Bangor's Prof Christian Dunn introduces the idea of a 'welly belt' to protect land from flooding. Wetlands also provide great wildife habitats, store water and carbon. “I’d like to see something like a ‘welly belt’ principle introduced into planning. If a patch of land is identified as a wetland – so you’d need a pair of wellies to cross it – our first response shouldn’t be to drain it, fill it in and build on it, it should be to maximise the protection it is given.” Genius! Rhaeadr Fawr (Aber Falls) is a spectacular waterfall not far from Bangor. Here, the water plunges 37m and forms a series of clear deep pools beneath. Welsh princes held court here in the 1200s and signs of a bronze age settlement are still visible. Did you know that Bangor University own the land (and sheep) where the path circles up to the falls! At this years , Bangor University launched a new Forestry Alumni Association group at the ConFor (Confederation for Foresters) stand. There was a great turn out and the group looks set to be a huge success for networking and social events in the future. We've been teaching forestry for over 120 years so theres a lot of you!
