FdSc first-year Horticulture students visited An Creagán, where they met with CAFRE Graduate Michéal Scullion and Stephanie Clokey from Ulster Farmers' Union. They were informed about peatland restoration efforts in collaboration with Ulster Wildlife in the Sperrins. The students assisted in installing a plastic pile dam and visited Haughey's Bog, observing restoration plans and new peat dams. This experience reinforced the importance of peat-free growing media in horticulture, complementing their studies.

Exploring Lough Neagh Fishermen’s Co-operative 🎣
Level 3 Food Technology and Nutrition students had an excellent experience visiting Lough Neagh Fishermen's Co-operative, where they delved into the world of fish processing!
Students learnt about the traditional techniques and practices employed to ensure the highest quality products are produced sustainably. One of the highlights of the tour was the tasting experience, where students sampled some of the eels prepared on-site.
A huge thank you to Kathleen McBride (CEO) and Ciaran Kelly (Quality Manager) for their warm welcome and for sharing their expertise with CAFRE Food students.
Greenmount Campus Agriculture Level 2 and Level 3 students enjoyed a day at the Royal Ulster Premier Beef & Lamb Championships. Great to see current and former students participating.
Our Level 3 Food students enjoyed a practical session learning about ice cream manufacture. From weighing, checking, blending, analysing, pasteurising, freezing, depositing and packing a tasty treat was created.
Level 2 Equine Care students recently visited Ballyward Equestrian and TRI Equestrian. The day began with a tour of the stunning facilities at Ballyward, where students gained valuable insights into equestrian management, care, and operations.
Thank-you to Mr. McConville, owner of Ballyward Equestrian, and Shane O’Reilly, a Rider at the facility, for hosting our visit. Students also had the chance to meet former student Rachel O’Hare, who is employed at Ballyward after a successful work placement.
Next, the group headed to TRI Equestrian, where they explored a diverse selection of high-quality equestrian gear and essentials. Thanks to Gareth McComb, Manager and former Level 2 Apprentice Sarah Orr, who is now working at TRI Equestrian for hosting our visit.
This experience provided our students with an excellent opportunity to enhance their knowledge and fuel their enthusiasm for a career in the equine industry.
In this International Stress Awareness Week (4-8 November) we spotlight the activities Level 3 Veterinary Nursing students participated in during a recent self-care day. As part of their curriculum learners are required to explain the importance of health and wellbeing and recognise methods and strategies of self-care for the Veterinary Nurse professional.
What could be more enjoyable than spending time with Millstream Alpacas, reaping the rewards of tactile therapy, before heading over to Laurel View Equestrian for goat yoga, pony pampering, and a delightful animal antics experience? A big thank you to Tiny House Coffee for providing the sweet treats!
