In June 2024, the BBC came to Catalyst and asked: 'Can Belfast build a £1bn start-up?'

Today, they effectively answered their own question.

£50m, Led by TCV - Cloudsmith has closed the largest Series C ever completed by a Northern Ireland tech company, and unicorn territory is no longer hypothetical.

Huge congratulations to Alan Carson, ☁️ Lee Skillen, Glenn Weinstein and the whole Cloudsmith team!

Cloudsmith came through our Springboard scaling programme in their early days.

Our Director of Entrepreneurship and Scaling, Fiona Bennington, spoke to BBC News NI about what this actually signals for Northern Ireland:

'This is an incredible piece of news for the people of Northern Ireland, and it should be taken as a signal for something that has fundamentally changed here. We have amazing talent, that can build globally facing companies that can create really big, impactful things... We can build these companies. We have the talent to do it. 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻.

For years, the assumption has been that entrepreneurial ambition is something you either have or you don't. New independent research from DCU Business School & DCU Institute for Business and Society challenges that directly.

Diane Reilly spent over two decades working in the NHS. She didn't consider herself an entrepreneur. She almost didn't come. Hello Possible came to her hometown of Enniskillen and it changed everything. She is now developing Endovia, a pre-consultation tool for women with endometriosis, accepted onto the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme and a finalist in the GoSucceed Big Pitch Competition.

Diane is not an exception. She is the point.

86% of Hello Possible participants left the programme wanting to start their own business. Many arrived with no entrepreneurial intention at all. Delivered across east Belfast, Magherafelt, Enniskillen and Cushendall - communities across Northern Ireland where entrepreneurship has not always felt like an option, the results are unambiguous.
