AUPS and Aberdeen Obs & Gynae in collaboration with Down’s Syndrome Scotland are bringing you an Education Evening about Down’s Syndrome. In hopes to raise awareness about the condition and the effects it has on families, we will be joined by parents, kind enough to share their experiences and journeys.

For Sexual Sunday we are moving on from possible STIs and on to contraceptive options to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

We will start off with the combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP)!

The combination of ethynyl estradiol and progestogen (synthetic progesterone) inhibits a woman from ovulating.

It is now recommend that pill have their packets run back-to-back or have a pill-free ‘period’ for a few days instead of a week. An advantage of running the pills packets back-to-back is that if a couple days are missed then it can be used as the break.

Side effects are:
- Breast tenderness
- Nausea
- Headache
- Irregular bleeding in first 3 months

Absolute contraindications for the COCP (i.e. UKMEC 4 conditions) are:
- >35 years old and >15 cigarettes/day
- BMI>35
- Migraine with aura
- History of VTE or thrombogenic mutation
- History of stroke or ischemic heart disease
- Breast feeding

Another common STI to look at on Sexual Sunday is Trichomonas vaginalis.

10-30% of infected women are symptomatic with profuse, thin, greenish vaginal discharge which can mimic BV. But in the case of trichomonas women report soreness which can also be in the form of dyspareunia and dysuria.

You can do a PCR vaginal swab as well as point of care microscopy. On microscopy trichomoniasis has its characteristic flagellum as a protozoan parasite.

Treatment involves metronidazole 200mg x3 times a day for 7 days. As with all metronidazole prescriptions remember alcohol should be avoided.

Men are asymptotic and are not investigated since their urine test is not validated. However male partners should be treated due to the risk of reinfecting their partner and their long-term health outcomes.
