From online classrooms to in person connections 📚✨

We were delighted to welcome our School of Law online LLM students to campus recently, giving them the opportunity to experience Aberdeen in person and connect with fellow students and staff.

The visit began with a warm welcome from Lecturer in Commercial Law, Luci Carey, before students had the chance to chat, share experiences, and build connections with peers from across our global learning community.

⚖️ How can legal systems better recognise and protect local knowledge in global ocean governance?

A new co-edited book by Professor Abbe Brown, Professor Marcel Jaspars, and Professor Michela Massimi explores the relationship between law, science, policy, and community knowledge in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing our oceans.

Bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives from across the world, the book examines how local and Indigenous knowledge can shape more inclusive and effective approaches to ocean governance and environmental decision-making.

🚀 The future of AI in outer space and how it's governed is the focus of a major new international research project led by the University of Aberdeen School of Law.

Dr Maria Manoli has been awarded almost £300,000 from The British Academy to lead interdisciplinary research examining how artificial intelligence is governed in space, addressing critical legal, ethical, cybersecurity, and policy challenges linked to emerging AI-driven space systems.

The project brings together leading international scholars and experts from law, technology, and the social sciences to develop internationally relevant insights for policymakers, regulators and space actors.

The Death and Law: Interdisciplinary Explorations project within the School of Law is pleased to announce that it has secured a Royal Society of Edinburgh Research Collaboration Grant. Drawing on the work of over 20 academic researchers from four jurisdictions, this project will develop innovative ways of combining traditional legal scholarship with insights from a wide range of other disciplines, to transform the legal understanding of death.

The RSE grant will allow the project to offer several activities for the public. This will include a monthly reading group including books studying death from the perspective of a range of disciplines. This reading group will launch as part of the School of Law’s Research Festival in May 2026 and then run monthly from October 2026 to March 2027. The project will also be running a Café Scientifique event open to the public in the Aberdeen Art Gallery in November 2026.

For more information on our public activities and how you can get involved, you can visit the Death and Law: Interdisciplinary Explorations project webpage:

Using law as a starting point, these projects draw on anthropology, theology, philosophy, medicine, museum studies and other disciplines to critically examine how society navigates human and non-human death, legacy, and the afterlife.
