The University of Aberdeen LLM Renewable Energy students visited the grid-level Donside Hydro Scheme, Aberdeen’s first community energy project and Scotland’s first urban community hydro project.

Facilitated by Patrick Morgan-Achor and hosted by Directors Jane Fullerton and Rick Vaughan, the students were able to see first-hand the operations of a small-scale renewable energy project. Hailing from multiple jurisdictions including the EU, Uganda, Nigeria, India, and Thailand, they were also able to better appreciate important issues such as the role of subsidies as well as legal and practical challenges faced by renewable energy projects.

🎓 Welcome to our new LLM students!

It was a pleasure to welcome our new September start LLM students to the School of Law at our recent welcome reception.

The event brought together new and current LLM students, academic staff and PGR students, providing a relaxed opportunity to meet one another, get to know the school community and start building connections ahead of the new academic year.

It was fantastic to see students and staff coming together, sharing experiences and beginning what we hope will be lasting connections during their time at Aberdeen.

The University of Aberdeen Centre for Energy Law (AUCEL) recently welcomed a visiting delegation from Japan for a Research Exchange exploring energy law, renewable energy governance and environmental protection in Scotland and Japan.

The interdisciplinary discussions brought together expertise across law, policy, economics, agriculture and engineering, highlighting the value of international collaboration in addressing shared energy challenges.

Building on more than 20 years of engagement with Japanese law scholars, the exchange created new opportunities for research and knowledge sharing.

🌎 From Aberdeen to São Paulo: exploring the future of regulation

Three of our PhD students recently travelled to Brazil to explore the future of regulatory governance, share their research and connect with fellow researchers from around the world.

From climate law and conscientious objection in medicine to regulation and compliance, their experiences in São Paulo are helping to shape and strengthen their doctoral research back in Aberdeen.

The Death & Law: Interdisciplinary Explorations project at the School of Law has recently completed a series of three workshops with the generous support of a Royal Society of Edinburgh Research Collaboration Grant.

Using law as a starting point, these workshops drew on a range of disciplines to critically examine how society navigates death, legacy, and the afterlife.

Project members were pleased to welcome contributors from institutions across Scotland, the UK and abroad. The workshops have provided an opportunity to strengthen the scholarly networks between academics with similar research interests across different jurisdictions. They will also support the publication of an upcoming edited volume which brings together legal scholarship with death studies.

What happens to our dignity after death? Can the dead be harmed? How is technology changing the way we grieve?

We're excited to launch the Conversations on Death Book Club, a free monthly series exploring questions about death, memory, grief, identity, and law through books, poetry, non-fiction, and film.

Hosted as part of the Death & Law Interdisciplinary Explorations, with generous support from the Royal Society of Edinburgh and in partnership with Aberdeen City Libraries, these sessions are open to everyone. No specialist knowledge is required, and you are welcome whether or not you have read the book or watched the film. Join us for a single session or the full series, and bring your own perspective to the conversation.
