We're delighted to share that MSc Information and Library Studies has been successfully reaccredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) following a recent reaccreditation event.

The feedback was positive and the panel praised the team's expertise, the student experience, the excellent coverage of course criteria, and the effectiveness of the work-integrated project module.

While successful reaccreditation can sometimes appear straightforward from the outside, maintaining a high-quality programme requires significant dedication and ongoing effort. Preparing the evidence, documentation and case for reaccreditation is also a major undertaking. A huge congratulations to the team on this fantastic achievement, and thank you for all your hard work and commitment!

Applications are now open – ACUNS Annual Workshop 2027 📥

Delighted to share the Call for Applications for the 2027 Academic Council on the United Nations System Annual Workshop on Institutions, Justice, and Peace, which will be hosted by the School of Law and Social Sciences and CLaRION at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland, from 31 May to 4 June 2027.

Under the theme:
“Bridging Policy and Practice: Building Strong Institutions for Inclusive Justice and Sustainable Peace”

The workshop will bring together early-career scholars, including faculty, doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, alongside mid level professionals from the United Nations System and other international and regional organisations.

Uche Iloka from the School of Law and Social Sciences will be serving as Workshop Co-Director, alongside Dr Sandra Tombe, Executive Director of the Academic Council on the United Nations System.

The workshop will provide a space for sustained dialogue between scholarship and practice, bringing together different perspectives on how stronger institutions, inclusive approaches to justice and effective policy can contribute to sustainable peace.

For colleagues working across international organisations, law, governance, justice, peace and conflict studies, international relations and related fields, we warmly encourage you to consider applying and to share the opportunity with others who may be interested.

Building International Partnerships 🌍

Rebecca Marchant-Cox and Gerry McGee attended the Civic Reception at Aberdeen Town House on 6th September, where they met with our international partners from Lapin yliopisto I University of Lapland and Inholland University of Applied Sciences.

The reception provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen international connections and explore future collaboration between our institutions. The delegates were visiting Robert Gordon University as part of the EAIE European Association for International Education Conference 2026 in Glasgow, one of Europe's leading events for international higher education professionals.

We look forward to developing these partnerships further and creating new opportunities for collaboration, student engagement, and knowledge exchange.

RGU Launches Centre for Legal Rights, Social Justice and Inclusion

Robert Gordon University's new Centre for Legal Rights, Social Justice and Inclusion (CLaRION) was officially launched on Friday at Aberdeen Town House. Led by Co-Directors Dr Sarah Sivers and Dr Uche Iloka from the School of Law and Social Sciences, CLaRION brings together expertise from law, sociology, psychology and social work to help bridge the gap between rights recognised in law and rights experienced in everyday life.

Through research, collaboration and engagement with communities, charities, legal professionals and policymakers, the Centre will work to improve access to justice, tackle inequality and translate research into real-world impact.

We were also delighted to welcome Aidan O'Neill KC, recently named Lawyer of the Year, who was delivering the keynote address.

This in-person seminar and panel discussion will explore the role of construction expertise throughout the project lifecycle and its contribution to both dispute prevention and dispute resolution.

The event will feature a keynote presentation by Dr Andrey Kotelnikov, followed by a panel discussion with leading construction and dispute resolution practitioners and construction expert witnesses.

The panel brings together leading specialists in construction, infrastructure, arbitration, expert evidence and dispute resolution, offering both legal and technical perspectives on the challenges faced by modern projects.

Akeem Babatunde is a Social Work PhD student in the School of Law and Social Sciences who presented at The Joint Conference on Social Work, Education and Social Development 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya, in June 2026. He presented his research, titled “Navigating Barriers: Examining the Challenges Faced by Social Workers in Addressing the Social Needs of Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children and Young People in Scotland."

Congratulations to Akeem on presenting his research at this international conference and on sharing this important work with a global audience. 👏

Chosen out of more than 200 speaker applications, Dr David Smith from the School of Law and Social Sciences is one of the first three TEDxAberdeen speakers to be announced!

David will take to the stage at Aberdeen Arts Centre on 24th October as part of this year's TEDxAberdeen event.

While the details of his talk remain under wraps for now, David has hinted that those familiar with his research area may already have an idea of the topic. Celebrating Paul and Sarah Arnell 💜

Recently, colleagues from the School of Law and Social Sciences came together to celebrate the retirements of Professor Paul Arnell and Sarah Arnell, marking the end of two remarkable careers at Robert Gordon University.

After 24 years at RGU, Professor Arnell has made a significant contribution through the School of Public Administration and Law, the Law School, and most recently the School of Law and Social Sciences. We were also delighted to celebrate Sarah Arnell, who is retiring after more than 16 years of service at RGU through the Law School and the School of Law and Social Sciences.

The celebration provided a wonderful opportunity to reflect on their achievements, share fond memories, and thank them both for their outstanding contributions. We wish Paul and Sarah a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement and every success in this exciting new chapter. 👏
