The Donna Dillon Manning School of Global Affairs recently held the inaugural session of their “Meet the Expert” series.

This series of informal working lunches provides MAIR students the opportunity to learn from and exchange ideas with prominent scholars and practitioners of international relations. The first guest speaker was David Coombes. 

David Coombes is a former ACM professor who served as the Chief Technical Officer for Democratic Governance, Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). He was also an expert consultant Secretariat to the Council for Good Governance , Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic.

“We took the tram up into the mountains before hiking down through layers of history, learning the stories behind the monoliths L’Elefant, with its tremendous trunk, La Mómia, and El G*t.
 
We learned how parts of the mountain were affected by a human-caused fire, and how wild mountain goats now help the landscape recover by feeding on the damaged vegetation and allowing new growth to emerge naturally.
 
One of my favorite moments was seeing the statue of Saint Francis, his arms gently cradled and gathering the rain. We were told that same rain would later become water for the animals of the mountain.
 
At the bottom, we entered the Basílica de Montserrat, home of the Black Madonna, and were welcomed by the voices of the young boys’ choir.
 
The trip was a perfect combination of mountains, history, and the quiet ways humans and nature continue to shape one another.”
