This is a closeup of a chicken's o***y. The size is about 1 inch across. At birth, a chicken o***y contains about 4000 ova. Each o**m has the potential to become the yolk of an egg. But a hen may only lay 800 eggs in her lifetime. This o***y came out of an old hen that wasn't laying eggs anymore, and you can see there are many ova left.

Chickens have two ovaries, but only one is ever functional (the left one). It is located at about the center of the backbone. In a laying hen, an o**m develops to become a full size yolk. Once it breaks away from the o***y, it travels down the oviduct where it is covered in albumen (the white), membranes, and shell. This journey takes 24-26 hours before being pushed out.

Friday 2-4pm - OUR FIRST DISSECTION!!!! We've made the trip to a farm the other week to collect our birds and have a selection of ex-layers and possibly some broilers ready for our fellow avianists to dissect (only if a place has been confirmed by email). There should be enough for one bird each! Please remember your dissection kits and lab coats. We hope to run another of these events very soon for everyone that never managed to get a slot and anyone else interested!
