'Financially I had to be independent, so stopping work to study was not an option.'

For Lyndsey, becoming a nurse couldn't come at the expense of supporting her family.

One of the biggest barriers to postgraduate study can be the cost.

Eligible new postgraduate students in Northern Ireland may be able to access a tuition fee loan of up to £10,000 through Student Finance Northern Ireland.

There’s no upper age limit.
It’s not means-tested.
You can apply whether you’re employed or not.
And repayments only begin once your earnings reach the repayment threshold.

"Support helped me find my way back."

While training to become a Registered Mental Health Nurse, Cheryl faced addiction and stepped away from her studies to focus on recovery.

When she was ready to return, The Open University was ready to support her. Tutors and staff checked in, listened and helped her rebuild the confidence to keep moving towards the career she knew she wanted.

Because sometimes support isn't about deadlines or modules. It's about having people who understand what you're going through. Today, Cheryl is heading into her fourth year of sobriety and working in her dream role with Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.

Her story is a reminder that the right support can change everything.

A-Level results day can feel like a moment when you are expected to have everything figured out.

But your future does not have to follow one set path.

For Odhrán from Pomeroy, going to university was never about leaving everything behind. He wanted to keep working, stay close to his family and friends and continue playing an active role in his local community.

“I wasn’t sure if brick university life would have been for me,” he said. “I wanted to stay close to my friends and family and continue being part of my community.”

So, after completing his A-Levels, Odhrán chose a different route.

He studied Business Management with The Open University while working full-time and supporting Pomeroy Plunkett’s GAC as a member of the club’s executive committee.

It meant early mornings, late nights and plenty of careful planning. But it also meant he could keep the parts of his life that mattered most.

“Being able to stay at home meant I could continue to be involved in my GAA club and my local community. I don’t think I would have been as involved if I had gone away to a traditional university.”

Along the way, Odhrán gained more than a qualification. He built experience, developed new skills and created a future without having to step away from his home, work or community.

Now, he can look back proudly on the path he chose.

“It’s great to finally say that I have a degree.”

Your results matter, but they are only one part of your story.
