Today’s inspirational woman: Mamie Phipps Clark ✨✨✨

Mamie Phipps Clark was a psychologist and important figure in the civil rights movement. She was the first black woman to earn a psychology doctorate at Columbia University (1943).
Mamie and her husband Kenneth Clark became famous for their research on racial identity and self-esteem.
Having experienced segregation first hand they decided to conduct experiments which showed how detrimental segregation was for young children.
They presented two dolls to the children, a white one and a black one, and asked the children several questions about them. The results showed that the majority of the black children preferred the white doll and that they associated the black doll with being “bad”.

Mamie and Kenneth’s research played an important role in convincing the Supreme Court to strike down segregation in schools in 1954.
