Keeping children motivated during 11+ preparation isn’t just about top scores, it’s about effort, perseverance and progress.

At SDE, we build this into everything we do, from our 100% Club to our weekly Star Student, where teachers celebrate pupils who have worked hard, tackled challenges or simply given their best.

SDE's Tutor Monica shares how we keep pupils motivated throughout their 11+ journey.

Because progress deserves recognition too.

Reading School and the Gloucestershire Grammar School Consortium have announced plans to move their 11+ entrance tests from September to July.

This change currently applies only to these schools and does not affect the admissions arrangements used by most grammar schools.

The schools involved have cited reasons including reducing summer revision pressures and completing the testing process before the summer holidays.

As always, admissions arrangements vary between schools, so it is important to check the latest information directly from those on your shortlist.

Have any of your chosen schools announced changes to their admissions process?

Strong foundations are essential in 11+ Maths. Beginning with core topics such as number and place value, and building understanding through regular practice, can support steady progress over time.

Simple habits such as daily Maths review, developing mental maths techniques, setting time goals, and celebrating progress can help children build both confidence and understanding.

How can you support your child through the 11+ journey?

For many children, 11+ preparation is a new and unfamiliar experience.

It is not always easy, and that is completely natural.

What helps most is feeling supported.

✔️ A calm and consistent routine
✔️ Reassurance when things feel difficult
✔️ Encouragement to keep going

Over time, this helps children build confidence, resilience and independence.

At SDE, we believe the 11+ journey is about more than the test. It is about helping each child feel capable, supported and ready for what comes next.
