This conference explores the dissemination of large-scale land maps in France and the Habsburg Monarchy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, contributing to the development of “mapping literacy.”
It examines how maps became commonplace tools beyond expert circles, marking a significant cognitive and cultural shift in spatial representation.
It also demonstrates how professional surveying methods and graphic techniques shaped, disseminated, and occasionally undermined “ordinary cartography.
