The Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) is a large university-based research group operating within the Department of Communications Engineering at the University of Oulu, Finland. The objective of CWC is to provide a widely recognized, high-quality international research and learning environment for its 130 research staff members thus enabling the production of cutting edge research results
and novel innovations in cooperation with its research partners. In all its activities, CWC strives towards rapidly reacting to changes occurring in its operational environment as well as to the expectations and needs expressed by its national and global research partners. The scope of CWC spans across a comprehensive range of wireless telecommunications topics. The research builds on radio channel competence, expanding through communications signal processing and radio access technologies, finally addressing the wireless internetworking domain. CWC also applies this basic knowledge to the application of wireless technology in several fields, including medical ICT as well as energy and environment. The operational basis of CWC is largely dependable on its funding, 75-80% of which is granted by highly competed external sources including European Commission, European Defence Agency, Tekes, Academy of Finland, and national and international companies. The research group runs 40-50 externally funded research projects annually. The organisation aims at continuous knowledge building and achievements in the form of academic outputs, i.e. degrees and publications. These objectives are harmonised with the demands of project work where the interests of all cooperation partners are combined to achieve ideal results.
