Transart Institute Low-Residency PhD, MFA & Academy courses in Creative Research
est. 2004

Transart Institute for Creative Research offers international low-residency MFA and practice-based PhD programs for working artists in a highly individualized format. Transart has been on the forefront of low-residency, interdisciplinary, international creative research programs since 2004. Developed and run entirely by artists, the Institute offers several practice-based curricula: PhD, MFA and Academy courses, generating space for experimentation and thinking in any form. We champion self-directed, curious, flexible and socially engaged creative research working independently and/or collectively.

Transart Institute is seeking creative researchers to join our transdisciplinary research constellations, including Materialism & Ecological Praxis, Algorithmic & Generative Media, Somatics & Corporeality, Sonic Landscapes, Critical Urbanism & Spatial Praxis, Historiography & Speculative Futures, Radical Pedagogy & Institutional Praxis, Making Public, Crafting Media, Interfaces & Technologies, and Life Studies.

Our degrees are now offered entirely online, with a warm invitation to our in-person Nexus Events: Berlin in spring, including Documenta 16, and a symposium and extended walkshop in London in the fall.

Our PhD is offered in an optionally accelerated or extended model in which you undertake a substantial public-facing project, engaging your creative praxis with the doctoral research process. You’ll receive bespoke mentorship from Transart’s extensive faculty network, and, unlike other programmes, you can invite external experts to join your advisory team.

Monthly advisor and peer research group meetings and guest faculty-led Intensives keep you connected throughout, and you remain part of our ever-expanding community of researchers long after you finish.

Coming later this year: a new MRes in Creative Praxis (pending validation), plus a “by portfolio/publication” PhD route in exceptional cases.

This speculative question shapes the methodologies and practices developed by in her solo exhibition ‘Marismas de Mareas Olvidadas Forgotten Tidal Mudflats’ at

Join andrea for a closing performance ‘UNTITLED (PROCESSION)’ on Thursday April 3, 5:30 PM, with Muyassar Kurdi, On Ka’a Davis, Theo Armstrong/Luxury Bones, and Tidal Mudflats

Now dry in the space, the mud carries the memory of its past wetness, shaped by intertidal plants and sediments. The installation asks us to reflect on who shares the edges and what it means to heal without erasing. How do we engage with mudflats, long deemed polluted and dangerous due to environmental abuse?

Join us this weekend for the two upcoming public talks:

Fleeting Space, Gyungju Chyon
Saturday 29 March from 22:00-22:30 UTC

The Fleeting Space workshop focuses on shifting, fleeting atmospheric phenomena. Working with atmospheric elements such as light reflection, refraction, shadow, air movement, heat, sound, and smell. For the public talk Gyungju Chyon will share her practice-based research focused on heightening the ephemeral, sensorial relationship between materials and environmental elements such as light and air.

Art Got Me Here, with Perri Lynch Howard
Sunday 30 March from 13:00-14:00 UTC

Perri Lynch Howard will share her trajectory as an artist, tips and tricks for successfully operating an art business, and "workshop" some questions from participants. Howard is an artist dedicated to forging new narratives from the front lines of climate change. Working in the context of extreme environments is an essential aspect of Howard’s practice, driving her curiosity to seek a deeper sense of place, beyond the dichotomy of near and far.
