Doctoral Researcher positions (6 positions) to the doctoral programme of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies are open. One post of Doctoral Researcher will be filled in the doctoral programme of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies in each department or school of the faculty (Department of Geographical and Historical Studies, UEF Business School, UEF Law School, Department of Health and Social Management, Department of Social Sciences, and Karelian Institute).

The positions will start on 1 January 2027 or as agreed. Please find more information below, and submit your application by 10 November 2026.

🤝 Team Borderlink met with the Taiwanese ambassador 林昶佐 Freddy Lim to talk about Finnish-Taiwanese relations, and incredible networking opportunities through music contacts.

🔗 Borderlink strengthens international collaboration between Itä-Suomen yliopisto - University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and National Taiwan University. Both junior and senior scholars participate in exchanges at the partner university. This autumn, the Taiwanese delegation visits Helsinki and Joensuu, and the UEF delegation visited Taipei last spring.

📣New project alert! We're working together with Heinävesi municipality to study housing challenges in rural areas. Together with local actors and residents themselves, we'll look for solutions to this challenges in an effort to boost the attractiveness of rural areas.

In Finland and elsewhere in Europe, rural depopulation and population ageing are affecting housing demand, with some homes being left vacant or falling into disrepair. At the same time, demand for second homes is increasing. This week, a project will be launched in North Karelia in which the University of Eastern Finland and the Municipality of Heinävesi are working together to develop sustainable rural housing. The Finnish contribution to the international Ruralise project is led by the Karelian Institute. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon programme, the project seeks solutions for promoting affordable and sustainable housing in rural areas.

The project is coordinated by the Institute for European Energy and Climate Policy Foundation (IEECP).

📣Heinäveden kunnan kanssa selvitetään maaseutuasumiseen ja alueen elinvoimaan vaikuttavia tekijöitä sekä etsitään yhdessä paikallisten toimijoiden ja asukkaiden kanssa ratkaisuja maaseudun asumisen haasteisiin.

Suomessa ja myös muualla Euroopassa maaseutujen tyhjeneminen ja väestön ikääntyminen vaikuttavat asuntojen kysyntään samalla kun osa asunnoista jää tyhjilleen tai rapistuu. Samaan aikaan vapaa-ajan asuntojen kysyntä kasvaa. Pohjois-Karjalassa käynnistyy tällä viikolla hanke, jossa Itä-Suomen yliopisto ja Heinäveden kunta ovat mukana kehittämässä kestävää maaseutuasumista. Kansainvälisen Ruralise-hankkeen Suomen osuutta johtaa Karjalan tutkimuslaitos. Euroopan unionin Horisontti-ohjelmasta rahoitusta saaneessa hankkeessa etsitään ratkaisuja siihen, miten voidaan edistää kohtuuhintaista ja kestävää asumista maaseudulla.

📆 Save the date! Zain Ul Abdin's public doctoral defence will take place on 11.09.2026 at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies. His research examines students' remittances and economic integration pathways.

🧑‍🎓 The opponent is Professor Johanna Waters (University College London) and the custos is Adjunct Professor Paul Fryer (University of Eastern Finland). The public defence will be in English. In-person and online participation are both possible.
