From learning English from scratch to GCSE maths success 🎓

Four students at Bedford College, part of The Bedford College Group, have successfully achieved their GCSE maths after arriving in the UK as refugees or asylum seekers and beginning their studies at entry level.

Faisal Abdallah, who fled Sudan, achieved a grade 4, alongside fellow ESOL for Maths (16-18) students Ha Nhat Tran (grade 4), Khan-Ly Nguyen (grade 5) and Nam Nguyen (grade 5).

All four began at entry level following their initial assessment before progressing through Level 1 and Level 2 Functional Skills and ultimately reaching GCSE standard.

Their achievement is particularly significant as they were learning a demanding new curriculum in an unfamiliar language while also adjusting to life in a new country.

A fantastic achievement for Faisal, Ha Nhat, Khan-Ly and Nam. 👏

Investing in our maths teams through our partnership with MEI

We were pleased to welcome Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) to Bedford College for another professional development session with our maths teaching teams.

The Bedford College Group is proud to be one of just 10 partnership colleges with MEI across the country, supporting closer collaboration between education and industry to strengthen mathematics teaching and learning.

This was MEI’s third visit to the Group since our partnership began, with colleagues from Bedford College joined by maths staff from across The Bedford College Group.

We’re looking forward to welcoming SDC Builders Ltd to our Freshers’ Fair at The Bedford Sixth Form and Bedford College this September.

📍 The Bedford Sixth Form - Thursday 10 September
📍 Bedford College - Thursday 17 September

Students will have the opportunity to meet the team, hear about real career journeys and explore the wide range of opportunities available within the construction industry, including apprenticeships and placements.

SDC will also be representing BuildHer Ambition, helping to inspire more young women to consider the exciting range of careers available across the industry.

Construction offers so much more than many people realise, with opportunities across trades, project management, design, engineering, business and much more.

A day of teamwork, problem-solving and a little friendly competition! ⛳🧩

A little throwback to our Maths team-building day, where colleagues took part in a mystery tour around Bedford, following clues that eventually led them to their lunch destination.

The afternoon brought even more friendly competition, with the team taking on a round of Bedford-themed crazy golf! 🏌️

A great opportunity for the team to step away from the day-to-day, have some fun and spend time together outside the classroom.

We are incredibly proud of Daniel Hulatt, Programme Manager in Computing at Bedford College on his remarkable achievement in completing his personal challenge to walk the Great Wall of China. 🇨🇳👏

The challenge was more than just a physical journey. It was something Daniel had hoped to achieve for 23 years and, having faced significant challenges with his health along the way, completing the trek made the achievement even more meaningful.

Inspired by his family's own experiences and the support they have received from Great Ormond Street Hospital, Daniel took on the challenge to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

Thanks to the generosity, encouragement and support of so many people, Daniel has raised an incredible £4,489. 👏

Congratulations, Daniel, on an incredible personal achievement and for raising such a fantastic amount for such an important cause. We’re proud to celebrate your journey and everyone who supported you along the way.
