The GW debate team is a policy and public debate team that competes at both national and regional NDT and CEDA tournaments, as well as at special public debate events.

This June, the GW Debate and Literary Society had the pleasure of sending three debaters to Paris to compete in the Transatlantic Dialogues Championship, held at the École Militaire.
Avalon, Faith, and Ritsika were tasked with proposing realistic policy recommendations to be presented at NATO’s Ankara Summit, with a specific focus on deterring Russian aggression, combating rising Chinese influence, restoring alliance cohesion, and maintaining democratic legitimacy.

We are proud to share that our team placed 3rd overall, with two team members receiving speaking awards—including Avalon, who was named the tournament’s top speaker in 1st place. Well deserved!

As finalists, our team had the opportunity to present their recommendations the following day to senior officials at the French Ministry of Defense—perfect timing, as they were in the midst of preparations for the Ankara Summit.

Many thanks to Emilie Cleret and the officers and interns at the École de Guerre who made this event possible, and congratulations to our debaters for all of their hard work. Another successful school year in the books!

In April, our team competed at the Sierra Sustainability Summit, a debate competition focused on crafting policy proposals that protect national parks and the environment.

Ady and Avalon tackled the topic: “How can public land management agencies and professionals best adapt to government budget cuts while balancing the dual missions of ensuring conservation and expanding access to these lands for all?”

Their policy recommended a collaboration between private insurance companies and states to fund natural disaster prevention and relief. Coming in second, the team had a wonderful time at the tournament and have recently finalized their proposal for publication! Thank you to CalPoly for hosting, and congratulations to MSU Denver for winning the event!

This year, our team was thrilled to compete in the EU in the U.S. EEAS Schuman Challenge, a national foreign affairs competition hosted by the EU Delegation to the United States.

Ady, Avalon, Scott, and Faith were tasked with developing and defending a comprehensive policy proposal addressing one of the key challenges facing the transatlantic alliance today. Their proposed Critical Minerals Action Plan, which leveraged innovative strategies to reduce reliance on Chinese supply chains, earned the team a spot in the semifinal round at the EU Delegation in DC.

The competition provided an incredible opportunity to dive deeply into a complex policy issue, connect with motivated students from across the country, and engage with leading foreign policy professionals. Congratulations to our team on this outstanding achievement!

GW Debate is off to a strong start this spring semester. Congratulations to Avalon, Faith, and Ady on earning first place at the Transatlantic Dialogues hosted by USAFA Forensics in Colorado Springs.

The team presented on several of the most pressing emerging threats facing the Transatlantic Alliance.

We are especially grateful to the officers from École de guerre for their mentorship and engagement throughout the program. In the spirit of America’s 250th anniversary, we had the opportunity to listen to a thoughtful and informational presentation by École de Guerre officers on the role of the French in the American Revolution.

While in Colorado Springs, we had the privilege of staying with a view of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Thank you to the U.S. Air Force Academy for hosting a fantastic tournament that set a strong start to the 2026 Transatlantic Dialogues for Future Leaders series. Raise High!

Last weekend, the GW Debate & Literary Society kicked off our season at the Ronald Reagan Debate Series at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. The Ronald Reagan Debate Series draws inspiration from the golden age of presidential debates, emphasizing the communication skills that truly matter. Students discussed whether “The abolition of the U.S. Department of Education would be a beneficial policy for higher education.” Before competing, we participated in engaging group simulations to understand the role of stakeholders in national security situations. We also listened to insights from guest speakers at the library.

Congratulations to Ritsika for placing 3rd and Scott for placing 7th. Also, congratulations to University of Miami Debate Team for winning the tournament.

Next weekend, the GW Debate & Literary Society will be participating in an online exhibition debate with the University of Dar es Salaam. In this debate, we will be discussing the current Social Justice Debates topic: “Resolved: To achieve housing justice, the United States should focus on the root causes of homelessness rather than focusing on providing immediate permanent housing and supportive services.”
GW will be on the affirmation and is represented by Avalon, Ishan, and Ritsika and UDSM will be the opposition and is represented Khadija, Careen, and Rogathe.

GWDebate had a great start to their year this past weekend! We attended the Social Justice Debates Season Opener hosted at Rutgers University’s Newark Campus.

This year, SJD debaters are discussing the topic: “Resolved: To achieve housing justice, the United States should focus on the root causes of homelessness rather than focusing on providing immediate permanent housing and supportive services.” The topic focused on the works of Ronald Sundstrom, a professor at the University of San Francisco, and his book Just Shelter: Gentrification, Integration, Race, and Reconstruction.

Congratulations to the University of Vermont for winning open finals and to Morehouse College for winning novice finals! Congrats to Nicole and Ishan for advancing to novice finals and congrats to Maya (6), Ishan (9), and Ritsika (Novice 3) for winning speaker awards! Two weeks ago, the GW Debate & Literary Society travelled to Paris, France to participate in the Transatlantic Dialogues Championship hosted at École Militaire! Our team participated in three ‘present and defend’ rounds to answer the question “What are the most effective approaches for militaries in Western liberal democracies to recruit individuals to counter emerging forms of warfare?” Congratulations to Patrick Henry College and the U.S. Air Force Academy for advancing to finals and congratulations to Marielle (1) and Vee (3) for both receiving speaker awards!
Before the tournament, École Militaire took us on an amazing walking tour around Paris to see sites with historical ties to diversity, equity, and inclusion. On this experience, we were able to see some fabulous locations including Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, the Panthéon, the Luxembourg Gardens, and Le Caveau de la Huchette. That evening, École Militaire graciously hosted us at a Gala held at the Circle de l’Union Interalliée where we had the opportunity to celebrate the École de Guerre graduation!
Special thanks to Emilie Cleret for hosting the tournament and making this opportunity possible and thank you to all the officers and interns from École Militaire that helped us throughout the week!

Two weekends ago, the GW Debate & Literary Society had the opportunity to host the Transatlantic Dialogues Spring Championship, where teams presented six minute policy proposals to answer the question, “How, if at all, should Western Liberal Democracies prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion to enhance unit cohesion and military readiness?”
Congratulations to Marielle, Vee, and Maya for making it to the final round and congrats to Vee for getting 3rd place speaker and to Avalon for being top speaker of the tournament!! Also, congratulations to Gallaudet for winning the tournament!
Thank you to everyone for attending, and we are excited to see everyone next month at the Championship event at École de Guerre in Paris!!

Last Thursday and Friday, GW Debate & Literary Society presented a policy proposal at the 2024 hosted by The European Union Delegation to the United States! The Schuman Challenge is an annual academic competition for undergraduate students from US colleges and universities to engage in rigorous dialogue on Transatlantic issues. This year’s Schuman Challenge topic was, “How can the EU and the U.S. more effectively engage the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region on areas of shared priorities and common interest?”

Debaters Vee, Zahaan, and Caleb presented a joint EU-US policy proposal addressing the lack cyber security in Latin America and the Caribbean and the ways in which the US and EU would be able to assist on this common interest. Our proposal provided a grant education program and assistance in implementing Europe’s GDPR legislation to the region. We had the opportunity to receive feedback from EU Delegates, giving us valuable insights on this topic.

Attending the Schuman Challenge and hearing the amazing ideas from students from 29 schools across 18 states gave us the opportunity to discuss the best way to enhance US-EU relations in the LAC region. The event culminated with speeches by EU ambassadors and delegation including US-EU Ambassador Jovita Neliupšienė.

Thank you to the EU Delegation for hosting this wonderful event. Congratulations to American University, the University of Utah, and Stanford University for winning the top 3 places. Great work team! Raise High!
