Turning years of industry experience into a new career direction, MSc Business Analytics graduate Simon Carberry chose postgraduate study at Queen’s Business School to build the technical skills needed to make the move into analytics.

After working in sales and account management within the sporting goods industry, Simon wanted to build on the analytical side of his previous roles by developing skills in programming, statistics and data-driven decision-making.

“I had some early apprehension about being a mature student and tackling computer programming, but I’ve really enjoyed it. A year ago I hadn’t even opened R programming, and I've now just recently spent three months working with it intensively on my dissertation. Over the past year I’ve developed skills in R, SQL and machine learning, and now feel more confident and credible when positioning myself for roles in this field.”

One of Simon’s highlights was the opportunity to combine his interest in sport with his growing analytical skillset through his dissertation, working with real-world, elite-level football data.

“Collecting and modelling real-world data was a valuable experience that helped me understand football data structures, their challenges and the analytical techniques best suited to them. While sports analytics is an area I’m passionate about, the skills I developed are highly transferable to other contexts.”

As Simon looks towards a career in analytics, he leaves Queen’s with a combination of industry experience and new technical skills that he hopes to continue developing in his future roles.

Congratulations, Simon, and best of luck with the next step in your career!

Meet Takaaki Suzuki, an MSc International Business student who spent a semester studying abroad at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland.

“I chose the University of Jyväskylä to explore subjects beyond my usual studies, particularly entrepreneurship and finance. It turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my degree. The experience significantly broadened my perspective.

Living and studying in Finland was an unforgettable experience. It helped me grow both academically and personally. The academic experience was challenging, with some modules requiring weekly essays and learning diaries. Balancing coursework with travelling across Finland also pushed me to develop valuable skills in time management, academic writing and adaptability.

Beyond the classroom, I embraced student life through events organised by the University and the Erasmus Student Network (ESN), including skiing, international food events and trips across Northern Europe. One of the most memorable experiences was travelling independently to Lapland and witnessing the breathtaking Northern Lights, which was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen and really broadened my horizons.”

Takaaki’s semester abroad demonstrates how international study can offer much more than academic development. It can build confidence, challenge perspectives, create lifelong friendships and develop the ability to thrive in unfamiliar environments.

From Malaysia to Belfast, Ru Xeen Tee’s journey at Queen’s has given her the opportunity to build on her accounting background, develop new skills and explore the world of data and analytics.

After completing her BSc Accounting at Queen’s, Ru Xeen chose to continue her studies here, drawn by the supportive community and strong academic environment.

“I realised how essential coding and data analysis skills have become in today’s data-driven world. This course allows me to bridge my accounting background with technical knowledge in programming, data management and machine learning. It combines business understanding with practical, hands-on tools like R, Python and Tableau, which are highly valuable in modern decision-making.”

Ru Xeen’s experience at Queen’s extended far beyond the classroom:

Taking part in the ‘Splash Project’ gave me the chance to contribute to the local community, and joining the Queen’s Student Managed Fund helped me apply my analytical thinking in a real financial context. Another unforgettable experience was participating in the ‘Data for a Good Datathon’, where I worked with a team to develop data-driven solutions for challenges in Northern Ireland’s healthcare system. It was inspiring to collaborate with mentors from leading firms like EY, PwC, Kainos and FinTrU, and to see how analytics can create real social impact.”

Looking ahead, Ru Xeen hopes to pursue a career in consulting or analytics, combining her accounting background with the data-driven skills she has developed at Queen’s.

What happens when you take your MSc International Business studies beyond the classroom and into another country?

For Sadie Towell, it meant four months studying at emlyon business school in Lyon, France, an experience that broadened her academic perspective, built international friendships and gave her the opportunity to experience French business culture first-hand.

“It was a fantastic experience, and I learnt so much, both at the university and in my everyday life. At emlyon, I experienced opportunities to engage with real-world businesses through various modules, including Branding and Retail Management, which introduced me to new perspectives on business, while guest speakers from local companies brought learning to life.”

Beyond her studies, Sadie embraced life in Lyon. She took weekly French lessons, built friendships with students from around the world and even worked part-time in a city centre bar, which helped her settle into a new city, meet people outside university and practise her French.

“It was great to experience learning in a different country. I had a friendship group from all around the world. I had a brilliant time and would recommend this experience to anyone interested in taking part in a study abroad exchange.”

From exploring Lyon’s student-friendly culture to adapting to a new way of learning, Sadie’s semester abroad gave her experiences and skills that extend far beyond her degree.

For recent BSc Finance graduate Eoghain O'Loughlin, his time at Queen's University provided a strong foundation for his career, combining practical experience during his placement with a range of modules that helped shape his interests and prepare him for life after graduation.

"My placement year with HNH Partners stands out as the highlight of my time at Queen's, giving me a genuine insight into the professional world. I also found the International Finance and Financial Bubbles and Crises modules genuinely interesting, while the Corporate Finance and Equity Research modules will likely prove useful as I move into my new role.

Outside the classroom, I was involved with the Queen's Student Managed Fund and served as Treasurer of the Consulting and Entrepreneurship Society, both of which gave me the chance to build skills, network with industry professionals, and hear directly from their career journeys. Above all though, it was the camaraderie of university life, the shared struggle and shared positivity through deadlines, exams and depressing weather, that I found most valuable."

Following graduation, Eoghain will return to HNH Partners as a Deal Advisory Associate in their Belfast office, building on the experience he gained during his placement year and taking the next step in his career in finance.

Congratulations, Eoghain! We wish you all the best as you take the next step in your career with HNH Partners.
