“If you’re thinking about changing direction, go for it.”

After changing career plans and spending a year working on a farm, Anna Craig is preparing to take her next step in the industry.

Anna grew up on her family’s mixed farm near Peterhead but initially started studying nursing. During COVID, she realised it wasn’t the career for her and decided to follow her passion for agriculture instead.

Anna said: “I started studying nursing, but during COVID I realised it wasn't the career for me. I left and spent a year working on a farm in Ayrshire, and that's when I knew agriculture was the industry I wanted to be part of.”

Now Anna is heading to New Zealand to gain experience working on farms overseas before returning to Scotland to build her career in agriculture.

If you're thinking about changing direction, developing your skills or starting a career in agriculture, find out more about studying at SRUC 👉 https://buff.ly/iGk1EIk

Agriculture students from our Barony, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen came together at the Aberdeen campus to meet one another and work alongside their new colleagues on projects in Agriculture Communications and Climate Change Solutions. This is 1 of 3 scheduled residentials this year where new relationships are made to hopefully last a lifetime.

Study Weekends form a key part of our Wildlife and Conservation Management MSc programme. Students gathered in central Scotland to visit a range of sites with varied management priorities. These ranged from a local nature reserve on former industrial land, via a country park and a lowland raised bog with adjacent mine spoil heap to vast semi-natural woodland restoration site in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.

Along the way, they discussed and appraised varying approaches to visitor management, explored potential applications of drones, bioacoustics and camera traps and used interlinking rods to measure peat depth ( it was over 6 m!).

Many thanks to David Hill of Save the Butterflies for discussing habitat management at the wonderful Wester Moss reserve.

On Tuesday, staff and PhD students attended the Northeast Scotland Ecology Network event at the James Hutton Institute.

Third-year PhD student Laura Sharp presented her research on the impact of fire on moorland moths, while second-year PhD student Charlotte Wood presented a poster on her research on invertebrate food webs in agricultural systems.

Lecturers Helen Anderson and Sarah Marley also presented at the event. Helen presented work on puffins on Craigleith and ongoing efforts to control invasive tree mallow, while Sarah discussed the numerous projects investigating seals and dolphins taking place in and around Aberdeen.

It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our research, share ideas and connect with the wider ecology community across Northeast Scotland!

As part of the Principles of Crop Production module, our 1st year Agriculture students have been getting hands-on experience at SRUC’s field trials.

Students put their learning into practice by assessing soil health and structure, developing practical skills that are essential for understanding arable production.

Practical experience is a key part of studying Agriculture at SRUC, giving students the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills they need for a career in the industry.

And this is just one of the ways our Agriculture students get out of the classroom and into the field.

Pipe cleaners, lolly sticks and plenty of creativity! 🫁🎨

Our NC Animal Care groups made a fantastic effort crafting posters of the respiratory system, bringing their anatomy learning to life.

A big thank you to all the students for getting involved and using their imagination. Take a look at their work below! 👏🐾

On Saturday 26th September we hosted an event at Craibstone as part of Climate Week North East. The event was called ‘Cost of carbon capture: creating a wee forest on a small budget.’

The event showcased the work we have done on wee forests at Craibstone including how to plan, plant and fund the creation of wee forests for community groups. The main focus was on our trial plots in Rob’s Botany Garden that were funded by the The Tree Council in 2025.
