QUB School of Law The School of Law at Queen's, part of the Russell Group, is a leading UK Law School.

There are over 1,000 undergraduate students enrolled in the School, 320 postgraduates, 30 PhD students and almost 50 members of academic staff. At undergraduate level there are courses in law with languages, and law with politics, as well as the LLB degree. At postgraduate level specialised courses on criminology, governance and human rights are available. The School is developing joint programmes with other universities in Ireland and the US. Many of our graduates have gone on to prominent careers in the legal profession in Northern Ireland and elsewhere. Information on pursuing professional study in law at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies at Queens is also provided on the school website.

We are pleased to announce that Matthew McCallion passed his PhD viva with corrections on Wednesday 30 September 2026. Many congratulations Matthew!

Matthew’s thesis was entitled “Criminal Law and the Autistic Defendant: Solving the Tension Between the Objective Nature of Criminal Liability and Emerging Theories on Neurodiversity”.

Thank you to Prof Jonathan Doak (Nottingham Trent University) acting as External Examiner, Dr John Taggart acting as Internal Examiner and Dr Lauren Dempster acting as Chair.

Matthew’s supervisors were Dr Clayton Ó Néill and Prof Kevin Brown.

We are delighted to announce that the Dr Thomas J Moran Scholarships are now open for applications. Students can apply for awards of £1,250 to support international travel for skills development

The Dr Thomas J Moran Travel Scholarships were set up in 2018 by the Irish American Partnership to honour Dr Thomas J Moran.  These awards are intended to assist with travel abroad i.e. outside of the UK and Republic of Ireland relating to study or work experience.

This award is only available to undergraduate students (Stage 1 or Stage 2) studying within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences who have a declared household income below the minimum published threshold to determine eligibility for a full maintenance grant, as assessed by Student Finance NI.

Deadline for application submissions is Friday 9 April, 12 Noon.

Students must complete the online MS Form to apply and must upload all relevant documentation at time of submission.

Launching our Careers & Employability Lecture Series

Yesterday, we welcomed first-year and Senior Status students to the launch of our School’s Careers & Employability Module lecture series. Patricia Durkin (QUB Careers, Employability & Skills) opened the session with an overview of the tools, resources and support available to Queen’s students.
Students then heard from Katharina Banehr (Baker McKenzie) and Mary Kim Doherty and Megan Bell (Carson McDowell), who shared insights into their firms, career pathways and opportunities for developing legal skills and experience.

A sincere thank you to all our speakers for sharing their expertise and practical advice, helping our students develop the skills and awareness to support their studies and future careers.

Bringing Commercial Law to life with Mills Selig

Our Commercial Law students had the opportunity to hear directly from colleagues at Mills Selig, who joined us at the School of Law for an engaging guest lecture on commercial awareness, training contract applications and life as a trainee.

Sharing practical insights into starting a career in commercial law, the Mills Selig team encouraged students to stay curious, ask questions and embrace collaborative working – advice that extends well beyond securing that first opportunity and into developing as a legal professional.

The session was facilitated by Professor Joan Loughrey and Dr Zi Yang, pictured with John Quinn, Head of Business Development, Tim Richards, Human Resources Team, and colleagues from across Mills Selig, including members of the firm's trainee cohort.
As a leading independent commercial law firm based in Belfast, Mills Selig provided students with an opportunity to connect their academic study of Commercial Law with the realities of professional practice and hear first-hand about the skills and qualities valued by employers.
