The Language Centre is offering a range of language classes in 11 languages - from Beginners to more advanced levels. Join us online or in person for 10-week courses starting Monday 5 October.

Registration opens tomorrow (10:00 am, 1 September) online only - closes at 5 pm on Thursday 1 October - register early!

China Research Forum NI Inaugurated

Last Tuesday (23 June), Northern Ireland experienced its hottest day of the year and the inaugural China Research Forum NI generated an equally vibrant atmosphere of academic exchange and discussion. Hosted at the McClay Library Auditorium, Queen's University Belfast, the Forum brought together around 30 participants to explore a diverse range of China-related topics through lively interdisciplinary dialogue.

Jointly organised by the Chinese Students' and Scholars' Associations of Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University, under the guidance of the Association of British Chinese Professors (Northern Ireland Region) and Queen's Language Centre, the Forum marked the beginning of a new student-led platform for China-related research, collaboration, and community engagement.

Celebrating Duanwu Festival at Queen’s and Beyond

Did you know that this year the Duanwu Festival (端午节, Duānwǔjié), also known as the Dragon Boat Festival (龙舟节, Lóngzhōujié) in Chinese culture, or the Dano Festival in Korean culture, falls on Friday 19 June?

To mark the occasion, two celebratory events were organised in advance of the festival: one on campus at Queen’s University Belfast and the other within the local community. Together, these events provided opportunities to explore the history, customs, and cultural significance of one of East Asia’s most cherished traditional festivals.

Join us for an insightful talk by Ningning Liu, PhD candidate in Law at Queen’s University Belfast, as she explores the evolving role of women in modern Chinese history - from the confines of the inner quarters to the emergence of political participation.

Drawing on her interdisciplinary research in feminist law, legal history, and human rights, Ningning will examine how Western ideas, Confucian traditions, and feminist movements intersected during a transformative period in China’s past.

Eid Mubarak

On Friday 20 March, students and staff at Queen’s University Belfast came together in the Blue Sky Room to mark the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.

The event was jointly organised by the One Elmwood International Student Engagement Team, the Diversity and Inclusion Unit, and the QUB iRise Staff Network, with support from the Queen’s Islamic Student Society and The Language Centre. It provided a valuable opportunity for members of the University community to come together, share food, and engage with cultural traditions in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

We would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to making the celebration such a meaningful occasion.

Happy Friday and Happy UN French Language Day!

On this special day, we invited Noé Cherel, a French student studying archaeology at Queen’s, to share his thoughts.

"For me, French is a beautiful, rich, and expressive language. It allows you to convey ideas with precision and elegance. It is also very useful when travelling throughout France. As many French people do not speak English fluently, being able to speak French offers a valuable way to connect and communicate with others. It also helps you better understand local culture and customs. That is why learning French is a true gateway to France."

As the Lantern Festival arrives (Tuesday 3 March), we bring this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations at Queen’s to a joyful close.

Over the past few weeks, colleagues, students, and community members have come together to celebrate the Year of the Horse through cultural talks, creative workshops, and online exhibitions. It’s been a wonderful celebration of Chinese heritage, connection, and shared learning.

A big thank you to all our facilitators, volunteers, participants, and supporters who made it such a success. We look forward to celebrating with you again next year!
