Greetings from New Zealand!

Associate Professor, Head of Department, Virginia Jones in the University of Otago and my colleagues gave me a mihi whakatau, which is semi-formal Māori welcome when I arrived in the Department of Nursing. They gathered around me in a circle and Kelly Tikao, who affiliates to the local iwi (tribe) Ngāi Tahu led the welcome in both te reo Māori (the Māori language) and English. Kelly welcomed not only me but my family and ancestors. She acknowledged my homeland and my research work. Afterwards, everyone introduced themselves in both languages, beautifully describing their own backgrounds and the communities they come from. The occasion was enhanced by a waiata Māori (a Māori song), and to round things off we enjoyed a morning tea with refreshments and the sharing of more stories. I would like to thank my entire workplace for the warm and unique welcome they gave me as I joined this team. It was a touching and heart-warming occasion.

During my academic research visit it has been a pleasure to meet the members of our research group and continue advancing our collaborative work into a multiple-birth family research led by Associate Professor Virginia Jones. I have given presentations on our research into multiple-birth families to various groups and attended research meetings as well as presented our University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and the Department of Nursing Science. I also had the opportunity to observe teaching sessions and talk to nursing students.

Spring is at its best, and the trees and flowers are in full, colourful bloom. At the weekend, we went with my colleague for a walk and marvelled at Port Hill’s magnificent scenery, its rugged natural landscape, the impressive cliffs and the watermarks left by history visible on them.

I would like to thank Tarja Kvist, Head of the Department of Nursing Science (UEF), and everyone who helped to make my visit possible, both here in Finland and in New Zealand.

Tekoäly on jo arkea sosiaali- ja terveydenhuollossa. Se on integroitunut osaksi työvälineitä tukien tiedon käsittelyä sekä potilaiden hoitoon liittyvää päätöksentekoa. M***a eteneekö teknologia nopeammin kuin sen käyttöä ohjaava tutkimusnäyttö, sääntely ja koulutus?

Itä-Suomen yliopiston hoitotieteen laitos yhteistyössä DIGIHOJO-hankkeen kanssa kutsuu terveydenhuollon ammattilaiset, opiskelijat, tutkijat ja kaikki aiheesta kiinnostuneet avoimeen yleisötapahtumaan Faster Than the Evidence? Tekoälyn mahdollisuudet ja vastuut sosiaali- ja terveydenhuollossa maanantaina 14.12.2026 klo 12.00–16.00. Maksuton tapahtuma järjestetään Canthia-rakennuksen auditoriossa CA101 (Yliopistonrinne 3, Kuopio) ja siihen voi osallistua myös verkon välityksellä. Ilmoittautuminen on avoinna 1.12. asti.

Tapahtuma kokoaa yhteen tutkimuksen, koulutuksen ja käytännön asiantuntijoita pohtimaan, miten tekoälyn mahdollisuuksia voidaan hyödyntää terveydenhuollossa turvallisesti ja vastuullisesti – potilasturvallisuutta ja ammattilaisten osaamista vahvistaen.

A warm welcome and thank you Professor Maria C. Katapodi!

We had the great pleasure of hosting Professor Maria C. Katapodi, PhD, RN, FAAN (Professor of Nursing Science, University of Basel; Switzerland) at our Department of Nursing Science on 12.–14.10.2026. Professor Katapodi is an internationally recognized researcher whose work focuses on hereditary cancer risk, cancer prevention, and supporting patients and their families.

During her visit, she led a "Writing a Research Paper" workshop for our master's and doctoral students as well as postdoctoral researchers. The workshop attracted a wonderful crowd of participants.

The visit was filled with inspiring meetings and discussions, including, among others:

• Planning future multidisciplinary research collaboration
• A visit to the Clinical Genetics Clinic at the Kuopio University Hospital
• A meeting at the Cancer Society of Northern Savo
• Exploring the beautiful autumn sights of Kuopio

– Jotta terveydenhuollon ilmiöiden monimutkaisuutta voidaan todella ymmärtää, tutkimuksessa on hyvä yhdistää ihmisten kokemuksia numeeriseen tietoon. Monimenetelmällisen tutkimuksen työkalut ovat kehittyneet nopeasti viimeisen vuosikymmenen aikana, sanoo professori Ahtisham Younas.

Hän on opettanut monimenetelmätutkimusta (mixed methods research) väitöskirjatutkijoille hoitotieteen valtakunnallisessa tohtorikoulutusverkostossa vuodesta 2024 lähtien ja toimii tällä hetkellä osa-aikaisena vierailevana professorina Itä-Suomen yliopiston hoitotieteen laitoksella Itä-Suomen yliopistossa Kuopiossa.

Monimenetelmätutkimuksessa yhdistetään ja integroidaan laadullisten ja määrällisten menetelmien elementtejä, ja näin saadaan kattavampi kuva tutkittavasta aiheesta, kuten vaikkapa eri hoito-ohjelmien vaikutuksista ja siitä, miten potilaat ne kokevat. – Kyse ei ole siitä, että tehtäisiin erillisiä tutkimuksia eri menetelmillä, vaan uusia näkökulmia syntyy menetelmien integraatiosta, johon on saatavilla yhä enemmän edistyneitä työkaluja.

Kanadassa Memorial Newfoundland-yliopistossa pääasiallisesti työskentelevän Younasin kutsui Kuopioon professori Tarja Kvist hoitotieteen laitokselta. – Halusimme vahvistaa tutkijoidemme menetelmäosaamista, ja hän on maailmanluokan asiantuntija tällä alalla, Kvist sanoo.

Tänään MASI-webinaarin luennoitsijat puhuivat ja keskusteluttivat yleisöä erittäin ajankohtaisista lääkitysturvallisuuden kysymyksistä: Lääkityspoikkeamien hinnasta (Jonna-Carita Kanninen FaT), Lähihoitajien lääkehoidon osaamisesta (Leena Laakkonen TtM), Sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoiden rajatusta IV-luvasta (Marita Knuutila TtM, väitöskirjatutkija), ja Muiden kuin lääkäreiden tekemien lääkemääräysten turvallisuudesta (Saija Koskiniemi TtT).

Keskiviikkona juhlimme laitoksemme uutta dosenttia, erityisasiantuntija Tarja Tervo-Heikkistä Pohjois-Savon hyvinvointialueelta. Tarja Tervo-Heikkisen dosentuurin ala on hoitotiede, potilasturvallisuus. Uudella dosentillamme on pitkäkestoinen yhteistyö hoitotieteen laitoksen tutkijoiden kanssa, erityisesti viime vuosina hoitotyösensitiivisten laatuindikaattorien parissa kansallisessa NurSeInQual-hankkeessa. Hoitotieteen laitos onnittelee lämpimästi Tarjaa.

Strengthening international collaboration in nurse prescribing research

Professor Marja Härkänen and Project Manager Saija Koskiniemi participated in the first Management Committee meeting of the European COST Action network ALIGN-NP, which focuses on nurse prescribing. The network brings together researchers and experts from across Europe to advance research, knowledge exchange, and collaboration in the field of nurse prescribing. Marja was selected to lead one working group, and Saija to co-lead another.

In August, Saija Koskiniemi also took part in the COST Leadership Programme, which supports young researchers in developing leadership skills and strengthening international research collaboration.

These international networks provide valuable opportunities for research and development collaborations across Europe.

Greetings from Singapore!

My academic research visit began at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where I was hosted by Professor Liaw Sok Ying, Head of Department, and Professor He Hong-Gu, Director for International Relations. The visit has involved getting to know my colleagues and familiarising myself with the activities of the Department of Nursing, as well as giving presentations at research seminars on research into multiple-birth families and collaboration. Through our research collaboration we have contributed to ongoing international research into multiple-birth families and student supervision. During the hospital visit, we spoke with nurses and doctors providing care for families with multiples and gained an insight into the work of various individuals.

Associate Professor Wilson Tam, Deputy Head for Research, organised a wonderful opportunity to observe a variety of simulation scenarios and use virtual reality as part of the learning process.

I would like to express my warmest thanks for all the invitations I received, the various opportunities provided and the successful arrangements made. Science, research and nursing are linked into a single whole, which we create together for the benefit of people.
