John Morton Center for North American Studies - University of Turku The JMC’s activities include a research network, monthly "Current Issues" seminars, conferences, annual thematic workshops, and a blog.

The national John Morton Center for North American Studies focuses on analyzing contemporary societal, political, and cultural phenomena related to the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean from various transnational perspectives. a, and Mexico. Our academic focus is on interdisciplinary and multi-methodological research and teaching to bring together scholars and students from various disciplinary backgrounds. The Center's mission is to cater for interdisciplinary dialogue and to engender synergy among Finnish and international North American Studies scholars as well as representatives of the public sector, commerce, and media. We also contribute to North American Studies education, including writing and publishing workshops for doctoral students, and provide resources for the public. Our vision is to strengthen Finnish, inter-Nordic, inter-European, and trans-Atlantic research collaboration and to become the main forum in Finland to facilitate North American Studies dialogue.

Big congratulations to the JMC's brilliant Pekka M. Kolehmainen, who has been awarded a four-year Academy Research Fellow position by the Research Council of Finland for his SHADA-project.

The JMC is excited to announce the doctoral defense of our very own Mila Seppälä next Friday at the University of Turku. Mila’s dissertation, “Persisting in Paradox: Gun Violence Prevention and the Boundaries of Political Opportunity,” will be examined by Professor Laura Browder of the University of Richmond. Professor Benita Heiskanen will serve as custos.

The defense will take place on Friday, June 12 at 12 noon in the Publicum Building, Lecture Hall Pub 3.

A warm welcome to all friends of the JMC to join the event and to congratulate Mila on her important day!

Torstaina 23.4. JMC:n tutkijatohtori Pekka Kolehmainen oli mukana puhumassa Yhdysvaltain nykytilanteesta ja yhteiskunnan tulevaisuuden näkymistä Turun Kaupunginteatterin ja Turun yliopiston järjestämässä "Tieteen lava: Onko tuho tiemme uuteen?"-tapahtumassa.

Puheenvuoroissa käsiteltiin mm. Trumpin toisen presidenttikauden näkymiä, tämän hetken globaaleja kriisejä sekä ilmaston nykytilaa.

Kiitokset kaikille tilaisuuteen osallistuneille ja puhujille.
