Arctic or Antarctic?
The polar regions have many things in common, but also some differences.

🐧 Penguins?
Antarctic. Polar bears cannot eat penguins because they live on opposite sides of the Earth.

🏘️ People living there?
Arctic. Antarctica has no permanent population and does not belong to any country. The Arctic is home to about four million people.

💚 Auroras?
Both. At the North Pole, they are called Aurora borealis. At the South Pole, they are called Aurora australis.

Arktis vai Antarktis?
Molemmat ovat napa-alueita, m***a mitä eroa niillä on?

🐧Pingviinit?
Antarktis.

💚Revontulet?
Molemmat. Pohjoisnavalla revontulia kutsutaan nimellä Aurora borealis ja etelänavalla Aurora australis.

In August representatives from the Arctic Centre and the Regional Council of Lapland visited Canada as part of a case study between Lapland and Northern Quebec examining the opportunities and challenges facing sparsely populated northern regions in a changing operating environment.

A return visit to Lapland was paid earlier this week by representatives of Canada and the OECD, and the delegation gained insight into education, research, regional attractiveness initiatives, and business activities taking place both across Lapland and at a more local level. During their four-day stay in Lapland the delegation visited multiple actors in three different locations - in Levi, Tornio, and Rovaniemi.

The Lapland representation of the delegation included participants from both the Arctic Centre and the Regional Council of Lapland. Scientific research done in the Arctic Centre - especially in sustainable land use and the engagement of local people in decision-making processes - was introduced by Professor Tanja Joona, Stakeholder Engagement Specialist Miia Kärnä, and Junior Researcher Sara Inget.

The case study and visits are part of the OECD and European Commission project "Regional Development Policy for Industrial Transition: A Transatlantic Perspective," which examines how to foster sustainable and inclusive industrial transitions in regions. The case study between Lapland and Northern Quebec has served as one of the six pilot cases in the project.

Niiden silmien valoa heijastavan kalvon rakenne muuttuu vuodenaikojen vaihtuessa.

👀 Kesällä silmien väri on kullankeltainen. Silmien valoherkkyys vähenee, m***a porot näkevät tarkemmin.

👀 Talvella silmät muuttuvat sinisiksi. Sinisen värin avulla poro näkee paremmin kaamoksen hämärässä valossa. Talvella näköherkkyys on jopa tuhatkertainen kesään verrattuna.

Yes, you read that right👀

👀 Reindeer have a unique adaptation that helps them survive in Arctic conditions. The structure of the light-reflecting layer in their eyes changes as the seasons change.

👀 Reindeer have a unique adaptation that helps them survive in Arctic conditions. The structure of the light-reflecting layer in their eyes changes as the seasons change.

👀 In summer, their eyes are yellow. Their eyes become less sensitive to light, but their vision is sharper.

👀 In winter, their eyes turn blue. The blue color helps reindeer see better in the dim light of the polar night. Their visual sensitivity can be up to a thousand times greater than in summer.

A new report “Towards understanding and managing cumulative impacts in Sápmi: approaches & collaboration – Workshop Report with focus on spatial data, reindeer and reindeer herding” was just released in Nordic cooperation to explore the use of spatial data and methods in assessing cumulative impacts of industrial land use on traditional Sámi livelihoods.

The impacts of the green transition on Sápmi and reindeer herding areas have been increasing due to factors such as forestry, rare-earth mineral mining, and the production of hydroelectric and wind power. The planning processes for these projects are highly fragmented, and the cumulative impacts and the perspectives of local people have not been adequately considered during the planning stages.

To address these cumulative impacts and to build a stronger knowledge base for just decision-making, the report produced by a group of experts from Norway, Sweden, and Finland summarizes existing research and focuses—using Nordic examples—on the cumulative impacts of industrial land use on reindeer herding and reindeer. The publication outlines six practical methods for mapping and predicting cumulative impacts of industrial land use on Sámi livelihoods, and the tools presented are also useful for reindeer herding areas as a whole.

The report is part of the BAVIS project funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the report process received funding also from the Nordic Joint Committee for Agricultural and Food Research (NKJ). The Sámi Parliament granted free, prior, and informed consent for the project in November 2023.

The project was coordinated by Bernardo Brandão Niebuhr from the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research and the Arctic Centre took part in the project with researcher Sirpa Rasmus.

Pohjoismaisena yhteistyönä laadittu uusi raportti ”Towards understanding and managing cumulative impacts in Sápmi: approaches & collaboration – Workshop Report with focus on spatial data, reindeer and reindeer herding” tarkastelee paikkatiedoaineistojen ja -menetelmien hyödyntämistä teollisen maankäytön saamelaisten perinteisiin elinkeinoihin kohdistamien kumulatiivisten vaikutusten arvioinnissa.

Raportti on osa Ulkoministeriön rahoittamaa BAVIS-hanketta, ja raporttiprosessi sai rahoitusta yhteistyöelimeltä nimeltään Nordic Joint Committee for Agricultural and Food Research. Saamelaiskäräjät myönsi hankkeelle vapaan, tietoon perustuvan ennakkosuostumuksen marraskuussa 2023.

Hankkeen koordinaattorina toimi Bernardo Brandão Niebuhr (Norwegian Institute for Nature Research), ja Lapin yliopiston Arktisesta keskuksesta työhön osallistui tutkija Sirpa Rasmus.
