational situation. Always know what to say! We encourage everyone to take debating as seriously as they want, creating your own goals. It does not matter what

your experience with debating is or what subject you specialise in – everyone has the possibility to learn new things. We make sure to provide ways of learning and improving for both beginners and more experienced debaters – the ultimate goal of course being that we make our society as strong as possible on the Finnish scale. For those who want to try more serious debating, there are tournaments frequently organised in Finland, in which societies across Finland and outside of Finland participate. The sky is the limit!

WHEN: Wednesday November 4 at 17:00 till 19:00.

Everyone is welcome to join us! We will debate topics most burning at Halloween, like which are a greater threat zombies or vampires. Confectionary is on the house so no need to trick us 😄 We hope we will see you there! Our debates are held in English.

Summer is coming to an end which means our weekly debates are coming back on September 10! Most of the debates will be held in room AU202 of the Aurora building, but the locale is different on some weeks. We'll make sure to inform everyone when those exceptions occur, so remember to follow this page :)

Dear Joensuu Debate Society members and the debating community of Finland at large, we are sorry that this has taken a while to write. It has taken us some time to process and we felt that everyone whose lives were touched by Timo should know. Unfortunately, Timo has passed away in May.

Timo was a wonderful, unique, and an incredibly loyal person. Our lives won’t just be as good without him. The debate society, too, loses one of its dearest members. We will always remember Timo’s hard work for the benefit of the society, his unwavering activity, and his camaraderie. There weren’t any events without him and his delicious food.

We hope that Timo now rests in peace and we wish strength to all those grieving their loss. Don’t hesitate to contact us to talk about Timo.

Autumn semesters have just begun and this will be the first Finnish national event for debating. That means that this will be a great opportunity to meet all of the new fresh faces and for all the beginners to meet other debaters fresh and experienced!
