Meet BSc Business Management with Placement student Annie McCafferty. Her placement year at the William J Clinton Leadership Institute at Queen’s Business School was all about gaining practical experience and exploring different areas of marketing and programme delivery.

From contributing to the development of the PeacePLUS programme to managing a CRM system, Annie gained experience across marketing, executive education and event delivery. She also worked on email campaigns, website content, alumni engagement and live and online events, giving her the opportunity to work across a wide range of projects.

Reflecting on what she found most valuable, Annie said:

"The most rewarding part of my placement was seeing projects develop from an initial idea through to successful delivery. It was incredibly satisfying to work on programmes that had a real impact on participants and to know that my work contributed to that experience."

"My placement gave me practical experience that I couldn't have gained in the classroom. Designing marketing content, supporting on proposals for new projects and collaborating with colleagues across the Institute. It helped me develop confidence in managing projects, communicating with stakeholders and balancing multiple deadlines in a professional environment."

For BSc Finance student Barnett Amadeus Kurniawan, his placement year at Deloitte NI provided the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in audit and assurance while developing his confidence and technical skills in a professional network.

“During my placement, I worked across a range of engagements involving public-listed companies and major organisations across different industries. I gained experience in understanding and documenting accounting systems and processes, preparing process flowcharts, carrying out risk assessments and completing audit procedures across areas including revenue, expenses and assets. I also gained valuable experience communicating directly with clients and senior team members, while collaborating with Deloitte offices internationally, including teams in Spain and Chile.”

Reflecting on what he found most rewarding, Barnett said:

"At the beginning of my placement, I was mainly attending client meetings through Teams and observing how experienced colleagues communicated with clients. By the end of my placement, I had progressed to leading meetings myself and communicating directly with clients and senior team members."

Alongside his client work, Barnett also achieved first place in Deloitte Northern Ireland's Excel competition before joining the Deloitte NI Excel team, sharing Excel learning materials, shortcuts, formulas and case studies with colleagues across the office.

From initially observing client meetings to eventually leading them, Barnett's placement highlights how stepping outside your comfort zone can build confidence, develop new skills and help shape your future career.

BSc International Business with German student Owen Williams undertook his placement year with Tourism Ireland which gave him the opportunity to immerse himself in the international tourism industry, working across the DACH region and gaining hands-on experience at major industry events.

During his year, Owen helped to organise and deliver events including the CMT Caravan and Camping Travel Fair in Stuttgart, ITB Trade Fair in Berlin and IMEX Trade Fair in Frankfurt.

Owen shares the main highlights of his placement experience and how this has clarified his future career path:

“The most rewarding aspects were the opportunities that I had to collaborate with tourism professionals from both the Island of Ireland and the DACH region. Getting to promote and represent the island as a tourism region and engage with tourism professionals from different markets has provided me with valuable insights into how Ireland is perceived internationally and particularly increased my interest in international tourism and destination marketing. Overall this experience has helped me understand the type of career I would like to pursue in the future."

For BSc Business Management with Placement student Caitlin McCann, her year at PJD Safety Supplies was all about gaining real-world experience and taking on new challenges to develop new skills.

From working as a Sales Co-Ordinator supporting international customers to taking on an additional role as an E-Commerce & Web Assistant, Caitlin gained experience across different areas of the business, a role she plans to continue part-time during her final year at university.

Reflecting on what she found most valuable, Caitlin said:

"The most rewarding aspect of my placement was definitely the real-world experience I gained, and the friends I've made along the way!"

“No two days were the same across my placement year with PJD. Working alongside a close-knit team, I developed a cohesive partnership with my overseas Sales Representatives to support international customers. I effectively managed customer sales accounts. I handled a variety of sales duties including generating price quotations, managing tenders, and processing orders via email and phone.”

Her placement also helped prepare her for the next step in her career, developing her confidence and approach to problem-solving.

“My placement year has shown me how my contributions, both individually and within the team, have shaped me into a responsible and resourceful problem solver. Seeing my hard work pay off through customer satisfaction has been truly rewarding.”

With a passion for using data to solve real business challenges, Samir Bin Aamer chose to study MSc Business Analytics at Queen’s to combine business understanding with technical analytics skills.

“I wanted to develop a strong foundation in data-driven decision-making. With the rise of big data, I was keen to learn how analytical tools and techniques can drive business value and improve strategic outcomes.”

During his time at Queen’s, Samir has gained practical experience with R, Python, KNIME, Power BI and Tableau, with real-world projects being a particular highlight.

“These projects allowed me to apply what I learned in a practical setting and boosted my confidence in using tools like Power BI and machine learning techniques.”

His experience has also helped him discover where he wants to take his career next.

“The course helped me identify my strengths in data storytelling and predictive modelling, which will guide me towards a career in data-driven decision-making roles such as business intelligence or analytics consulting.”

Alongside his studies, Samir enjoyed exploring Belfast, meeting people from different backgrounds and building lasting friendships.

We’re pleased to shine a spotlight on Oindrila Mukherjee, a recent Queen’s Business School alumna, whose MSc in Business Analytics has helped shape an exciting career in data and technology.

Since graduating, Oindrila has built her career at Boots Group, where she now works as a Data Engineer. In her role, she designs and maintains data solutions across a range of teams, helping to provide reliable data that supports better business decisions.

Her experience has also enabled her to continually develop her technical expertise while tackling real-world business challenges demonstrating how the combination of business knowledge, analytical thinking and technical skills can open exciting career opportunities.

Reflecting on what she gained from her time at university, Oindrila says:

“One of the most valuable things I gained from university was the opportunity to think differently, work with people from diverse backgrounds and learn from different perspectives. It challenged me to approach problems with an open mind and develop a collaborative way of working—skills that I continue to use throughout my career.”

Oindrila’s journey highlights how postgraduate study can provide more than technical knowledge, it can develop the mindset, confidence and collaborative skills needed to make an impact in today’s data-driven business environment.

Moving from India to Belfast, Manicharan Surampally came to Queen’s looking for more than a master’s degree, he wanted new experiences and a clearer direction for his future career.

As an MSc Accounting, Finance and Analytics student, Manicharan developed a deeper understanding of the decisions behind the numbers.

“To me, accounting looks backwards and asks, ‘What happened?’ Finance asks, ‘What should we do?’ Analytics looks ahead and asks, ‘What might happen next?’ What interested me was the point where those three questions meet.”

Alongside his studies, Manicharan has embraced opportunities across Queen’s, from student events and skills programmes to becoming a Senior Analyst with the Queen’s Student Managed Fund. He also secured an opportunity with Ocorian, marking an exciting first step in his professional career.

“I came to Belfast looking for a degree. I found people from around the world, experiences I had never planned for and a clearer direction for my career. Most importantly, I came to Queen’s learning how to calculate numbers. I am leaving knowing how to question them.”

“My advice to anyone arriving at Queen’s is simple: come curious. Attend the events, ask the questions, speak to the person sitting next to you and apply for opportunities even when you are not completely sure you are ready.”

With a clearer career direction and valuable experience behind him, Manicharan is now ready to put his skills into practice and take the next step in his career. We wish him every success for the future!

Turning years of industry experience into a new career direction, MSc Business Analytics graduate Simon Carberry chose postgraduate study at Queen’s Business School to build the technical skills needed to make the move into analytics.

After working in sales and account management within the sporting goods industry, Simon wanted to build on the analytical side of his previous roles by developing skills in programming, statistics and data-driven decision-making.

“I had some early apprehension about being a mature student and tackling computer programming, but I’ve really enjoyed it. A year ago I hadn’t even opened R programming, and I've now just recently spent three months working with it intensively on my dissertation. Over the past year I’ve developed skills in R, SQL and machine learning, and now feel more confident and credible when positioning myself for roles in this field.”

One of Simon’s highlights was the opportunity to combine his interest in sport with his growing analytical skillset through his dissertation, working with real-world, elite-level football data.

“Collecting and modelling real-world data was a valuable experience that helped me understand football data structures, their challenges and the analytical techniques best suited to them. While sports analytics is an area I’m passionate about, the skills I developed are highly transferable to other contexts.”

As Simon looks towards a career in analytics, he leaves Queen’s with a combination of industry experience and new technical skills that he hopes to continue developing in his future roles.
