MSc Venla Rantala defended her PhD thesis “Development of sustainable purification methods for natural graphite and spent graphite for battery use” last Friday. Opponent was Professor Saeed Chehreh Chelgani from the Luleå University of Technology and Custos was Docent Sari Tuomikoski. Congratulations Venla!

Last week our Sustainable Nutrients project had an interesting day as we visited Puolanka, “the capital of the world pessimistic thinking”, together with our colleagues from Kajaani University of Applied Sciences and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Heikki Kanniainen (Business manager of Puolanka) introduced us to the local biogasification plant where they produce heat and electricity from municipal sludge. We also got to collect some water samples for our nutrient removal testing.

Today on 31.03.2026 Tomi Parviainen defended his PhD thesis "Discovery and development of small-molecule inhibitors for ADP-Ribosyl hydrolyzing enzymes". Opponent was Professor Jari Yli-Kauhaluoma from University of Helsinki and Custos was Docent Juha Heiskanen. Congratulations Tomi on successful defense! 🎉
