Enabled by doctoral research at University of Oulu: From a doctoral researcher to an entrepreneur

Practical need acted as a driver for producing more environmentally friendly construction materials when Juho Yliniemi, current Assistant Professor at the University of Oulu, founded Keko Geopolymeerit Oy based on his doctoral studies. The idea developed from the frustration that the use of mineral side streams and the involved opportunities raised no interest in the industry producing these side streams. The business has grown steadily since the company was established.

University of Oulu is among the three percent of the ranked top-level universities
In the world there are around 17,000 to 23,000 universities depending on the method of calculation. University of Oulu is usually ranked in the top three per cent. UniOulu’s strengths lays on its publishing activity in high level publications (e.g. Nature, Science) but also citation indexes. In the fields of science, UniOulu ranks well in e.g. medicine, life sciences, biology, information technology and data processing, electrical engineering, geography.
UniOulu takes part in about five rankings every year. The most important of these are the “Shanghai list”; Times Higher Education (THE) ranking; QS World University Rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds; and the CWTS ranking by Leiden University.
