St. Malachy's College Founded in 1833, St Malachy’s College is a Catholic Grammar School. This page is the official page for keeping up to date with the College.

Founded in 1833, St Malachy’s College is a Catholic Grammar School for boys. We take great pride in the history of the College which was opened on St Malachy’s Day 3rd November 1833. The College began with eight boarders and ten day pupils. Today the population has grown to over 1000 pupils. The pupils, with the coat of arms of the Diocese of Down and Connor on their school badge, remain loyal to the rich tradition of the College. The aims and ethos of the College are based on partnerships. These come in many forms and their success enables the school to be all that it is. We work very closely with our link primary schools to ensure that the transition from primary to St Malachy’s College is a natural and positive experience. We make sure we keep you informed of your son’s progress on a regular basis through our strong pastoral care system. A parent can always speak to someone who knows their child. St Malachy’s has a very strong Careers Education Department which works in close partnership with a wide range of local companies to provide careers advice and guidance to pupils throughout each stage of the pupil’s education.

This afternoon, our Year 8 pupils attended our Freshers’ Fair, where they had the chance to explore the fantastic range of clubs and activities on offer here at the College!

From playing chess and acting out scenes with Drama Club to making music, playing basketball, taking part in penalty shootouts and carrying out exciting science experiments, there was something for everyone to enjoy!

A huge thank you to our KS4 and KS5 pupils, who generously gave up their time to lead the activities, share their interests and help our Year 8 pupils discover all the opportunities available to them. We’re incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and support!

It was wonderful to see our Year 8 pupils getting involved, trying new things and discovering new interests. We hope they’ve found something they can’t wait to get involved in!

Last week, we had the pleasure of celebrating our Junior Prizegiving Ceremony, recognising students who have excelled academically, consistently given their best, and made valuable contributions to College life through their involvement in a wide range of services and activities.

We were delighted to welcome past pupil and former Head Boy, Leo McGuigan, as our guest speaker. Leo addressed our prize winners, sharing words of encouragement and inspiration.

Congratulations to all our prize winners on their achievements. We are incredibly proud of your hard work, dedication and commitment to our College community - Gloria ab Intus!

On Friday, our Year 8 pupils took part in an engaging and informative Study Skills Workshop delivered by Inspire. The session was particularly valuable as the boys prepare for their first set of CAT assessments in the College. The workshop explored how the brain learns, introduced key study and revision techniques, and focused on developing strong study habits that will support learning both now and in the years ahead. Pupils were given a range of practical hints and tips to help them become more effective and confident learners. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and left with plenty of useful strategies that they can put into practice as they continue their educational journey. We would like to thank Aran from .ie for delivering such a worthwhile and beneficial session.

As we head towards the end of the first half term, our Year 13 students gathered for a special Mass in the College Chapel centred on the theme of Service in Leadership.

It was a beautiful and prayerful occasion, with students actively participating as readers, Eucharistic Ministers and members of the choir, helping to create a respectful and reflective atmosphere throughout.

We hope this will become a valued new tradition for future Year 13 cohorts.

The Mass was followed by an assembly launching our Year 13 Service Leadership Programme, which provides opportunities for students to serve others and make a positive contribution to College life.

Serving with Faith: New Eucharistic Ministers Commissioned

It is always encouraging to see so many pupils and staff gathering faithfully for Friday Morning Mass each week. A special word of thanks goes to our dedicated and outstanding Chapel Choir, whose talent, commitment and reverence enrich our liturgies and many other College occasions throughout the year.

Today's celebration was particularly special as a number of our students were commissioned as Eucharistic Ministers.

These young men will now assist Fr Spence and Deacon Dowd in the distribution of Holy Communion during College liturgies and services, taking on an important role in the faith life of our community.

We congratulate all those who were commissioned and thank them for their willingness to serve others. We look forward to them carrying out this ministry at our Whole School Celebration of the Feast of St Malachy on Friday 23 October in St Patrick's Church.

We are proud of the wide range of faith development and extracurricular opportunities available to our boys. These experiences help to nurture their talents, character, leadership and faith. We are deeply grateful to the many staff who generously give their time and commitment to inspire, support and develop our students, helping them to realise their full potential both in and beyond the classroom.

This morning, our Motor Vehicle & Road Users GCSE pupils enjoyed completing their survey of four local roads, focusing on driver compliance with speed limits. This data collection exercise forms a key component of their GCSE Controlled Assessment and provided pupils with valuable firsthand experience in gathering, recording and analysing traffic data. The activity also helped develop their understanding of road safety, research methods and the factors that influence driver behaviour on local roads.

Team and individual success in Dublin

Great team wins for the Year 9’s, Year 10’s and Inters (Yr11 & 12) highlighted an excellent days racing at the Clonliffe Schools Invitational. There were also superb individual wins for Cormac (Yr10) and Ruarrc (Inter).
Sion (Yr9) picked up a fine silver in the Minor race and was brilliantly backed up by Isaac, Kobe, Luca and Oisin in 4th, 5th, 13th and 15th places respectively. Cormac hit the front mid way through the Junior race and pushed on unchallenged for the win. James (10th), Daniel (12th) and Joshua (21st) contributed to the team success.
Thomas pushed the pace for most of the Inter race with Ruarcc the only one in the field capable of staying in touch. Over the last 500m Ruarrc launched his attack and pulled away for a narrow victory. Leo (6th), Zac (8th) and Lucas (9th) ensured a strong team win.
The Year 8’s gained valuable racing experience in their first outing in College colours!
